PUBLIC HEALTH WORKS DIVISION NO.1, G.W.S. & S. BOARD, JUNAGADH JUNAGADH URBAN WATER SUPPLY SCHEME BASED ON HASNAPUR DAM NEW PIPELINE WORKS INCLUDING NEW FILTER PLANT TALUKA – DISTRICT – JUNAGADH 1. INTRODUCTION: Junagadh city is situated in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat State of Western India. It lies at latitude 20.44 N and longitude 71.05 E. It is a famous historical city and well-known religious pilgrim centre. This city is a district head quarter of Junagadh district of Gujarat state and has very great historical values, right from the days of Mahabharata. It has relics of ancient Hindu structures including Ashoka’s pillar, Buddhist ancient caves, Dattar pir Dargah, the famous Girnar Jain temples on the Girnar hills, Damador kund, Swaminarayan Mandir etc. On 26th January, 2003 this city got a status of Municipal Corporation and its area is increasing from 13.47 sq. km. to 52.1 sq. km. In last 10 years, the growth of O.G. areas around city is tremendous. At the end of decade, the population of Junagadh city including O. G. area, Joshipara area and surrounding rural areas reaches over 3.0 lacs souls. 2. CONFIGURATION : The Junagadh city is based on a hard rock formation of Girnar hills. The thickly populated portion of the city is situated in the crescent shaped valleys on the South- West footings of the famous Girnar hills. The city is developed in a very compact manner, in long paralleled stripes on the foot of Girnar hills from level of about 150 Mtrs. to the lowest R.L. of about 30 Mtrs. above the mean sea level. However the climate of Junagadh city is hot due to surrounding hills in summer season and cold in winter. The average maximum & minimum temperatures recorded in summer and winter are 42°c and 10°c respectively on an average. 4. RAINFALL: Average annual rainfall of the city is about 880 mm. 5. EXISTING WATER SUPPLY ARRANGMENTS: The water supply facility at Uparkot was established in about 1906 A.D. at present which is in use. At present the available sources for the city, are as under : 1. Anandpur Weir on Ozat river. 2. Wellingdon Dam 3. Hasnapur Dam on Lol river. 4. 165 mm dia Bores -110 Nos. 5. 115 mm dia Bores (Hand pumps – Deep wells ) - 450 Nos. 6. Wells - 20 Nos. The existing sources and their capacities are as under; Sr Source Live Available No Capacity drawl (mld) in (Million liter) Avg. year. 1 Hasnapur Dam 8200.00 14.00 2 Willingdon 720.00 1.25 3 Anandpur Weir 2200.00 5.75 4 Open wells & Bores - 5.00 Total 26.00 In the year 2000-2001 the network of Saurashtra pipeline Project was extended upto Junagadh District. For that,1016 mm E:\PB-1\V.V.K\hasnapur new scheme\New Scheme\General Report.doc 2 dia M.S. Pipeline of about 26.0 kms. length, was laid from Bhesan sub off-take point to Ozat-II Dam. The connectivity of this main Mahi – Narmada trunk pipeline was made available for Junagadh city by laying 610 mm dia M.S. Pipeline of about 6.50 kms. length from Bela B/F. point. (@ down stream of Ozat-II dam) to Anandpur weir, where existing water supply system is on run. It is about 16km away from the city. In almost each summer, when JMC faces drinking water crisis, available Mahi- Narmada water is supplied by GWSSB on Anandpur weir. In 2004, GWSSB has executed an augmentation Water Supply Scheme based on Anandpur weir. A new Intake well was constructed at Anandpur weir. Water from this intake is pumped by turbine pumps and 610mm dia. MS rising main pipeline was laid upto Upparkot slow sand filtration plant. The capacity of Anandpur weir is 2200 millon liter and available drawl is 5.75 mld. Existing water treatment plan (Slow Sand Filter) at Upparkot was constructed long back e.i. 1906 A.D. and its life span is over. The filtration capacity is reduced considerably. Lack of proper O & M of the plant by local body also has played a major role in reduction of its capacity. On up-gradation of the status of local body from Municipality to Municipal Corporation and due to extension of areas for Municipal limits, villages like Timbavadi, Khamdhrol, Zanzarda, Chobari, Dolatpara, Saragvada, Sabalpur, Bhavnath and one previous municipal borough - Joshipura and OG areas had merged in to the Corporation. It is therefore the responsibility of JMC to provide safe and sufficient drinking water to the present and future population by expanding and developing the present infrastructure facilities. The existing infrastructure facilities for water supply of villages which were merged with JMC are as under: E:\PB-1\V.V.K\hasnapur new scheme\New Scheme\General Report.doc 3 Sr Area Source Distribution through No 1 Timbavadi Village TW - 3 Through Overhead tanks and House Well - 2 Connections HP – 30 2 Joshipura NP TW - 3 ESR & house connections HP – 46 3 Khamdhrol Village TW - 3 ESR & house connections Well - 2 HP – 30 4 Zanzarda Village TW - 2 ESR & house connections OW – 1 5 Chobari Village Well - 1 PVC Over head tank & 14 House HP – 7 connection & stand post 6 Saragvada Village Well - 1 Through house connections & 1 Stand HP – 10 post 7 Sabalpur Village Well - 2 Through piping,159 House HP – 10 connections & 5 Stand post 8 Dolatpara Village Well – 1 House Connections & Stand posts 9 Bhavnath Well - 1 Stand posts TB & HP 6. POPULATION FORECAST AND WATER DEMAND: Junagadh city is an ancient city having large historical & religious values. Every year, lacs of pilgrims and tourists visit Junagadh city. This city has total population of 2,57,305 souls as per 2001 census including O.G. areas, Joshipara borough and newly merged other 8 villages. City had got Municipal Corporation status in year 2002. Present population of city is about 3.77 lacs including 15% more are considered for pilgrims, tourists throughout a year. Census Population Pop. Of O.G. areas incl. Pop. Of Pop. NECESSITY OF THE PROJECT: The existing W.S. Scheme of city is based on Hasnapur dam which was established almost 45 years ago. The components of the scheme are very old and required large up-gradations. The other sources of the city are Willigdon dam, Anandpur dam, existing wells, 165 mm dia. Bores, deep wells and hand pumps around the city. At present, people get about 15 to 17 MLD of water from above mentioned sources. Under the grant of URBAN Year-2005, under Phase-I programme, all newly merged villages / areas are made connected with Anandpur weir by JMC. At present, a new Phase-II scheme for these areas is undergoing, in which works of new storages (sumps and E.S.Rs) and internal distribution pipelines for each of these areas are in progress. But due to less rainfall in last monsoon, Anandpur dam has became almost dry now. At present, about 6.00 MLD of Mahi-Narmada Water is being supplied to this dam. Since last almost one and half decades, as mentioned above, almost all new water supply works were carried out by local body considering Anandpur weir as the main source of the city. Due to huge increase in requirement of drinking water for newly born E:\PB-1\V.V.K\hasnapur new scheme\New Scheme\General Report.doc 5 corporation, it is upmost necessary to fully utilize available water from Hasnapur dam. As on today, newly merged areas of the city are remain to cover under Hasnapur dam, which is the only reliable and fully useable source of the city. This dam is become overflowed 3 times in last 5 years. At present, JMC can draw only 6 MLD of water from this dam as existing 27 inches size RCC pipeline of about 12 kms. length from dam to Dharagadh filter plant became very old and having much more daily leakage problems. Recently, JMC has submitted preliminary Project Report to Urban Cell, costing of Rs.6000.00 lacs. covering mainly new metallic pipeline from Hasnapur dam to Upparkot new 20MLD cap. Filter Plant, 50.00 lacs ltr.cap. clear water sump and connecting network for newly merged areas of the city. For that, Hon. Chief Engr. Shri N.M. Patel of GWSSB has visited Hasnapur dam site on dated 12/8/2012.As per the instructions, scheme was prepared and submitted. This scheme has got an administrative approval from G.U.D.N. vide his order dtd. 1-4-2013 amounting Rs. 2355.27 Lacs. Net and Rs. 2403 Lacs Gross. Hon. Chief Engr. Shri N.M.
