THE FUTURE OF ROGATE'S WHITE HORSE PUB AND OTHER VILLAGE AMENITIES Summary of residents’ survey Introduction A survey of residents was carried out during January 2021 to inform a review of the future of the village and a project to consider a community bid for the White Horse pub. The survey was carried out mainly online with some 550+ people, from Rogate and Trotton community mailing lists, invited by email – and further people invited by forwarded links. A further 500 copies of the survey were printed (at START’s expense) and distributed by hand (at R&T News’ expense) or left in the Rogate shop / post office. Responses By the time this analysis was done, 280 responses had been submitted. Of these, 11 were not included as no name, address or contact details were given, or they were duplicated submissions. The results are held on START’s secure database and can be analysed further on request, but personal details will not be shared with anyone (except where respondents asked to be added to other lists. Full-text responses are also stored in the database and can be provided (anonymised) to working groups as appropriate later. Brief summary • The shop and post office, along with the primary school and village hall were perceived as most important to the future of the village, though all the other current amenities scored well. (Q1) • Community events came out as most important as a use for the recreation ground, followed by the children’s playground and parking (both for the hall and rec and for more general village use). Less importance was attached to the sporting facilities. (Q2) • There was a desire to see a social venue in the future, and road safety through the village on the A272 was highlighted by a number of respondents. (Q3) • When the pub was in operation, the character and ambience was perceived as the main attraction along with the social aspect. • Poor food, poor customer service and a need for refurbishment were highlighted as dislikes. (Q6 and Q7) • The report identified the need for traditional pub grub as the main requirement to make respondents use the pub. (Q8) • It looks as though something like £100k could be forthcoming from respondents. (Q10) • There were excellent offers of assistance to the various proposed working groups (Q12) • There was a disappointing number of respondents in the 18 – 24 age bracket. Overall, there did seem to be a high value placed on community events, venues and opportunities where people could mix with others in the community. CONTENTS 1.
