30 October 2018 Residents encouraged to recycle right for National Recycling Week Spring has sprung at the West Metro Recycling Centre so if your old mattress has sprung its springs then drop it free as part of National Recycling Week which starts on November 12th – 18th. Western Metropolitan Regional Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Stefan Frodsham said National Recycling Week is the perfect time to rethink your own recycling habits and make use of the free domestic recycling services at the West Metro Recycling Centre (formerly Brockway Transfer Station), in Shenton Park. “When we think about recycling we often think about what goes into the kerbside recycling bin like paper, cardboard, hard plastics, aluminium, steel and glass. However, there are other valuable items that can be recycled just not in your kerbside bin”, says Stefan Frodsham WMRC CEO. “In addition to the free mattress recycling that will be offered for the week of National Recycling Week, residents can also drop off items such as aerosols, batteries, computers and mobile phones free all year round at the Centre.” Mr Frodsham said that although most people were confident they knew what could be recycled most still felt they would like access to more information. “In addition to the services available at the West Metro Recycling Centre, a range of free events will also be on offer including Recycle Right workshops at the Grove Community Centre and City of Subiaco library and a behind-the-scenes tour of a recycling facility.” “Residents are also encouraged to use our new Recycling Hotline a free service designed to assist residents with all those tricky recycling questions, the service is available Monday to Friday during office hours by phoning 9384 6711,” Mr Frodsham said. Information will also be provided on the new recycling rules which were accepted by all three of WA’s recycling facilities earlier this year. For all councils in the metropolitan area, kerbside recycling can no longer include soft plastics, aerosols, polystyrene and meat trays. These changes are aimed to decrease contamination rates, and ensure market acceptance. The Western Metropolitan Regional Council operates the West Metro Recycling Centre and is supported by City of Subiaco, , , and Shire of Peppermint Grove.
