OUTREACH NOTICE Natural Resource Specialist (Recreation, Lands, Special Uses) GS-0101/0401-11 Blanco Ranger District, White River National Forest Please resond by June 30, 2017 The Blanco Ranger District on the White River National Forest will be filling a permanent full time GS-401/ 101-11 Natural Resource Specialist (Recreation, Lands and Special Uses). Located in Meeker, Colorado this is the primary district staff responsible for the development, implementation and administration of recreation, Wilderness, trails, recreation special uses program, travel management and lands programs. This position supervises 2 employees : GS-9 recreation special uses, GS-7 Wilderness/trails (currently vacant) and oversees the management of: 5 Fee Campgrounds (under Concession), 18 Recreation Residences, 18 Outfitter and Guide permits, 3-6 annual Recreation Events, 350 miles of non-motorized trails, 100 miles of motorized trails, and snowmobile trails. The incumbent will have opportunities to work with local, state, county and city officials, special use permit holders, non-profit organizations, and volunteers to build on existing programs. The position is responsible for working with other District and Forest staff in the development of the Forest recreation budget and program of work. Government housing is not available. White River National Forest The White River National Forest is a world-renowned recreation destination. With more than 12 million visitors per year, the White River is the most visited recreation forest in the country. The Forest spans 2.3 million acres, and includes: • 8 Wilderness areas • 12 ski resorts • 4 major reservoirs • 10 peaks higher than 14,000 feet in elevation • 2,500 miles of trails • 1,900 miles of Forest Service system roads The Supervisor’s Office is in Glenwood Springs, with district offices in Aspen, Carbondale, Eagle, Meeker, Minturn, Rifle and Silverthorne. Blanco Ranger District The Blanco Ranger District headquarters is located in Meeker, Colorado approximately 4 hours from Denver and 2 hours from Aspen and Grand Junction. The District is co-located with the Bureau of Land Management’s White River Field Office. The district manages approximately 350,000 acres of the White River National Forest including the majority of the historic Flat Tops Wilderness, which encompasses approximately 235,000 acres and includes Trappers Lake and the ‘Cradle of Wilderness’. District elevation ranges from 6,500’ to 12,000’. The Blanco Ranger District provides access to a wide range of recreational opportunities. The Wagon Wheel OHV trail system connects the community of Meeker with Blanco district trails and BLM lands. The area is well known for outstanding hunting with one of the largest elk herds in North America. Blanco has a small but mighty permanent staff of 8 and very little turnover. Other district programs include range, wildlife, fisheries and information/education. In 2012, the district provided the US Capitol Christmas Tree. Meeker, Colorado At the west end of the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway, the community of Meeker is a quiet complement to the White River’s resort based districts. Meeker, in eastern Rio Blanco County, is a predominantly agricultural town of approximately 2,475 people. Meeker is centrally located between the White River Field Office’s BLM lands and the White River and Routt National Forests. Approximately 75% of Rio Blanco County’s lands are federally owned, offering diverse landscapes and recreation opportunities. Meeker has a new elementary school and recreation center, an airport (EEO), acres of parks and miles of trails connecting to adjacent public land. Pioneers Medical Center recently constructed a new 87,000 square-foot medical facility for family and pediatric care, emergency care, and a nursing home. Meeker hosts the Range Call- the oldest annual rodeo in Colorado, the Wagon Wheel OHV Rendezvous, a free summer concert series and the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials.
