Size: Usually 5’-10’ in Phoenix. Some as small as 2’. Flowers: Free flowering year-round, mostly reds, pinks & oranges. Pruning: Prune lightly/heavily in late winter/early spring. Blue Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) Character: Open, spreading shrub with lobed leaves. Evergreen. Size: Fast growing to 3’-6’ with equal spread. Flowers: Bluish, lilac to purple flowers throughout the year. Pruning: Lightly prune if needed. Mexican Bird-of-Paradise (Caesalpinia mexicana) Character: Large seasonal accent shrub. Semi-evergreen. Size: Vigorous and sprawling to 10’. Flowers: Festive yellow flowers in early spring and late fall. Pruning: Selectively prune in late May/early June after flowering Red Bird-of-Paradise (Caesalpinia pulcherrima) Character: Large seasonal accent shrub. Semi-evergreen.
