Palabras clave: Lares, persecución, nacionalismo, catolicismo, hispanismo Resumen The author highlights the complete agreement in thinking, purposes and actions of both outstanding figures since they met for the first time in 1930 until Albizu’s death in 1965. They even once shared the same prison cell. For both, problems with Justice, accusations and condemnations increased after 1950. Matos Paoli was the longstanding secretary general of the Nationalist party. Although he was accused of subversion, his activity consisted mainly of discourses and patriotic poetry. In 1951, while being imprisoned together Albizu recognized the signs of mental disturbance in his fellow mate. Matos Paoli shared totally the principles and purposes of the Nationalist Party. The author mentions a number of other circumstances in their life, convictions and actions of both men. Keywords: Lares, persecution, nationalism, Catholicism, Hispanicism. 98 CENTRO JOURNAL VOLUME XXVI • NUMBER II • FALL 2014 Between Dissidence and Good NeighBor Diplomacy: Reading Julia de Burgos with the FBI HARRIS FEINSOD ABSTRACT Little is known about Julia de Burgos’s six months as an audit clerk at the Offi ce of the Co- ordinator of Inter-American Affairs in Washington, D.C. (1944-1945). This article recounts this interlude in Burgos’s career by focusing on her FBI fi le and the Hatch Act investigation that led to her termination as a federal employee. Reading the FBI fi le in the vein of literary criticism, the article shows how bureau ghosttranslators characterized Burgos’s political poems as works of dissident Nationalism. In so far as Burgos’s poems navigate the compet- ing ideologies of Puerto Rican Nationalism and Good Neighbor diplomacy, the article links them to a hemispheric matrix of writing—by Elizabeth Bishop, Pablo Neruda, Luis Palés Matos, Samuel Putnam and William Carlos Williams, among others—in which Puerto Rican decolonial politics intersect international communism and anticommunism. [Keywords: Julia de Burgos; Pablo Neruda; Elizabeth Bishop; Federal Bureau of Investigations; Good Neigh- bor Policy; Puerto Rican Nationalism] The author ([email protected]) is Assistant Professor in the Department of English and the Program in Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University. His current book project is Fluent Mundo: Inter-American Poetry from Good Neighbors to Countercultures. His recent writing appears or is forthcoming in American Literary History, American Quarterly, Arcade, Chicago Review, and the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics: Fourth Edition, for which he was assistant editor.

  • Rafael Cancel-Miranda Praised on His 90Th Birthday
Rafael Cancel-Miranda praised on his 90th birthday Mayagüez, July 19 (RHC)-- A group of independence fighters on Saturday exalted the figure of nationalist fighter Rafael Cancel-Miranda, on his 90th birthday, at the Vivaldi Cemetery in Mayagüez, where his remains have been laid to rest since March 8th. Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) leader Julio Muriente Perez lamented that due to his irredeemable death, on July 18th he could not be shared with thousands of his fellow countrymen in his native Mayaguez, in western Puerto Rico, "where his immortal remains now rest." The former president of the Movimiento Independentista Nacional Hostosiano (MINH) said that perhaps the meeting would have been at the grave of the combative nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos, in the cemetery of Old San Juan, where Cancel-Miranda first went after stepping on Puerto Rican soil after his release from prison in September 1979, after spending 25 years in U.S. prisons. Muriente Pérez said that on this occasion "we would have liked to sing to him, recite his poems, remember his anecdotes, laugh at his great sense of humor, re-charge his batteries with his immeasurable desire to live and serve his people and humanity, evoke his admirable perseverance and firmness of principle." Likewise, he said, we would have remembered, with similar respect to his colleagues Oscar Collazo, Lolita Lebron, Irving Flores and Andres Figueroa Cordero, that "like Rafaelito they are our National Heroes." Born on July 18, 1930 in Mayagüez, he dedicated his life to the independence of Puerto Rico under the inspiration of Pedro Albizu Campos, whom as a Cadet of the Republic, a youth organization of the Nationalist Party, he welcomed in December 1947 upon his return from serving a 10-year sentence in Atlanta and New York charged with conspiracy to overthrow the United States government.

  • NELSON RIVERA by the Editors and Nibia Pastrana Santiago
NELSON RIVERA By The Editors and nibia pastrana santiago or Commonwealth, Nelson Rivera wrote a score for a performance that occurred periodically F throughout the run of the exhibition at the ICA. The script is based on speeches by Pedro Albizu Campos (1891–1965), a Puerto Rican attorney and political leader who was the main figure in the movement for Puerto Rican independence from the United States. These speeches, delivered from 1948 to 1950, were made during the US military occupation of Puerto Rico, when it had partial sovereignty and before it was designated as a commonwealth, an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1948, the Puerto Rican Senate passed Law 53, which made it illegal to display the Puerto Rican flag and limited speech against the United States government. The speeches in Rivera’s scripts violated this law by criticizing the US government and advocating for independence. Rivera has required that only nonSpanish speakers perform the score. This gesture also asks that we pay attention to the form and the musicality of political speech. – The Editors Another version of Álbum de familia: no order, no photos, just a few years 2015: The exhibition Sucio Díficil / Nelson Rivera: teatro, música y 1 performance opens at Museo de Caguas. “El sucio difícil, sácalo con Lestoil” (“For difficult dirt, use Lestoil”) was the slogan of a T.V. commercial in Puerto Rico. In Nelson Rivera’s words: “This title is my version of the plantain stain, that dirt never comes out, it is invincible. It was originally a pseudonym, I signed my first theater and performance pieces as “Sucio Difícil”, difícil with a capital ‘D’, like a last name.” 1970: Antonia Martínez Lagares, a 20-year-old student from the town of Arecibo, is shot and killed by a police officer during a student strike at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras.

  • Albizu Campos and the Ponce Massacre
*'*rJ*.:^~*--:^.<i ALBIZU CAMPOS and the by Juan Antonio Corretjer Thirty-five Cents six years of a ten-year term. The remaining time he was under parole in New York City and barred from visiting his native land. In 1934 he had borne arms in the Cuban revolution against dictator Machado. (A revolutionary ''junta" took power from Machado, but a traitor-member of the junta, strong in the army, was able to defeat the other members later, and with the backing of the U.S., set up /us own dictatorship. His name was Batista.) Today, Senor Corretjer leads the Socialist League of Puerto Rico, a Marxist-Leninist organization which solidarizes with Fidel Castro and predicts that the Puerto Rican struggle for independence will to a large degree follow the Cuban example. His party is based on the working class, and his ideas for Puerto Rican liberation are rooted in Marxism. While he sees the road to Puerto Rican independence going at the same time to socialism, he has nothing in common with those pseudo-Marxists who say there can be no independence for Puerto Rico until the U.S. is socialist. (And then, they say, no independence will be necessary!) He is a vigorous man in his middle fifties respected by all shades of radical and nationalist opinion in Puerto Rico and much loved by his friends and followers. He resides with his wife, Consuelo, in Guaynabo (very near to San Juan). He edits "Pabellon" (the organ of the Socialist League), the newsletter, " Quincena" and other literary material. Juan Antonio Corretjer ABOUT THE AUTHOR Juan Antonio Corretjer is one of the Old Guard of Puerto Rico's anti-Yankee revolution, and at the same time a prophet and fighter for the country's revolutionary future.
