PSG BIG Sing in Bromham - February 25th . PSG 93 singers! Newsletter

March 2020

Issue 33

As we said in the February Newsletter – we have been running for six years and in those 6 years we have clocked up 61 songs in our repertoire. (See the list at the end of this Newsletter.) It really is an amazing selection of songs across the three broad genres. Mastering an average of 10 new songs a year and in addition experimenting with various tunes at our Masterclasses, it is quite an achievement. When we consider that most members attend one session a week, the learning rate is very good. We run about 48 weeks of the year so by the time we take out the intense sessions honing songs before an event performance, we are mastering a new song in about 4 weeks.

Talking of Masterclasses, on Sunday 23rd February, Chloe Jordon introduced 23 of us to the intricacies of ’s Phantom of the Opera. Whilst his tunes and melodies sound simple, it is not until you start singing them that the complexity of the timing becomes evident. Lloyd Webber may be a bit formulaic in his works but with 21 Musicals and way over 250 songs written, he is estimated to be worth over £820 million, so BELOW: Chloe Jordan leading the he can’t be doing too much wrong! PSG MASTERCLASS

The masterclasses were introduced a couple of years ago to provide both an

insight into some of the technicalities of singing performance but also to expose choir members to other coaching talent whilst experimenting with harmonies and vocal expression.

PSG CHOIRS CELEBRATES SIX YEARS OF BRINGING POP SOUL AND GOSPEL TO WILTSHIRE

Over the past six years members have come and gone but a steady influx of welcome new members has seen the overall numbers swell to over 130 across the 4 venues Devizes (Mondays) Chippenham (Tuesdays) Melksham/Trowbridge (Wednesdays) and Calne (Thursdays). The monthly BIG Sing’s have become a very popular feature (as seen in the masthead photo above) and the start of March sees the second of the Social Sing Session this time at The Crown in New Park Street Devizes.

As we revive some of the earlier songs from our repertoire, some members have not had a background review. I’ll be OK is another such number, so a short potted history of this song: Released in 2005 by McFly, although their 4th number one, it only spent a month in the Top 40 Charts. Written by band members Fletcher, Poyner & Jones, (Harry Judd “sticks to drumming” - pardon the pun!) it reflects on their philosophy of life when bad luck hits. The video was inspired by the song “The Love of Richard Nixon” by the Manic Street Preachers (released the previous year in 2004) which looked at some of the positive sides of this notorious American President which were overshadowed by the Watergate scandal – yes pop music can have a serious side!

Do let us know what you would like to see in the Newsletter - and we will see what we can do!

See the PSG website: www.psgchoirs.co.uk for timing, details or last minute changes of all our events.
