Today these areas, being located in prime locations are facing real estate pressures, inviting fishing villages to redevelop. Sale component including Five Star Rehab for Hotel, Entertainment facilities, fishing village Water Park, etc Often these models of redevelopment are market driven and relegate the existing communities to their margins without considering their needs of infrastructure, housing and public space. We have not been able to clearly separate fishing villages from slums in the city, in our mapping efforts. In fact, many a times the SRA regulation becomes a means of usurping land. CRZ Coastal Regulation Zone The CRZ regulation has been set up by the government to safeguard sensitive environmental systems of the coastline. Developers have actively fought against this regulation. In fact this regulation has been recently relaxed. It was this that provoked fishing communities to safeguard themselves from these relaxations, the fishing community has lobbied with the government to bring them under the CRZ III regulation. Under this regulation, the fishing villages cannot be developed like the rest of the city. Though this protects the fishing village land, it does not address the needs of the fishing community for its own growth and development. malvani juhu moragaon In order to develop a specific imagination for the fishing villages, the fishing community approached the KRVIA. We took up two villages to study in detail. Stage 1: Meetings with community KRVIA Design Cell representatives of various fishing villages at both local and national level. th Stage 2a: Taking up two fishing villages for 4 year KRVIA a situation analysis. Urban Design Studio Stage 2b: Taking up 8 fishing villages for a 3rd year landscape study of ecological relationships and studio community patterns Stage 2c: Socioeconomic study with one th of the fishing villages conducted by TISS.

Introduction It is well known that Mumbai city is comprised of seven islands till 1857. Gradually with invasion the islands were merged by the invaders and now the entire city is one big island. The island city has a rich heritage of natural resources like the forests, lakes mangroves, etc. The city in the past was self sufficient in terms of the basic amenities like housing, food, water, electricity it provided to its inhabitants. However with growing population and pollution the city is now adding to the pressure on the adjacent districts for its water and electricity requirements. It is common knowledge that Mumbai has three lakes i.e. Tulsi, Powai and Vihar that used to provide water to Mumbai residents. Very few actually know that the city is blessed with many more in its BMC jurisdiction. These lakes are either polluted by human sewage or industrial effluents and have remained neglected with increasing urbanization. With depleting forests and water resources it is about time that the existing lakes are given a chance to serve the society again. How do we define lakes? There is considerable uncertainty about defining the difference between lakes and ponds. For example, limnologists have defined lakes as waterbodies which are simply a larger version of a pond or which have wave action on the shoreline, or where wind induced turbulence plays a major role in mixing the water column.

    Acknowledgements This document has emerged from a partnership of disparate groups of concerned individuals and organizations who have been engaged with the issue of exploring sustainable housing solutions in the city of Mumbai. The Kamala Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture (KRVIA), which has compiled this document, contributed its professional expertise to a collaborative endeavour with Society for Promotion of Area Resource Centres (SPARC), an NGO involved with urban poverty. The discussion is an attempt to create a new language of sustainable urbanism and architecture for this metropolis. Thanks to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) authorities for sharing all the drawings and information related to Dharavi. This project has been actively guided and supported by members of the National Slum Dwellers Federation (NSDF) and Dharavi Bachao Andolan: especially Jockin, John, Anand, Savita, Anjali, Raju Korde and residents’ associations who helped with on-site documentation and data collection, and also participated in the design process by giving regular inputs. The project has evolved in stages during which different teams of researchers have contributed. Researchers and professionals of KRVIA’s Design Cell who worked on the Dharavi Redevelopment Project were Deepti Talpade, Ninad Pandit and Namrata Kapoor, in the first phase; Aditya Sawant and Namrata Rao in the second phase; and Sujay Kumarji, Kairavi Dua and Bindi Vasavada in the third phase.
