Reading on copyright and fair use laws is not an idea most people have fun with. This comic from Duke University, however, translates the basics of law into an interesting, visual story. The heroine, documentary filmmaker, must navigate the wacky world of intellectual property law, learns the fine line between fair use and copyright infringement. The comic books cover the basics not only of art and photography, but also of digital remixes, videos of people and and other tricky themes. At least it's more appealing than visiting the government's copyright website. You can download digital versions of the comic book for free, read it in your web browser, or buy the printed version for $6.Tales from the public domain: Related by law? Duke University Center for the Study of the Public Domain through Photofocus While most may rattle off the names of at least a dozen major comic book characters (probably including their own favorite superheroes), many are unaware of all the stars who have made appearances in some memorable comic book story lines. Here are 9 celebrities who made comic-book cameos. 1. Anderson Cooper Source: Marvel Famous CNN host has appeared (as himself) in the release of the black widow series. According to series writer Nathan Edmondson told Marvel, Cooper is reportedly questioning investigative news reports on his show about the character and her actions. The report will act as a catalyst for a major event in the Journey of the Black Widow. As Edmondson explained: It's Anderson doing what he does best: looking for truth and reporting on events. We imagine that in the world of the Black Widow, as in many other Avengers, what she does cannot be ignored by the media. 2. Barack Obama Source: Marvel When Barack Obama beat John McCain in the 2008 presidential election, Marvel decided to bank off the news by releasing this politically driven storyline, just in time for the 2009 inauguration. In history, the president is now ina inauguration when the second Obama suddenly appears. When Secret Service agents react with nothing but confusion, Peter Parker - who was there, taking pictures for The Daily Bugle - begins questioning both men. When the impostor Obama does not remember his middle name, he turns into the villain Of Chameleon, leading to a short fight before eventually being captured and handed over to the police. Obama expresses his gratitude to Spider-Man, admitting to him that he has always been a big fan. 3. KISS Source: Marvel In that probably one of the strangest celebrities involved in comic book plot lines ever, the rock band made an appearance about in the release of Howard's 12 Duck 27-issue run. In this matter, Howard goes on a trip to Cleveland in an attempt to get rid of the nightmares that haunt him. On the way there, he meets Winda, a girl who shows that she is on her way to get the exorcism imposed on her by her parents. The two become friends but end up getting into an altercation on a bus that lands both of them in jail. The prison doctor then performs an exorcism on Winda himself. By everyone's shock, the thoughts that form during the procedure take the form of KISS members. Cameo spawned an entire SERIES of KISS. But this isn't the only time the band has appeared in a comic book. Members also popped up in the four-part Archie series in 2011. 4. Muhammad Ali Source: DC Comics In one of Superman's adventures, a man known as the greatest boxer in the history of problem man of steel in a regular boxing match. The epic battle evokes quite a turnout, as with real celebrities and other fictional figures appearing in the audience. Only after Ali knocks out Superman and wins the match, does the rest of the world know that it was all part of a trick to save the planet from an alien invasion. When the scheme is over, the two men share their feelings of respect, with Ali proclaiming them both the greatest world champions. 5. Eminem Source: The Marvel rapper has made a point of being honest and laying it all on the line when it comes to his career and life story. But many fans may still not be aware of this appearance in The Punisher, in which Frank Castle is hired to protect the artist from Barracuda. After Castle kills most of Eminem's team in a misunderstanding, the artist becomes convinced that Barracuda is his true ally and does not make it easy for Castle to do his job, giving him an attitude around the subject and eventually knocking him out. The scuffle leads Barracud to capture them both. The release ends with Eminem apologizing to Castle, and they end up winning over the real villain. 6. Charles Barkley Source: Dark Horse Comics is now a retired professional basketball player made a one-time appearance in Dark Horse Comic, opposite Gozilla. In this matter, Barkley looks - for inexplicable reasons - the same size as a giant beast, and the two end up attending a basketball game against each other in New Jersey. History shows Barkley pulling out every trick in the book to beat Godzilla in the game. The two end on good terms, with the sports star giving his opponent some tips on how to improve his game and give him a pair of (very big) Nike sneakers. 7. Tim Gunn Source: Marvel Most know fashion expert for his contributions to Project Runaway and his famous phrase: Make it work! But it turns out that he also helped save the day in the release of the Iron Man crossover. In an installment, called Models Inc., the fashion designer found murdered at New York Fashion Week. Millie Model was soon pinned as the prime suspect, and several other Marvel characters like Mary Jane Watson and Hellcat, the team to prove their innocence. But when the killer begins to send killers to kill those who are investigating, Gunn must punish the famous Armor Ironman for protection. 8. Stephen Smith ARH 580 Betty vs. Veronica American Archie-types 1 Archie’s World Archie Comics Publications, Inc. introduced its first openly gay character in September 2010. The cover of Ve- ronica #202 (fig. 1) exclaims, “meet the hot new guy.” The homosexual Kevin Keller enters a world that is nothing if not wholesome, middle American, and uncontroversial. The mainstream press responded to Kevin as little more than another human interest or business sto- ry.1 The gay press applauded the move2 but, in general, the lack of outrage and criticism by the usual suspects3 is a clear sign of the social progress of American culture. The character of Archie An- 1. drews is designed to be the most “average” of all possible American teenagers. He lives in the average town of Riverdale and attends the unremarkable Riverdale High. He is not particularly wealthy or poor, intelligent of dumb, athletic or nerdy, large or small. He is the absolute center of the bell curve of the American teenage boy. The main female characters, Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, along with Archie, form a love triangle that has gone unresolved for almost seventy years. These characters have represented the “norm” as the “norm,” itself, has dramatically changed. What effect do Archie, Veronica, and Betty have on the establishment of gender identities among their readers? How have Archie comics evolved as American society, as a whole, has become more inclusive? It is fair to say that the 1. • The Rationale Behind High School Teachers' Discipline
CHIDOMERE, ADAMMA K., M.A. Decisions, Decisions: The Rationale Behind High School Teachers’ Discipline Decision-Making Process (2019) Directed by Dr. Shelly Brown-Jeffy. 128 pp. This research examines the influential circumstances involved in the discipline decision-making process of school teachers at one predominantly Black high school and one predominantly White high school. I gathered data on teachers’ understanding and use of school discipline in addition to teachers’ perceptions of student misconduct and discipline in their school. The data reveals that teachers exercise discretion when they decide on an appropriate disciplinary response. Teachers’ race and gender may influence their discipline decision-making process. Black and White students tend to receive similar disciplinary consequences, but there are instances in which Black students face more punitive punishment than White students. FROM LIARS TO SLAYERS: SEEKING A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE TEEN DRAMA by Corine Elizabeth Mathis A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctorate of Philosophy in English Middle Tennessee State University August 2017 Doctoral Committee: Dr. Alicia Mischa Renfroe, Chair Dr. Allen Hibbard Dr. Jane Marcellus I dedicate this research to my mentor, Dr. David Lavery, who always believed in my ideas and ability to see them to fruition, and to my uncle, Dr. Donald Andrews, without whom I would never have done any of this in the first place. I miss you both greatly. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my family for their love and support throughout this seemingly unending process—from Tennessee to Alabama, full-time work to fellowship, you have been very understanding of the idiosyncrasies necessary to bring this project to completion. And to the friends who have become family, thank you for all the times you have been my sounding boards and helped me work out my ideas; I appreciate our conversations more than you know. I would also like to thank Dr. Mischa Renfroe, Dr. Allen Hibbard, and Dr. Jane Marcellus for being so patient with me during a very difficult year and working hard to give helpful feedback to a long-distance student. iii ABSTRACT In television genre studies, scholars tend to neglect the teen drama or situate all series that concern teens under the same umbrella, often dismissing the genre for connections to the soap or for its appeal to a teenage, often primarily female, audience.

  • A Growth Drive – by Archie-Fan
A Growth Drive – by Archie-Fan Cheryl left the mall after signing up for the Miss Mighty Riverdale junior bodybuilding contest, but she didn’t go home. Instead Cheryl went to the home of Dilton Doiley, the local genius. Cheryl had briefly dated Dilton in an attempt to raise her grades and it had worked. But they had broken up after Betty and Veronica had exposed Cheryl’s intentions. However Cheryl had actually genuinely liked Dilton and was sure he felt the same towards her and she hoped to use those feelings to get his help. As she walked up the door to the house Cheryl considered her biggest competition which was definitely Betty and Veronica. Betty had a work ethic unlike any other girl which was going to be difficult to overcome while Veronica had resources that rivalled Cheryl’s. Cheryl knew that if there was one person that could give her an advantage over both of them it was Dilton, however he was friends with both Betty and Veronica, so Cheryl had to get to him first. Cheryl reached the door and knocked a shortly thereafter Dilton answered. “Cheryl, what are you doing here?” he asked in surprise. “Well Dilton I’m sure you heard about the Miss Mighty Riverdale contest,” Cheryl said. “Yes what of it?” Dilton asked suspiciously. “Well I was hoping that you could help me win,” Cheryl replied. “I could make it very worth your while.” “What’s your angle here?” Dilton inquired intrigued but still a little wary. “I want to beat Betty and Veronica,” Cheryl replied.
