It’s been nearly one month since former New York Giants superstar, Odell Beckham Jr., was traded to the in exchange for a first-round pick, a third-round pick, and safety .

There is no disputing New York Giants (https://gmenhq.com/2019/04/08/new-york-giants- niners-doth-protest-much-odell-beckham-trade/) fans have attempted to become optimistic about this controversial move. With the acquisitions of the two draft picks from the Browns, Dave Gettleman (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/executives/GettDa0.htm) will now be on the clock twelve times throughout this month’s NFL Draft.

But with all of that being said, most Big Blue fans are still in utter disbelief, and rightfully so.

Aside from how he was beloved by the fans, and his commendable activity in the community, Odell Beckham (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BeckOd00.htm) is undoubtedly a once-in-a-generation type athlete. The eye test says so.

Oh, and so do the numbers. Men lie, women lie, but statistics generally don’t:

Tommy Beer @TommyBeer

Odell Beckham Jr. has played in 59 games in his NFL career.

Career stats thru their first 59 games:

OBJ: 5,476 receiving yards and 44 TD's Jerry Rice: 4,852 yards, 49 TD's Larry Fitz: 4,373 yards, 32 TD's Calvin Johnson: 4,139 yards, 33 TD's Antonio Brown: 4,072 yards, 20 TD's

Over the past few years, Beckham has put up ridiculous numbers with an aging, average quarterback and virtually no offensive line. Thus, it’s plausible to surmise that a potential deal for him would contain valuable compensation, right?

That’s exactly the narrative that Gettleman was trying to spin.

Per NJ Advance Media (https://www.nj.com/giants/2019/03/giants-dave-gettleman-on-odell- beckham-trade-were-you-dont-give-up-talent-and-we-didnt-sign-him-to-trade-him- lies.html):

“Frankly, what changed is the other team made an offer we couldn’t refuse.”

This is flat out nonsense.

Gettleman did not trade Beckham because of an astonishing offer. It has been speculated that the New York Giants front office has liked Peppers since the 2017 Draft.

Well, if the Giants were so impressed by Jabrill Peppers (https://www.pro-football- reference.com/players/P/PeppJa00.htm) in 2017, why didn’t they just select him with 23rd pick in that draft?

Recently, ESPN (http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/26432284/this-real-how-browns- pulled-odell-beckham-jr-trade) reported that the were willing to make a better offer:

“The 49ers were stunned. Lynch and Gettleman had multiple conversations spanning weeks. Despite the 49ers monitoring the situation MORE FROM GMEN HQ closely, they ultimately never heard from the Poll: NY Giants fans split on whether fans Giants before the trade was made. Gettleman’s will be back in 2020 contact with Lynch ended the days prior to the conversations with Cleveland. It’s strongly NY Giants mum of fates of Aldrick believed the 49ers would have been willing to Rosas/ for now offer more for a wide receiver of Beckham’s How much of recent NY Giants culture stature, according to a league source.” problems lie with Dave Gettleman? Should the NY Giants retain kicker Aldrick This news truly reveals the eagerness, as well as Rosas despite legal trouble? carelessness in which Gettleman displayed when 5 NY Giants with the most to prove during discussing potential deals. So why was he so impatient? the 2020 season

It wasn’t because of Beckham’s injury history. It also wasn’t because of the preposterous notion that the Giants are a better team without him.

Again, the statistics don’t lie:

First Things First @FTFonFS1 "He's about himself, not about winning. And if the Giants want to win, they should get rid of Odell Beckham Jr."

The real reason that Beckham is now with the Cleveland Browns is simply because Gettleman was not fond of him long before he took the job as general manager of the New York Giants. It’s important to remember that Gettleman served the same position for the Carolina Panthers in 2016, a season in which cornerback Josh Norman (https://www.pro-football- reference.com/players/N/NormJo01.htm) and Beckham made headlines for their infamous brawl during a regular season game.

It’s also reasonable to assume that, along with Gettleman, head coach Pat Shurmu (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/ShurPa0.htm)r was fed up with several of Beckham’s post game comments and various antics last season, though they seemingly didn’t have rationale to be.

It’s besides the point, but the media has decided that when Tom Brady (https://www.pro- football-reference.com/players/B/BradTo00.htm) gets fired up on the sideline, that is perceived as part of his passion and competitiveness. On the other hand, when Beckham gets heated on the sideline because his team is losing games, he’s viewed as a “locker room cancer.”

The New York Giants may have two first round picks this year, but they’ve truly messed up big time. They managed to split up two generational athletes, (https://www.pro- football-reference.com/players/B/BarkSa00.htm) and Beckham, and it’s all because of Gettleman’s personal feelings. Don’t let his comments to the contrary fool you.
