L - 2: MORE ON WINDOWS 7 Explanation Windows 7 manages documents and data through files and folders which are stored in different drives. The collection of related data stored on some storage device such as hard disk is referred to as file and name given to a file is called file name. A folder helps you organize your files on the computer. It may contain one or more files as well as folders. A folder present inside another folder is called a subfolder. Each file stored on a computer is represented by an icon. A file icon displays the name of the file and indicates the type of the program required to open that file. A filename extension is associated with each file and consists of three or four letters. It enables you to know the type of the file. A computer consists of many disk drives and each disk drive is assigned a specific letter. You can perform many operation, such as select, create, open, view, the properties, rename, move, copy and delete, on any file or a folder. Renaming means changing the name of an existing file or folder. The Recycle Bin holds the deleted files or folders until you permanently delete them from there or restore them to their original location. Answer the questions. a. What is the difference between a file and a folder? Ans. The collection of related data stored on some storage device such as hard disk is referred to as file. A folder may contain one or more files. It may also contain folders with files in them. b. What is the advantages of creating folders? Ans. When we create many files and store them at the same location, it becomes difficult to find a particular file. A folder helps to organise our files on the computer. It helps us locate any file easily. c. Write the steps to move a folder to a new location? Ans. To move a folder to a new location, follow these steps. 1. Select the folder to be moved. 2. Right-click on the selection and click Cut from the shortcut menu that appears. 3. Go to the location where the selected folder is to be moved. 4. Right-click anywhere in the blank area of the window and then click Paste from the shortcut menu that appears. The selected folder is pasted to the new location. d. Write short notes on the following: Ans. (i) File icon: Each file stored on a computer is represented by an icon.
