Orally administered probiotics can contribute to the restoration of dysbiotic microbiota and to the prevention of obesity or IBD. However, as the effects of different probiotics on the F/B ratio differ, selecting the appropriate species or mixture is crucial. The most commonly tested probiotics for modifying the F/B ratio and treating obesity and IBD are from the genus Lactobacillus. In this paper, we review the effects of probiotics on the F/B ratio that lead to weight loss or immunosuppression.

J. Feuilloley1* Lactobacilli and estrogens play essential roles in vaginal homeostasis. We investigated the potential direct efect of 17β‑estradiol on a vaginal strain of Lactobacillus crispatus, the major bacterial species of the vaginal microbiota. 17β‑estradiol (10–6 to 10–10 M) had no efect on L. crispatus growth, but markedly afected the membrane dynamics of this bacterium. This efect appeared consistent with a signal transduction process. The surface polarity and aggregation potential of the bacterium were unafected by exposure to 17β‑estradiol, but its mean size was signifcantly reduced. 17β‑estradiol also promoted biosurfactant production by L. crispatus and adhesion to vaginal VK2/E6E7 cells, but had little efect on bacterial bioflm formation activity. Bioinformatic analysis of L. crispatus identifed a membrane lipid raft–associated stomatin/prohibitin/fotillin/HfK domain containing protein as a potential 17β‑estradiol binding site. Overall, our results reveal direct efects of 17β‑estradiol on L. crispatus. These efects are of potential importance in the physiology of the vaginal environment, through the promotion of lactobacillus adhesion to the mucosa and protection against pathogens. MS has been proven to be associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus, leading to morbidity and mortality. In this manuscript, we review recent studies concerning the role of the gut microbiota in MS modulation. Manipulation of the gut microbiota through the administration of prebiotics or probiotics may assist in weight loss and reduce plasma glucose and serum lipid levels, decreasing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. To the best of our knowledge, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), bile salt hydrolase (BSH), metabolic endotoxemia and the endocannabinoid (eCB) system are essential in regulating the initiation and pro- gression of MS through the normalization of adipogenesis and the regulation of insulin secretion, fat accumulation, energy homeostasis, and plasma cholesterol levels. Therefore, the gut microbiota may serve as a potential therapeutic target for MS. However, further studies are needed to enhance our understanding of manipulating the gut microbiota and the role of the gut microbiota in MS prevention and treatment. Accepted June 15, 2006) SUMMARY: Lactobacilli have long been considered to be protective flora in the vagina. In this study, samples were taken from the lateral vaginal wall of 19 healthy women, and 58 strains of Lactobacillus spp. were isolated from 10 of these women. The identification results revealed that Lactobacillus gasseri was the predominant lactobacilli in healthy women. The amounts of lactic acid and hy drogen peroxide (H2O2) produced by Lactobacillus spp. were determined. The vaginal pH levels induced by Lactobacillus spp. strains ranged from 1.00 to 2.15. The titratable acidity of the strains ranged from 0.27 to 1.33%. The H2O2 concentration produced in the lactobacilli strains ranged between 1.01 μg/ml and 15.50 μg/ml. The antimicrobial effects of the lactobacilli against the pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli ATCC 11230, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 2392, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 29212 and Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis RSKK 171 were also determined by the agar diffusion methods. Abstract: Lactobacillus gasseri is one of the most likely probiotic candidates among many Lactobacillus species. Although bile salt resistance has been defined as an important criterion for selection of probiotic candidates since it allows probiotic bacteria to survive in the gut, both its capability and its related enzyme, bile salt hydrolase (BSH), in L. gasseri is still largely unknown. Here, we report that the well-known probiotic bacterium L. gasseri JCM1131T possesses BSH activity and bile salt resistance capability. Indeed, this strain apparently showed BSH activity on the plate assay and highly tolerated the primary bile salts and even taurine-conjugated secondary bile salt. We further isolated a putative BSH enzyme (LagBSH) from strain JCM1131T and characterized the enzymatic function. The purified LagBSH protein exhibited quite high deconjugation activity for taurocholic acid and taurochenodeoxycholic acid. The lagBSH gene was constitutively expressed in strain JCM1131T, suggesting that LagBSH likely contributes to bile salt resistance of the strain and may be associated with survival capability of strain JCM1131T within the human intestine by bile detoxification.
