Volume 15, Issue 12 Snow Lake, June 9, 2011 Snow Lake welcomes a new corporal Did you Know?

• That some month's back, the town was asked questions about the com- munities water treatment system? They were: 1. What is the cost on av- erage to treat a cubic metre of water? 2. What amount of water is treated at the Water Treatment Plant versus the amount of water that is charged to local consumers? The answers from the town on these are: 1) In 2009, the total budgeted expense for water was $197,316.72 and 161,090 cubic me- tres were produced. So theoretically it cost $1.22 to produce a cubic metre of water. However, it is important to note that this does not take into account the inevitable expense of the sewage treatment, the $48,721.00 deficit in the utility in 2009, or the 2010 municipal accounting changes, which allocated additional expenses to the utility. 2) In 2009, 161,090 cubic metres of water were produced and 97,507 were sold to consumers. The difference in those two numbers can be chalked up to the use of water Snow Lake's new Corporal Jason Schalla ~ photo by Marc Jackson bleeders, water breaks, water used in the Corporal. Purchasing a Weatheradio receiver would also give you 24-hour-a-day access to Environment Canada’s weather watches and warnings. Take shelter When severe weather threatens, find shelter immediately. Do not follow storms in your car or attempt to take photographs. If you’re indoors, take shelter in the basement. If there is no basement, find shelter in a small interior ground floor room away from windows. If you are in an office or apartment building, take shelter in an inner hallway or room, preferably in the basement. If you are caught outdoors, lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head. Be prepared Storms often strike quickly so it’s important that you have a plan in place before severe weather hits. Prepare a “72 Hour” emergency kit — Your kit should include food, clothing, blankets, medication, bottled water and first aid and tool kits, as well as flashlights and a battery-powered radio — with extra batteries for both. You should have enough supplies in your kit to last 72 hours. Reduce the hazards on your property — Trim rotting or dead branches and cut down dead trees on your property. You should also check the drainage around your house to reduce the possibility of basement flooding. Secure everything that might be blown around or torn loose. The big mauve or purple Quonset that nestles between the Town of Snow of Snow Lake's Brentwood lift station and the Bella Apartments. It's called the Elks' Hall and has sat at this prominent location for 44 years. However the building's inhabitants have been a part of the community a tad longer. Snow Lake's Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks celebrated 50 local years of existence on the evening of Friday June 10th, and a number of community members, both past and present , were there to help them do it up right! The evening began at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres - organizers did well in enlisting a couple of very attentive Girl Guides (Holly McLaughlin and Angel Cann) to bring around the appetizers, tea, and coffee. They were never far from anyone's attention and seemed to almost sense who needed what and when! With the pre-supper mingling winding down, Elks' Member and Mistress of Ceremonies, Brenda Forsyth-Flamand made her way to the microphone. "Fifty years, wow, I'm not even that old," Forsyth exclaimed as she introduced the head table. Starting with Stuart and Ellen Bridgeman, she made her way from one end to the other. "Stuart is one of our longest standing members, he has 38 years in the Elks," said the Emcee. "Next there was Cauline and Daryl Armsworthy. We want the world for you, but much more than that – and we don’t care if it’s a cliché – we want you to be happy. If we had magic powers, we’d wish on you the ability to take pleasure in small things – a swim in the sea, a good book read at the beach on a summer's day, a delicious meal shared with friends. Don’t forgot to live in the present. Don’t be concerned with the future and your place in it... so much so that you forget to enjoy being young. We are with you as you look into the mirror and we would do anything to give you the gift of loving yourself as much as we love you. Of seeing your reflection and thinking how lucky you are to be you. We never want you to deprive yourself of food, to twist round and ask whether your bum looks big, to lie awake at night, as every girl we've ever met has done, and promise yourself that tomorrow you’ll start that diet. So, as well as living in the present, we hope you’ll be courageous, seize opportunities, take risks, travel. Always stand for something, or you will surely fall for anything. Love Mom, But with all that we want for you, we know you will go your own way. And however independent you become, don’t forget, whenever you need us, we’ll be there. If your heart is broken, or your life seems overwhelmed Bethany, Elysha, call 1-800 MOM & DAD. We love you Ruggy and we are so proud of you. Always remember to Fully rely on God. and Ben Page 19 THE Underground PRESS June 23, 2011
