EASTON THIS LIVELY ARTS TOWN features a gorgeous historic theatre along with a wealth of shops, galleries, and restaurants.

Founded in 1710, Easton is the county seat and the Eastern Shore’s epicenter of culture. The newly renovated Historic Avalon Theatre, world-class Academy Art Museum, art galleries, boutiques, fine-dining restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and seasonal events lure visitors from far and wide. Easton welcomes international artists, musicians, and tourists with carefully curated and award-winning festivals — there’s no question why it’s been named one of the Top Small Arts Communities in America. This town also has earned a reputation for a foodie culture that’s resulted in outstanding restaurants and a diversity of food markets, including a robust farmers market that’s open April through December.

8-19 Features_final.indd 10 5/2/19 11:44 AM OXFORD SAILOR’S DELIGHT IT’S THE QUINTESSENTIAL SMALL TOWN with tree-lined streets and a general store, plus historic homes featuring front porches and picket fences.

The headwaters of the Tred Avon River start as just a trickle outside Easton and lead directly to Oxford, a maritime community with water on three sides. One of the oldest towns in America, it was one of the first ports in the state of Maryland, and boats still sometimes outnumber cars. Bring your car, your bike, or even just your own two feet aboard the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, the oldest privately owned continuously operating ferry in the United States. It’s been making its scenic journey across the Tred Avon since 1683. For a more hands-on experience, rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the surrounding creeks and inlets. Stake out a space at the small beach on the Tred Avon, where gentle waves attract frolicking families. There’s also a public park with large shade trees, picnic tables, and swings overlooking the water right at the center of town. And you can ogle everything from skiffs to yachts at a clutch of boatyards and marinas.

Sweet Treat  Order a scoop of homemade ice cream at Scottish Highland Creamery, which puts more than 600 flavors into rotation. They’re rated one of the best ice cream shops in America by TripAdvisor and Best of the Eastern Shore for 10 years in a row.

8-19 Features_final.indd 11 5/2/19 1:27 PM COASTAL CLASSIC ST. MICHAELS THIS WATERFRONT TOWN is home to boutiques, restaurants, cafes, galleries, and one of the country’s premier maritime museums.

The charming St. Michaels streetscape remains virtually unchanged from the 19th century, when it was a major hub for shipbuilding on the Chesapeake Bay. Today, St. Michaels is a lively center where watermen and D.C. politicians, artists and sailors, locals and visitors come together, making it ripe for people watching. You may just bump into White Sox baseball legend Harold Baines, who grew up playing at the local high school and still occasionally strolls downtown. For a thorough overview of the region, head to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. You’ll learn about the history of the Bay and the people who work it through a multitude of exhibits. You can work side by side with master shipwrights helping to restore historic ships or build replicas. You can also take a look at the world’s largest } collection of Chesapeake Bay boats, including rare log Sip and Shop canoes, or climb an authentic screwpile lighthouse. St. Michaels is synonymous with shopping thanks to a kaleidoscope of independently owned stores offering The world-renowned Inn at Perry Cabin sits on a waterfront unique clothing, housewares, jewelry, antiques, and toys. estate, and a bevy of charming B&Bs are housed in historic It’s also home to several galleries that sell paintings, homes. Phillips Wharf Environmental Center is a family favorite, offering hands-on exhibits that center on the preservation of the Chesapeake Bay. Kids can even interact with animals native to these waters, including blue crabs, seahorses, and horseshoe crabs.

Architecture fans will want to drive the length of Tilghman Island and look for the five remaining “W” houses. (Hint: The Watermen’s Museum resides in a “W” house.) These unique structures were built near the turn of the last century and named for their unusual shape—a wedge with two wings that form what appears to be a W.

8-19 Features_final.indd 13 5/2/19 11:45 AM PAINTER’S PARADISE Our big skies, coastal light, and picture-perfect landscapes attract creative souls from all over the world.

Talbot County’s treasure trove of galleries, art studios, museums, and festivals makes it a magnet for visitors with artistic sensibilities.

Nowhere is that more true than in the county’s biggest town. Easton has repeatedly ranked among America’s Top Small Towns for Art. Easton’s vibrant arts scene includes galleries and art studios. The Academy Art Museum mounts exhibitions featuring the work of masters from Rubens to Rauschenberg. The recently refreshed Avalon Theatre has been bringing live music and theater to the Eastern Shore since the 1920s.

It’s also is home to one of the country’s premier outdoor painting competitions, and July 2019 marks the 15th anniversary of this legendary event. Not to be outdone, St. Michaels hosts the annual Eastern Shore Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in March. The festival features more than 75 artisans selling sea-glass related jewelry and home décor.

Oxford loves the arts, too. It’s home to the Tred Avon Players, a local theater company that presents musicals and plays, including original works. Each May, the Oxford Fine Arts Fair brings together 40 artists for sales, demos, and discussions — not to mention slabs of strawberry shortcake.

From chamber music to jazz, pop to folk, Talbot County  is alive with the sound of music. In addition to big shows and music festivals, there are also intimate venues like the Stoltz Listening Room on the second story of the Avalon Theatre. Other good places to catch concerts include dockside bars, village pubs, community parks, farmers markets and, come summer, the streets of downtown Easton.

BLUE CRAB Crab is king along the Chesapeake Bay, and Talbot County is the heart of crab country. Few can resist the sweet, delicate meat that’s produced only by blue crabs. Why blue? They’re so named because Bay crabs have a blueish tint when pulled from the water. They take on that telltale red hue only after cooking. Half the fun is cracking open crabs with a wooden mallet and maneuvering a sharp knife to release their meat. From April to October, you can buy bushels of crab at seafood markets or you can order them by the dozen at restaurants, where they will generally be doused with a good coating of Old Bay. Crab also shows up in soups, salads and crab cakes—even cheese dip. 01. BLACK DRUM
