1 “The Gospel According to Sting” Proper 17C (September 1, 2019) Rev. Dr. David A. Kaden >>Put a hand on our shoulder and point us in the right direction. Put our hand on someone’s shoulder and let it matter. Amen<< On July 10th, NPR’s “All Songs Considered” released a special called the “Tiny Desk Concert,” which featured two musicians performing together: Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner - also known as “Sting,” once the lead singer of the band The Police - and reggae star Orville Richard Burrell - also known as “Shaggy.”1 Sting and Shaggy - an Englishman and a Jamaican. The two have collaborated on projects before - they put out an album together in 2018 and went on tour - and they’re buddies. Shaggy affectionately calls Sting, “Sting-y.” On the day they sat down together at NPR’s Tiny Desk, which looks like a set in a Barnes and Noble store, they played several songs, including Sting’s Englishman in New York. That song was first released in February of 1988, and it has a little something for everyone: a reggae beat for reggae fans; a saxophone for jazz fans; strings for classical music fans; Sting’s voice for Police fans; it’s light-hearted for pop fans; and it was performed most recently in an NPR studio for….NPR fans. The song’s lyrics tell a story about living in the U.S. but being from a different country - living as an Englishman in New York. Sitting in NPR’s Tiny Desk studio, Sting played the guitar, Shaggy clapped the beat, and Sting sang these words: I don’t take coffee, I take tea, my dear / I like my toast done on one side / And you can hear it in my accent when I talk / I’m an Englishman in New York / See me walking down Fifth Avenue / A walking cane here at my side / I take it everywhere I walk / I’m an Englishman in New York When Shaggy took over the lyrics he changed the words and sang, “I’m a Jamaican in New York,” delighting the small crowd of fans in the NPR studio that day. -

LA TÉCNICA PUBLICITARIA DEL PRODUCT PLACEMENT APLICADA AL GÉNERO CINEMÁTOGRÁFICO DE SUSPENSE. CASO DE ESTUDIO: DAVID FINCHER Grado en Publicidad y Relaciones Públicas Curso 2020 – 2021 María Blanco Torres TRABAJO FIN DE GRADO LA TÉCNICA PUBLICITARIA DEL PRODUCT PLACEMENT APLICADA AL GÉNERO CINEMÁTOGRÁFICO DE SUSPENSE. CASO DE ESTUDIO: DAVID FINCHER Alejandro Buitrago Alonso Segovia, febrero 2021 1 Resumen: En este trabajo de fin de grado se ha realizado un análisis exhaustivo del uso de la técnica del product placement dentro de la filmografía del cineasta David Fincher, concretamente centrándose en su obra asociada al género de suspense. Una vez fijado el objetivo, los motivos por los que se ha elegido este tema y este objeto de estudio son, por una parte, el interés personal acerca de la utilización de esta técnica en el mundo cinematográfico y por otra, la capacidad narrativa de dicho director. Además, Fincher logra emplazar la publicidad de una manera tan sutil que en ocasiones pasa desapercibida. Para esta investigación, primero se ha llevado a cabo una aproximación teórica donde se han recogido los conceptos principales. En este caso han sido el origen del product placement y su importancia, además de su uso y los tipos de emplazamientos que se pueden emplear, y por otro lado se ha analizado la figura de David Fincher, desde sus inicios en la industria cinematográfica hasta sus últimos trabajos, examinando también su cine y su técnica narrativa. Después se ha escogido la metodología de la investigación, que se basa en un análisis exhaustivo de las cinco películas de su filmografía pertenecientes a la categoría de suspense. -

Short Synopsis After a single-mother (Carice van Houten) witnesses terrifying symptoms of demonic possession in her 11-year-old son (David Mazouz), a Vatican representative (Catalina Sandino Moreno) calls on wheelchair-bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to rid him of the evil spirit. Driven by a personal agenda rooted in his own tragic past, Ember enters the boy’s unconscious mind where he confronts a demon as ferocious as it is ingenious. Long Synopsis Eleven-year-old Cameron (David Mazouz) alarms his single mother Lindsay (Carice van Houten) when he begins isolating himself on the floor of his dark room, speaking in ancient languages and displaying other symptoms of demonic possession. Alerted to the situation, Vatican representative Camilla (Catalina Sandino Moreno) recruits wheelchair- bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to extract the evil spirit from the boy. A non-believer who drinks, smokes and prefers to think of his work as “eviction” rather than exorcism, Ember sets up shop with high-tech assistants Riley (Emily Jackson) and Oliver (Keir O’Donnell). Strapped into a life-support system, he enters Cameron’s subconscious mind, where the demon holds the boy captive in an imaginary dream world by appealing to his deepest desire: to be reunited with his estranged father Dan (Matt Nable). Driven by tragic events in his own traumatic past, Ember engages in a fierce battle with the crafty spirit. Ever mindful that the demon, known as “Maggie,” travels from one victim to the next through physical contact, Ember knows that his desperate attempt to save Cameron’s soul could make him the demon’s next host. -

Comic Con Retains Crown
Comic Con Retains Crown Comic Con continued to show its chops as the biggest event in the littlest state this year. Overall, the event successfully trafficked what was probably around 100,000 people [final numbers were still pending at press time] through a colossal maze of vendors, celebrities, artists and activities without losing too many to the Upside-Down. There were tense moments – attendance spiked around the middle of the day on Saturday, producing a sea of superhumanity that in places was unable to move at all for quite some time. And the line for regular ticket entry Saturday morning peaked at over an hour’s wait. But waiting in line is a big part of what a Comic Con is about. Want your favorite celeb’s autograph? Get in a line and bond with other fans over how excited you are to meet him/her. Want a photo op? Get in line and bond with other fans over what his or her best films were. Want to see a panel discussion? Get in line early for a good seat and bond over fond memories of the show or movie. Want to get into the con? Get in line and bond with other fans over how annoying the line is. It’s perhaps the best way to make new friends – remember at Grand Pappy San Diego Comic Con, people will literally camp in lines, waiting full days for their favorite fan experiences. It really is the other con goers who make an experience like RI ComicCon special, memorable and enjoyable from moment to moment.
