What a month it’s been! With our new website finally (!) rolling out many of you have been very busy telling us what you think. Some of it is, as expected, glitch bound and I can only thank you all for your loyalty and perseverance.

The good news is that we are getting there and of course, it is a huge undertaking and a huge set of changes for everyone. We are printing a useful guide for the most frequently asked questions and we have made it into a four page pullout. We hope this will assist you in getting used to our most comprehensive site yet.

Elsewhere, I am personally thrilled to offer you an in-depth profile of one our most loved personalities. Liz Clarke is for me, and many others, the embodiment of what Line dance should be about. Fun, fun and more fun. If you want to know more about this wonderful lady you will love our lead story.

Every so often an album jumps out at me and takes me by surprise, so much so that I want to write about it without the help of press agents or releases. Emilia Mitiku’s, I Belong To You, is such a record. Sandra Speck used Zou Bisou to great effect as we know and I wanted to find out more from this great artist.

The LDF day this year was a national success and we proudly take you round the day’s events. I am absolutely thrilled when I look back and think of my first chat with Claire Rutter and Kim Ray. In a very short three years, this event has galvanised many more people and 2016 promises to be even bigger. If you can attend one of those great days out nationwide, book your place now. It is a fabulous day and one that makes such a difference for Line dancers.

France as we well know is the place where Line dance has a thriving community and Line dance Attitude 24 is a fabulous association, born out of passion for the joy of dance. Read more in this issue.

We take you much further, all the way to Nashville and your hosts Barry Amato who introduce us to Spirit of Nashville, a business like no other.

I also want to touch briefly on Ryan King’s ‘Help. Don’t Hurt’. Very often, when the media covers bullying it is about the bullies and those bullied and never much about the rest of us who are appalled at the idea but do not feel very involved. Ryan, very bravely, accepted my invitation to write about some of the things he has had to deal with (and still does). His writing is exceptional and his story can hopefully help make a difference.

I really hope you enjoy the magazine and I’ll see you next month

Neil Higgs and his Line dance club recently held their Annual Line Dancer Charity Fundraiser and raised £1900 for the Wallace & Grommit Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, which provides life-saving equipment, facilities and comforts for patients and their families. Neil says, “Somerset’s most popular Line dancing instructors Sally and Fran held their long running annual afternoon charity fundraiser on Saturday 28th March 2015. The heavily subscribed event raised approximately £1900 through the admission fee, sale of tea and cakes, raffl e and charity auction. Sally and Fran would like to thank all who attended and to everyone who gave a small donation, for their support and local people and businesses who donated goods for the raffl e and charity auction.”

If anyone, who has no idea about Line dance, should meet Liz Clarke, they would think that if all dancers were like her, this would be a hobby to cherish. And though the world is (sadly) not full of Lizzie’s, we are very lucky that she chose to devote many years to dance and our industry. In this very candid interview, Liz opens her big heart to Laurent.

Laurent Saletto: Hi Liz, now I know a house full of boys. I loved my Highland the atmosphere of everyone learning that speaking about yourself is not your and spent years and years doing that. together and helping one another favourite pastime so before we start, Ballet was too girlie for me, so soon with the ‘tricky’ bits of the dances. Emilia Mitiku.indd 2 22/04/2015 11:23 Laurent Saletto: Hi Emilia... Tell our readers a little more about you first.

Emilia Mitiku: Hello Laurent. Well my name is Emilia Mitiku and I was born in Stockholm. Today, I’m back where it all started for me after living in Berlin, Budapest and London for a while. I love city life and Stockholm is a small city but big town if you understand what I mean. It just offers a little bit of everything and on top of that it is so beautiful. I grew up mainly with my mum because my dad was always on the road playing his music. When I was younger, I was determined to find a good job with normal hours but one thing led to another and… well, I loved singing to much. So here I am.

Album review.indd 1 22/04/2015 11:28 NATIONAL DAY 2015 SATURDAY 21 MARCH One Amazing Day

Since its launch in 2007, the Line Dance Foundation is growing every year, becoming slowly but surely a charitable resource for Line dancers when they need help at a difficult time in their lives.

Let’s remind ourselves that the LDF’s aim was always to support those people involved in the Line dance business who find themselves in difficult circumstances through illness, accident or other distressing circumstances which affect their ability to work and earn a living. The LDF is there to help anyone who is involved in Line dance on a professional basis, be that part- time or full time, anywhere in the world and in any capacity (ie: choreographer, instructor, performer, DJ or event organiser).

The foundation, it is true, took a while to ignite imaginations but now thanks to its annual national dance and amazing day events, like the ones you are about to discover in the next few pages, the LDF is a resource that the dance community can justly be proud of.

The days highlighted here are in no way a full representative of every social held for the LDF throughout the year. If you, or someone you know, has held an event or evening for the LDF please let www.linedancefoundation.com us know...

ldf day 2016.indd 1 22/04/2015 11:31 85% Proof Will Young

85% Proof is the sixth album from the multi-million selling Brit Award winning singer- Will Young. The album is an eclectic, hugely confi dent and startlingly human record lead by the joyous, clap-heavy old school R&B strut of lead single ‘Love Revolution’. Produced by previous collaborator Jim Eliot (Mikky Ekko, Ellie Goulding), 85% Proof is a creative refl ection of Will’s extracurricular activities post-Echoes (which included starring as The Emcee in Cabaret and writing for blogs like the Huffi ngton Post). 85% Proof is his most personal and honest songwriting to date.

We Are Lucy Spraggan

Following on her from her 2013 Top 10 album Join The Club, Lucy Spraggan releases her third album We Are. Unsinkable, the fi rst single from her new album, is an emotive song with a heartfelt melody and dramatic electro synths that lead into a vast and captivating choir- backed chorus. The track, whilst retaining Lucy’s trademark style, is a mature offering, which showcases Lucy’s adept songwriting and strong vocal. The new album was recorded in London and features 12 tracks that are a collection of sincere ballads and inspiring folk-tinged pop songs told in Lucy’s direct storytelling style about everyday life. Lucy says; I’m very much looking forward to releasing ‘’We Are’’ under my own steam. The album is basically a diary of the ups and downs of the last few years; appearing on The X Factor, moving to London, working hard and changing as a person. In some ways writing this record has been a bit of documentation for me and some of the songs are pretty revealing but I’m looking forward to sharing them.

John & Jacob John & Jacob Up and coming Nashville band John and Jacob’s songs will be familiar to anyone who has watched the hit TV show Nashville - or who has seen Kacey Musgraves on tour. Their debut album is a heady cocktail of Nashville pop, great songwriting and winning personality. In Febuary they sold out their fi rst headline show in London at The Barfl y, which was followed by shows in Manchester and Glasgow. March will bring John & Jacob’s second single to Radio 2 with an album release and UK tour. John & Jacob are published writers in Nashville writing such Billboard #1 hits as ‘Done’ with The Band Perry. They have also had their current single ‘Be My Girl’, placed in ABC’s hit TV show, ‘Nashville.’

Priscilla by Laura Sway

Karl-Harry says: “‘Priscilla’ is a fantastic Improver dance choreographed by Laura Sway to an upbeat country track by Miranda Lambert. This catchy dance will have your entire class toe tapping away. The dance has one simple restart and it won’t take long for dancers to pick it up. As a choreographer, especially an up and coming one, it is always very difficult to find music to choreograph to. Since Laura has choreographed this dance, a few more dances have been released to this great track which shows that the track is a great one but it does make you wonder which dance to teach and learn. I highly recommend Laura Sway’s dance. Better still, so does Line dance legend Rob Fowler!”

Rob Fowler, legend of dance floors everywhere and who needs ON introduction!: “This track is a very catchy toe strutter that I’m sure will catch on. So when I checked Laura’s dance over I was very happy to see everything in there, toe struts, rocking chairs, turns, claps, stomps. Max Perry would be very proud as it also has all the ingredients of a floor filler. I was trying to be a Simon Cowell as in to be cruel but kind. However the simple truth is that if I had written it I would have been very happy as it is. So yes, thumbs up from Fowler and I’m taking it to France with me. Big hands up to Laura Sway!”

Reasons to learn ‘Priscilla’ by Laura Sway

step up.indd 3 23/04/2015 17:13 It can be rare for a group so rooted in Country to find success in the UK but it comes as no surprise that this is not the case when it comes to Jess and the Bandits. The Bandits met Texan favourite Jessica Clemmons, the opening act, during a 2012 tour while playing with The Overtones and instantly bonded over their mutual love of . As they began to play together more and more, it became clear that they were a match made in Country heaven. So, Jess and the Bandits was born.

The boys explain, “Well, we all knew each other for a while as a backing band for different artists. For each of us, music has always been our first love. Fortunately we have been able to make a career out of it. Before meeting Jess we were touring with The Overtones.”

Influenced by their musician father, brothers Ricci and Louis Riccardi were playing Country and Blues music from a very early age. Whilst studying in the US they learned the Nashville Number System, a method of transcribing music, which they still heavily rely on now. They later joined forces with fellow bass player David Troke, a musician who shared the same influences and later I co-wrote and recorded my first So how do Jess and the Bandits all aspirations. The fi rst single from the album is also entitled Shy and was co- written by Rita Ora. As well as Rita Ora, the 11-track album features a contribution from Lily Allen, but much of the material has been written by Stacey herself. Having been approached to record the typical post X Factor album by the major labels, Stacey wanted rather to develop her skills as a writer and a singer further and create something more genuine - on her own terms - to truly refl ect her personality and her true musical talent and artistic style. After all Stacey s fans know just who she is, and so does she...

Stages Josh Groban The album, recorded in Los Angeles and London’s Abbey Road (with a 75-piece orchestra), is a collection of some of the greatest musical theatre songs of all time featuring songs from Les Misérables, Carousel, Phantom of the Opera and others. Another highlight is Pure Imagination, originally sung by Gene Wilder in the fi lm Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which though best known as a fi lm, is also a West End musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. “It’s a tiny bit of a cheat because it was from a fi lm originally but I really wanted to sing it” Groban says. “The fans wanted me to as well. It’s one of my most requested songs to record ever”. Groban also says of the album that recording with a great orchestra at Abbey Road and with both Humberto and Bernie as producers was an extraordinary opportunity that has allowed him to focus on the warmth, clarity and emotion of the voice: “quality is key”.

The Desired Effect Brandon Flowers Despite all its storied pitfalls, louche reputation and lascivious tourism campaigns, Brandon Flowers remains stubbornly proud of his hometown. Flowers’ solo return follows a time of continued huge success with his band The Killers, whose fourth consecutive number 1 album, ‘Battle Born’, was released in 2012. The 10 track CD contains an exclusive 16 page artwork and lyric booklet.

Spirit of Nashville.indd 2 22/04/2015 11:57 “Patience, grasshopper,” said Maia. “Good things come to those who wait.” “I always thought that was ‘Good things come to those who wave,’” said Simon. “No wonder I’ve been so confused all my life.” - Cassandra Clare, City of Glass

And patient you have been. When we turned off the old website and expected the new one to take you all by surprise, the surprise turned out to be more the length of the wait than the contents of the site itself.

Day after day, the Linedancer team was frantically hoping there would be positive news. Paul, our Web manager (now elevated to guru status) worked around the clock with the site developers to find solutions and it was painful to see the team go one step forward only to fall three back each time.

Thousands of scripts, each linked to so much information drowned us in bugs, old and new bugs, popping up bugs, coming back bugs, getting sorted and getting bigger bugs, appearing from nowhere and generally going there too (nowhere that is) bugs.

As one thing was definitely sorted (“Yes, this is definitely sorted! DEFINITELY”), another two got unsorted (“You know those two things that were definitely sorted, they definitely don’t work anymore”). Betty was pulling her hair out, I was wishing I was bald (so as not to pull anymore of mine out!) and the team rushed to answer calls from bereft dancers who wanted their Linedancer fix.

It was then I realised that I never understood how much the site meant to so many of you. Not really. I know that, obviously, the Linedancer website is a huge support for many dancers, instructors and choreographers but I was not quite prepared for the emotional output that its absence brought to us in emails and phone calls. “We miss it, I can’t have my coffee in the morning without it!, I have no idea what to teach....HHHEEELLLPPPP”. It proved nothing short of heartbreaking for us to have no answers, no knowledge of the exact moment when we would be switched on again, no reassuring words of wisdom...

But now that it is here, we can look back on this period of blackout almost with pride. Because one thing is for sure, dancers have a lot of time and affection for our brand. Having made the necessary (but painful) decision of providing the website free, it does seem that the future is going to be bright after all... That amount of love and dedication from you all means that what we do is worthwhile and that the services we provide are useful and appreciated. And your patience has been outstanding. Thank you. And I am now thinking that maybe good things could come faster with a wave, gonna try it next time!
