Timberline occurs at (3700) 3900 m, and at 4750 m vascular plants cease to exist. The alpine vascular flora comprises 237 species from 46 families and 130 genera. Asteraceae (44), Poaceae (42), and Caryophyllaceae (21) possess 45% of the species; none of the remaining families have more than 10 species. Four species are strict endemics, and eight others are near endemics. Thirteen species are restricted to alpine vegetation but also occur outside the study area. Seventy-seven species are endemic to Mexico, 35 of which are endemic to the TMVB. In terms of biogeography, the strongest affinities are with Central or South America. Fifteen species are also native to the Old World. Size of the alpine area seems to not be the determining factor for its floristic diversity. Instead, the time since and extent of the last volcanic activity, in addition to the distance from other alpine islands, appear to be important factors affecting diversity. -

The Asteraceae of Northwestern Pico Zunil, a Cloud Forest in Western Guatemala

Bragg2 1Plant Biology Graduate Program, The University of Texas, 1 University Station A6720, Austin, Texas 78712 2Department of Biology, The University of Nebraska, 6001 Dodge Street, Omaha, Nebraska 68182-0040 Abstract: From 2003 to 2005, 46 genera and 96 species of native Asteraceae were collected on the northwestern slopes of Pico Zunil, a montane cloud forest habitat in southwestern Guatemala. Combining the present survey with past collections, a total of 56 genera and 126 species of Asteraceae have been reported from Pico Zunil, five of which are naturalized Old World species. In the present study, the Heliantheae contains the greatest number of native species (29). The most diverse genus is Ageratina (Eupatorieae, 9 species). Species richness of native Asteraceae measured along an elevational gradient ranged from a low of 16 species at 3400–3542 m to a high of 68 species at 2300–2699 m, where human land use most actively affects cloud forest habitat. Of the plants collected, Ageratina rivalis and Verbesina sousae were new species records for Guatemala. Six more species were new records for the Departmentof Quetzaltenango: Ageratina pichinchensis, A. prunellaefolia, A. saxorum, Koanophyllon coulteri, Stevia triflora, and Telanthophora cobanensis. In addition, 16 of the 96 native species collected are known only from to the western montane departments of Guatemala and the montane regions of southern Chiapas, Mexico. We provide a base of information against which future studies can measure temporal changes in presence of species such as may accompany environmental changes resulting from human activities and/or climate change. -

It is part of the more extensive Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, a priority region for biological research and conservation efforts because of its high levels of biodiversity. A floristic study was conducted in the highlands of the Sierra Mazateca (at altitudes of ca. 1,000–2,750 m) between September 1999 and April 2002, with the objective of producing an inventory of the vascular plants found in this region. Cloud forests are the predominant vegetation type in the highland areas, but due to widespread changes in land use, these are found in different levels of succession. This contribution presents a general description of the sampled area and a checklist of the vascular flora collected during this study that includes 648 species distributed among 136 families and 389 genera. The five most species-rich angiosperm families found in the region are: Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae, and Piperaceae, while the largest fern family is Polypodiaceae. TURNER Plant Resources Center The University of Texas Austin TX 78712 ABSTRACT Oxylobus subglaber , treated as a synonym of O. arbutifolius by Turner and Kerr (1985) in their revision of the genus, is resurrected to specific rank, this a result of additional specimens collected from the general region of the type locality. Oxylobus was previously treated as having but 4 species; the present reestablishment and the previous description of the novelty O. preecei by Turner (1988) now brings the total to 6 species. A key to the taxa is provided, along with a map showing the distribution of the revised set of accepted species. KEY WORDS : Asteraceae, Eupatorieae, Oxylobus , Mexico Oxylobus (Moc. ex DC.) A. Gray is a genus positioned in the subtribe Oxylobinae of the Eupatorieae, along with eight other genera, most notably Ageratina Spach (Hind & Robinson 2009). The present reassessment of the group was occasioned by the resurrection of O. subglaber and the need to account for the recently described O. preecei . So constructed, the genus now contains six well marked species, as follows. 1. Flowering stems with mostly 2–5 pairs of basal leaves; perennial herbs ....................................... Oxylobus adscendens (Sch. Bip. ex Hemsl.) B.L. Rob. & Greenm. 1. Flowering stems with mostly 10 or more pairs of leaves; suffruticose herbs or subshrubs. 2. Involucres 3–4 mm high; peduncles not markedly glandular pubescent.
