Please always check the weather forecast and choose alternative routes in case of unfavourable weather conditions. Charged mobile phone In an emergency, a charged mobile phone can save lives. Vorarlberg Mountain Rescue: 144 Tyrol Mountain Rescue: 140 Emergency App: SOS EU ALP Residual snow fields The Arlberg is known for its abundance of snow. Especially on north-facing slopes, in gullies and hollows, old snow deposits can be expected until well into summer. Hiking poles help you to keep your balance. Open trails Please inform yourself about which hiking trails are open before setting out on your hike. Trail closures are there for a reason and must be observed. Cable car opening hours Please note the operating hours of the respective cable cars. Especially on the stage between Lech and St. Anton, the cable cars provide important assistance. We always recommend taking the first cable car ride. Sturdy footwear Ankle high, sturdy hiking boots, or very solid mountain boots are recommended in the high mountains, which provide the best grip in stony terrain. Luggage transport Make it easier on yourself. Take advantage of the luggage transport service and carry only the essentials, including rain gear, for the hike. Food and drink Make sure you have enough food and drink with you for the journey. Respect for nature As a rule: treat nature with respect. Wildlife and grazing animals should not be disturbed. Flowers are most beautiful when they are allowed to grow in nature and not picked.

After crossing the Stillachbrücke bridge, the trail leads to the West of the river past the famous Heini Klopfer ski jump in Oberstdorf to Faistenoy. This is where the valley station of the Fellhornbahn railway is situated. By the banks of the Stillach river, continue until reaching the little village of Birgsau. It is served regularly by an RVA bus connection (3h 20min). The narrow bridge in Birgsau is the starting point for the steep climb to the Guggersee lake. Begin by climbing up across the meadows and later through the wood. Already at an altitude of 1,400m, leave the wood behind you and follow the track after a short, somewhat flatter stretch further uphill over alpine meadows until coming to the little, crystal-clear mountain lake (approx. 2h 30min from Birgsau). The route becomes less steep and continues to the overgrown Taufersbergalpe meadowland and from there – keeping to the right – through the wide Roßgund cirque. Below the jagged ridge of the Schafalpenköpfe summits, you will reach the Mindelheimer Hut without any great changes in altitude (approx. 2h 30min).

© Lonely Planet Publications 329 Tyrol If you could bottle everything that sums up Austria surely Tyrol would be it: from the woodsy log chalets and wholesome food to the thigh-slapping tradition and alpine peaks rising like shark fins in a frothy white ocean. Few places can match it on a winter’s day, with a big sky above, dazzling snow crunching underfoot and bracing mountain air filling your lungs. No wonder the locals are notoriously proud and independent. Who wouldn’t be with all that? There are plenty of reasons to fall for Tyrol: the people are down-to-earth, sincere and marvellously eccentric; the cities such as Innsbruck and Kufstein are gems (overshadowed by frosty mountains and complete with precipitous castles and medieval backstreets); the schnapps is potent; the powder deep; and the culture a happy marriage of old and new – shifting from rural farms and cobbled alleyways to Zen-like spas and crystalline edifices. But it’s the Alps that steal the show in a ‘wow I’m in Austria’ kind of way and nowhere else are they more prominent or accessible. Tyrol is a beauty with bumps and curves in all the right places, with resorts like Kitzbühel where you can find your ski legs, Mayrhofen where they’ll turn to jelly on black runs, and St Anton where you can get legless in après-ski bars before wobbling down the valley. When sunshine spills across the green vales in summer, walks stretch from gentle strolls to week-long tramps over windswept passes where, with any luck, you might spot an eagle: Tyrol’s most famous yet elusive high-flyer.
