Chinese Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) Character: Accent, informal hedge or screen. Evergreen perennial. Size: Usually 5’-10’ in Phoenix. Some as small as 2’. Flowers: Free flowering year-round, mostly reds, pinks & oranges. Pruning: Prune lightly/heavily in late winter/early spring.

Mexican Bird-of-Paradise (Caesalpinia mexicana) Character: Large seasonal accent shrub. Semi-evergreen. Size: Vigorous and sprawling to 10’. Flowers: Festive yellow flowers in early spring and late fall. Pruning: Selectively prune in late May/early June after flowering

Red Bird-of-Paradise (Caesalpinia pulcherrima) Character: Large seasonal accent shrub. Semi-evergreen. Usually freezes to ground in winter. Size: Vigorous and upright to 10’. Flowers: Flowers are a brilliant mix of yellow, orange to red. Pruning: Prune to any desired height in winter.

Indian Hawthorn (Raphiolepis indica) Character: Small informal hedge, accent, border plant. Evergreen. Lady Banks Rose (Rosa banksiea) Character: Mostly evergreen climbing rose, arching, cascading, sprawling. Thorn less. Size: Vigorous to 50’. Flowers: Abundant clusters of white/yellow flowers in mid spring. Pruning: Prune only after flowering until July.

Creeping Fig (Ficus pumila) Character: Deceptively delicate, woodsy, tropical to subtropical looking evergreen vine. Self-adhesive. Size: Slow when young becoming aggressive and vigorous, spreading to up to 1000 to 5000 ft2. Flowers: No seasonal color. Flowers are very small and green. Pruning: Prune hard every few years to control vigorous spread.
