Semi-evergreen. Size: Slow growing to 40’. Flowers: Small fragrant cream colored flowers in summer. Pruning: Keep canopy elevated. Do not shear. Blue Palo Verde (Parkinsonia florida) Character: Medium wide spreading native tree. Semi- evergreen. Size: Moderate growth to 30’. Flowers: Yellow flowers in early April. Pruning: Keep canopy elevated. Remove water sprouts/suckers Mesquite (Prosopis alba) Character: Large spreading shade tree. Semi-evergreen. Size: Irregular spreading to 30’ Flowers: Inconspicuous. Pruning: Requires regular pruning. Keep canopy elevated Indian Laurel Fig (Ficus microcarpa nitida) Character: Large dense shade tree. Evergreen. Size: Moderate growth to 50’-80’. Flowers: Small fragrant cream colored flowers in summer. Pruning: Keep canopy elevated. Do not shear. Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina) Character: Medium formal shade tree. Evergreen. Size: Moderate and spreading to 30’-50’. Flowers: Inconspicuous. Pruning: Elevate canopy only if necessary Texas Plume/Orchid Tree (Bauhinia lunarioides) Character: Small single or multiple trunk accent tree. Rounded delicate and open. Tends to sprout at base. Semi-evergreen. Size: Moderate growth to 12’-15’. Flowers: White to pinkish flowers in the spring. Pruning: Prune to open or elevate canopy as needed Monk’s Pepper Tree/Chaste Tree Character: Large background shrub or small multiple trunk tree. Size: Moderate to fast growing to 20’. Flowers: Spikes of white to blue-violet flowers early summer. Pruning: Elevate canopy as needed. Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora) Character: Medium to large woody evergreen shrub to small multiple-trunk tree. Size: Slow to moderate to 10’-25’. Flowers: Very fragrant, beautiful blue-violet flowers in late Feb/early March. Pruning: Prune in May after flowering only if needed. Pigmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) Character: Small, graceful feather palm with dense canopy Size: Slow and clumping to 6’-10’. Flowers: No seasonal color. Flowers are inconspicuous. Pruning: Only to remove dead fronds. Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta) Character: Evergreen small branched palm. Fern-like. Size: Slow growing to 10’. Branching with age. Flowers: No seasonal color. Cone bearing. Pruning: Only to remove dead fronds Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis) Character: Vertical accent. Evergreen perennial. Multiple upright trunks. Size: Slow growing to 20’ Flowers: Clusters of orange to crème colored flowers SHRUBS AND SCREENINGS Lantana hybrids (Lantana montevidensis) Character: Ground cover to informal hedge. Evergreen, but will suffer some frost and freeze damage. Size: Depends on cultivar. Flowers: Comes in a variety of colors and flowers continuously. Pruning: Prune lightly as needed in summer. Prune heavily in the spring after winter temperatures past. Bougainvillea hybrids (Bougainvillea glabra) Character: Accent plant that depending on cultivar can be used as ground cover, shrub, screening or trained on a trellis or fence. Evergreen but will suffer some frost damage. Size: Some to 40’. Some dwarf cultivars only to 2’. Flowers: Colorful bracts produced most of the year, usually bright pink, magenta and some purple cultivars. Pruning: Prune to shape and control spread. Can be pruned heavily in the spring after winter temperatures have past. Chinese Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) Character: Accent, informal hedge or screen. Evergreen perennial. Size: Usually 5’-10’ in Phoenix. Some as small as 2’. Flowers: Free flowering year-round, mostly reds, pinks & oranges. Pruning: Prune lightly/heavily in late winter/early spring. Blue Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) Character: Open, spreading shrub with lobed leaves. Evergreen. Size: Fast growing to 3’-6’ with equal spread. Flowers: Bluish, lilac to purple flowers throughout the year. Pruning: Lightly prune if needed. Mexican Bird-of-Paradise (Caesalpinia mexicana) Character: Large seasonal accent shrub. Semi-evergreen. Size: Vigorous and sprawling to 10’. Flowers: Festive yellow flowers in early spring and late fall. Pruning: Selectively prune in late May/early June after flowering Red Bird-of-Paradise (Caesalpinia pulcherrima) Character: Large seasonal accent shrub. Semi-evergreen. Usually freezes to ground in winter. Size: Vigorous and upright to 10’. Flowers: Flowers are a brilliant mix of yellow, orange to red. Pruning: Prune to any desired height in winter. Texas Ranger (Leucophyllum frutescens) Character: Informal accent hedge. Evergreen. Size: Moderate to 8’-12’. Flowers: Many magenta to lavender flowers bloom on new wood during warm season. Pruning: Can handle sever pruning in late February/early March. Chihuahuan Sage (Leucophyllum laevigatum) Character: Informal accent hedge. Evergreen and stiffly open. Size: Moderate growth to 3’-4’. Flowers: Many fragrant light purple flowers bloom on new wood during the warm season. Pruning: Little required. Light pruning in the winter. Yellow Bells (Tecoma stans) Character: Floral accent, background screen, specimen around patios. Size: Vigorous and upright to 15’-20’, but can easily be maintained to 5’-10’. Flowers: Yellow clusters of trumpet flowers all season. Pruning: Prune in winter to control height and strengthen. Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica) Character: Informal hedge, accent, edging, small and upright. Size: Clumping habit from 18”-10’. Flowers: White flowers in mid-spring, small red berries in fall and red leaves in coldest weather. Pruning: Do not shear! Remove old canes to ¼ their height Ruellia (Ruellia brittoniana) Character: Floral and foliar accent and filler shrub. Becomes full and lush with age. ‘Katie’ is dwarf cultivar. Size: Fast growing to 3’-6’. ‘Katie’ is 10”-12”. Flowers: Violet, pink, white or blue flowers in warm season. Pruning: Prune to shape anytime. Heavily prune dwarfs in winter. Indian Hawthorn (Raphiolepis indica) Character: Small informal hedge, accent, border plant. Evergreen. Size: Slow to moderate growth to 2’-8’ Flowers: Clusters of small flowers ranging from white to pink to red. Blooms in March. Pruning: Prune very little in May after flower bloom is done. Oleander (Nerium oleander) Character: Evergreen shrub, informal hedge, screening. Size: Depending on cultivar from 4’-20’. Flowers: Flowers from April to September. Flower colors include white, pink, salmon and red. Pruning: Prune in late Feb/early March to any height. Desert Honeysuckel (Justicia spicigera) Character: Evergreen shrub, open, informal hedge or large scale ground cover. Attracts hummingbirds. Size: Slow/ moderate growth to 5’ with equal/greater spread. Flowers: Clusters of orange tubular flowers in the warm season. Pruning: Lightly prune in the winter. Cape Honeysuckel (Tacomaria capensis) Character: Evergreen vine or shrub, running, sprawling. Large scale ground cover or informal hedge. Size: Moderate to fast growth to 6’-8’ with greater spread. Flowers: Brilliant orange to deep red flowers during Oct/March. Pruning: Prune to control spread. Red Fairy Duster (Calliandra californica) Character: Accent shrub. Open, stiff and informal. Size: Moderate growth to 3’-8’. Flowers: Bright red pin cushion flowers in spring and fall. Attracts humming birds. Pruning: Do not shear this plant. Selectively prune early summer. Hop Seed Bush (Dodonea Viscosa) Character: Evergreen shrub, informal or formal hedge depending on cultivator, screening. Size: fast growing, depending on cultivator 3’-20’ Flowers: Cloudy white flower in warmer months Pruning: Prune to control. Orange Jubilee (Tacoma Sans) Character: Floral accent, background screen, specimen around patios. Size: Vigorous and upright to 15’-20’, but can easily be maintained to 5’10’. Flowers: Orange/red clusters of trumpet flowers all season. Pruning: Prune in winter to control height and strengthen. Sky Flower (Duranta Erecta) Character: Floral accent, background screen, specimen around patios. Size: Fast growing to 3’-6’ with equal spread Flowers: Purple flower in warmer months Pruning: Prune to control spread ACCENT PLANTS Century Plant (Agave americana) Character: Evergreen perennial. Strong accent or focal point. Succulent leaf tips are sharp. Forms basal offshoots. Size: Slow to 3’-7’. Flowers: After about 10 years it will produce a single large tall flower stalk. Pruning: None Smooth Agave (Agave desmettiana) Character: Evergreen perennial. Strong accent or focal point. Is considered a ‘soft agave’. Forms basal offshoots. Size: Moderate to fast from 3’-6’ with equal spread. Flowers: After more than 8 years it will produce a single large flower stalk. Pruning: None Twin Flowered Agave (Agave geminiflora) Character: Herbaceous perennial. Textual accent with succulent linear leaves. Size: Slow to 3’ height and 4’ spread. Flowers: After several years, it will produce a 8’-12’ flower stalk Pruning: None Desert Spoon (Dasylirion wheeleri) Character: Large evergreen agave-like shrub with twisting strappy leaves.
