MAKHADO LOCAL MUNICIPALITY Municipal Profile introduction The Housing Development Agency (“HDA”) is a national public development agency that promotes sustainable communities by making well located and appropriately planned land and buildings available for the development of human settlements. The Agency has developed and deployed an information system which includes municipal profiles for selected municipalities. The intent of this profile is to provide guidelines and advice to Provincial Department of Human Settlements as well as municipalities on efficient utilization of land and economic government infrastructure investments in support of integrated human settlements development. about the template The template was compiled for the Housing Development Agency using a number of different data sources. The 2011 Census information from StatsSA was used extensively to represent socio-economic information. The financial profile data was extracted from the municipalities’ most recent financial statements. The Integrated Development Plan (IDP), Housing Development Plan (MHDP) and Spatial Development Framework of each municipality also provided inputs into the municipal profile. Where possible, each source of information is quoted as Makhado Local Municipality part of the specific figure, table or chart. The Microbiological Quality of Private and Communal Boreholes in the Tshitale-Hlanganani Region of the Limpopo Province, South Africa

[email protected] ABSTRACT A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the microbiological quality of 97 private and 97 communal boreholes in the rural Thitale-Hlanganani area of the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Both bacterial and viral indicator microorganisms were used and included total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria, faecal streptococci bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, Clostridium perfringens (vegetative cells and spores) and somatic bacteriophages. The South African criteria guidelines of good (negligible risk of microbial infection; fit for human consumption), marginal (slight risk of microbial infection; must be treated before consumption), and poor (risk of infectious disease transmission; not fit for human consumption) for water used for human consumption, with the relevant counts for each indicator organism, was used to group the private and communal boreholes according to the relevant indicator organism. Results indicated that although the majority of boreholes were placed into the good category, some boreholes did however fall into the marginal and poor categories for each indictor organism. This indicated the potential health risk present to the consumers using these boreholes for domestic water sources. Observations at the boreholes identified various potential sources of pollutions that could affect the microbiological quality of the borehole water. In conclusion, this study indicated the need for more intense monitoring of privately owned boreholes and the education of the rural communities on the installation and the maintenance of both private and communal boreholes. -

The report is available in printed and electronic formats and is presented in two volumes: • Volume 1: Integrated Report is a narrative on major development during the year combined with key statistics that indicate value generated in various ways. • Volume 2: Annual Financial Statements contains the sections on corporate governance and delivery against key performance indicators, in addition to the financial statements. 2018 is the second year in which SANRAL has adopted the practice of integrated reporting, having previously been guided solely by the approach adopted in terms of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). The agency has attempted to demonstrate the varied dimensions of its work and indicate how they are strategically coherent. It has continued to comply with the reporting requirements of the PFMA while incorporating major principles of integrated reporting. This new approach is supported by the adoption of an integrated planning framework in SANRAL’s new strategy, Horizon 2030. In selecting qualitative and quantitative information for the report, the agency has been guided by Horizon 2030 and the principles of disclosure and materiality. -

LIMPOPO WATER MANAGEMENT AREA WATER RESOURCES SITUATION ASSESSMENT MAIN REPORT OVERVIEW The water resources of South Africa are vital to the health and prosperity of its people, the sustenance of its natural heritage and to its economic development. Water is a national resource that belongs to all the people who should therefore have equal access to it, and although the resource is renewable, it is finite and distributed unevenly both spatially and temporally. The water also occurs in many forms that are all part of a unitary and inter-dependent cycle. The National Government has overall responsibility for and authority over the nation’s water resources and their use, including the equitable allocation of water for beneficial and sustainable use, the redistribution of water and international water matters. The protection of the quality of water resources is also necessary to ensure sustainability of the nation’s water resources in the interests of all water users. This requires integrated management of all aspects of water resources and, where appropriate, the delegation of management functions to a regional or catchment level where all persons can have representative participation. This report is based on a desktop or reconnaissance level assessment of the available water resources and quality and also patterns of water requirements that existed during 1995 in the Limpopo Water Management Area, which occupies a portion of the Northern Province. The report does not address the water requirements beyond 1995 but does provide estimates of the utilisable potential of the water resources after so-called full development of these resources, as this can be envisaged at present.
