It stands on a good position, high above the South Calder Water. It was built as one of many defensive measures across the Forth and Clyde Valley. The typical design of these houses was a tall, square block of three storeys, with thick walls and battlements - all set within a courtyard. For security, no access was available between the ground floor and the two floors above. The roofs were made of stone for protection against fire attacks and parapets and fighting platforms were provided around the wall tops. Renovations were made around 1790 with the addition of an extra storey to the main building and a gothic style parapet running around the roofline. The original courtyard was replaced by a late Georgian building. Internally, the old dungeons and the turret staircase were filled in. In around 1850 the castle was sold to Robert Stewart, an ex-provost of Glasgow. Robert Stewart added a two-storey wing which connected the original tower to the Georgian extension. Today, Murdostoun Castle is a Category B Listed building. ABBEYCARE SCOTLAND Murdostoun Castle • Newmains • Wishaw • Scotland • ML2 9BY T: 01698 386013 • E: [email protected] www.abbeycare.co.uk.
