Copy On Write is used on modern file systems for providing (1) metadata and data consistency using transactional semantics, (2) cheap and instant backups using snapshots and clones. This thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part focuses on the design and performance of Copy On Write based file systems. Recent efforts aiming at creating a Copy On Write based file system are ZFS, Btrfs, ext3cow, Hammer, and LLFS. My work focuses only on ZFS and Btrfs, since they support the most advanced features. The main goals of ZFS and Btrfs are to offer a scalable, fault tolerant, and easy to administrate file system. I evaluate the performance and scalability of ZFS and Btrfs. The evaluation includes studying their design and testing their performance and scalability against a set of recommended file system benchmarks. Most computers are already based on multi-core and multiple processor architec- tures. Because of that, the need for using concurrent programming models has increased. Transactions can be very helpful for supporting concurrent program- ming models, which ensure that system updates are consistent. Unfortunately, the majority of operating systems and file systems either do not support trans- actions at all, or they simply do not expose them to the users. -

Compiler Construction Assignment 3 { Spring 2018 Robert van Engelen µc for the JVM µc (micro-C) is a small C-inspired programming language. In this assignment we will implement a compiler in C++ for µc. The compiler compiles µc programs to java class files for execution with the Java virtual machine. To implement the compiler, we can reuse the same concepts in the code-generation parts that were done in programming assignment 1 and reuse parts of the lexical analyzer you implemented in programming assignment 2. We will implement a new parser based on Yacc/Bison. This new parser utilizes translation schemes defined in Yacc grammars to emit Java bytecode. In the next programming assignment (the last assignment following this assignment) we will further extend the capabilities of our µc compiler by adding static semantics such as data types, apply type checking, and implement scoping rules for functions and blocks. Computational Intelligence to aid Text File Format Identification Santhilata Kuppili Venkata, Alex Green The National Archives Abstract One of the challenges faced in digital preservation is to identify the file types when the files can be opened with simple text editors and their extensions are unknown. The problem gets complicated when the file passes through the test of human readability, but would not make sense how to put to use! The Text File Format Identification (TFFI) project was initiated at The National Archives to identify file types from plain text file contents with the help of computing intelligence models. A methodology that takes help of AI and machine learning to automate the process was successfully tested and implemented on the test data. The prototype developed as a proof of concept has achieved up to 98.58% of accuracy in detecting five file formats. 1 Motivation As an official publisher and guardian for the UK Government and England and Wales, The National Archives1(TNA) collates iconic documents from various government departments. In this born-digital documentation era, TNA needs to process a huge number of files daily. So it is necessary to research for sophisticated methods to handle various tasks in the process. File format identification of plain text files is one such example. 1.1 How a simple plain text file can create confusion? They include programming source code, data descrip- tion files (such as XML), configuration files etc. -

Such a requirement arises naturally when the variables represent enti- ties like packages or people that can not be fractionally divided — at least, not in a mean- ingful way for the situation being modeled. Integer variables also play a role in formulat- ing equation systems that model logical conditions, as we will show later in this chapter. In some situations, the optimization techniques described in previous chapters are suf- ficient to find an integer solution. An integer optimal solution is guaranteed for certain network linear programs, as explained in Section 15.5. Even where there is no guarantee, a linear programming solver may happen to find an integer optimal solution for the par- ticular instances of a model in which you are interested. This happened in the solution of the multicommodity transportation model (Figure 4-1) for the particular data that we specified (Figure 4-2). Even if you do not obtain an integer solution from the solver, chances are good that you’ll get a solution in which most of the variables lie at integer values. Specifically, many solvers are able to return an ‘‘extreme’’ solution in which the number of variables not lying at their bounds is at most the number of constraints. If the bounds are integral, all of the variables at their bounds will have integer values; and if the rest of the data is integral, many of the remaining variables may turn out to be integers, too. -

CHAPTER 4 Alias Manager 4 This chapter describes how your application can use the Alias Manager to establish and resolve alias records, which are data structures that describe file system objects (that is, files, directories, and volumes). You create an alias record to take a “fingerprint” of a file system object, usually a file, that you might need to locate again later. You can store the alias record, instead of a file system specification, and then let the Alias Manager find the file again when it’s needed.
