Ray joined the Association of Cricket Umpires & Scorers in 1971 and has officiated regularly ever since as an umpire and scorer, becoming a top recreational umpire in the country, having umpired in County 2nds, Minor Counties, ECB, Combined Services, University, Southern League and Hampshire League. Ray has toured and officiated in many countries throughout the world. Since 1976 he has been an inspirational tutor to hundreds of umpires and scorers within Hampshire and the Combined Services and led the ICC Europe Development Programme. Ray founded the South Coast Panel and served as Chairman, Treasurer, Trainer and Registration Officer on Regional Committees for Combined Services, leagues and officials organisations. He has been a physiotherapist for Hampshire CCC, a Tournament Referee for ICC Europe, an accredited ECB Association of Cricket Officials (ECBACO) verifier and still serves on many local and national committees. Ray’s integrity, professionalism and overall contribution to officiating, on and off the field, have been recognised by Honorary Life Memberships of both the South Coast Panel and the ECBACO." CHRIS WESTBROOK: "Chris has been involved with Hursley Park Cricket Club for 61 years since first playing for the club at 13 years old. He has captained the 1st XI to National Village glory at Lord’s and held all the major administrative roles at the club as well as being a committee member for over 50 years. It is impossible to sum up his immeasurable contribution to the club, cricket in general and the literally thousands of people and cricketers who Chris has influenced over the years, but here are a few highlights: − he is the first at the club and last to leave; − prepared wickets and the ground and carried out every conceivable task around the ground and club house; − fought legal battles on behalf of the club; − dealt with death, retirement and various difficult matters on behalf of the club; − headed up the groundstaff and is a qualified Pitch Advisor and Association of Cricket Groundsmen member; − brought on youngsters including the Hampshire wicket keeper Adi Aymes and Chris Tremlett, Ashes winner in Australia; − raised funds for the club running into the hundreds of thousands and helped build a new pavilion. Chris has an incredible work ethic and his list of contacts for getting things done, ability to resource whatever is needed, insistence on getting value for money and to desire to see the club prosper has been incredible." TONY WHARTON: "Tony has worked tirelessly for both the club and local cricket in general over the last 30 plus years. Having previously played for Langley Manor and New Milton, Tony joined Lymington from Trojans in 1986. Since then he has played for all four Saturday sides and still turns out for the occasional friendly fixture. More importantly though has been his overall contribution to the Club having served as both Chairman and Treasurer, a role he still carries out. He has also been ever present helping and coaching our young cricketers and on a Saturday has been first team manager and scorer. He helps with the bar and carries out any other necessary club duties. He was made a life member of the club in 2014, a much-deserved recognition of his service. Over and above his work at Lymington, Tony has been Treasurer of the Southern League and is currently President and former Chairman of South Hampshire Indoor Cricket League and is Vice Chairman of the New Forest Junior Cricket Association. In summary, Tony would be a worthy recipient of this award for his tremendous contribution to local cricket." THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 285 - NOVEMBER 2008 Wednesday 12 November 2008 – Meeting This year’s beneficiary, JOHN CRAWLEY, makes a welcome return to the Society this evening. His first visit was in October 2005 when members enjoyed a most pleasant evening in his company. John Crawley has endeared himself to Hampshire supporters during his seven years with the County. He has reinforced his penchant for making high scores by being the only batsman in the County’s history to record two triple centuries, both at the expense of the Nottinghamshire bowlers. He made 301 not out at Trent Bridge in 2005 and then followed it up with an unbeaten 311 at The Rose Bowl a year later. Virtually all Hampshire supporters felt it was a great pity that Shane Warne declared when our speaker was tantalisingly close to Dick More’s record 316 for the County. When he last spoke to us he felt that the former innings was the best crafted and that, in respect of the latter, the emphasis had to be on winning the match, which Hampshire duly did. Moreover, he made 272 on his Hampshire debut at Canterbury in 2002; he has therefore recorded three of the six highest innings for the County. All three innings are the highest made for Hampshire in the last 70 years – a phenomenal achievement. He might even have made a triple century in the latter innings but was unluckily run out at the non-striker’s end when a Shaun Udal drive was deflected on to the stumps by Min Patel.

THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No 362 – APRIL 2017 MEETINGS Wednesday 5th April 2017 - Meeting The Society is privileged to welcome Darren Bicknell to this evening’s meeting. Members will recall him as being one of county cricket’s most prolific batsmen over a 20-year period - an astonishing timescale in the modern era. Tall (6 feet 4 inches), and left-handed, he usually opened the innings but was equally adept in the middle order. His consistency over such a long period was remarkable, as exemplified by his centuries against Hampshire. He made four in all. His first -105 at The Oval in 1987 - was his maiden hundred in first-class cricket. He compiled his fourth- 103 at Trent Bridge -17 years later, in 2004. Through his ability, and his demeanour, he was also one of the most respected of all county cricketers. When he retired in 2006, Angus Fraser wrote in the following year’s Wisden that “….(he) is a lovely lad – and the best non–Test batsman I ever bowled to. His height allowed him to get over and control the bouncing ball. But for Mike Atherton and Alec Stewart, he would have had plenty of chances”. DARREN JOHN BICKNELL was born in Guildford on 24 June 1967. He made his debut for Surrey in 1987 and was an integral part of the side until 1999. He was capped in 1990. In his early years, he was tipped as a test prospect and went on three England A tours. His first was to Zimbabwe in 1989-90, under the captaincy of Mark Nicholas.

THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 299 - APRIL 2010 MEETING Wednesday 31 March 2010 The Society ends its winter programme by welcoming MATT JOHNS, Environmental Consultant to the Rose Bowl Development Project. Educated at Manchester University and King’s College, London, he manages his own specialist business consultancy, based in Bath, on environmental issues. Given the number of new sports stadia being constructed in the United Kingdom, his address is bound to give a unique insight on a contemporary subject relating to such new building works. COMINGS AND GOINGS Terry Crump’s excellent Rose Bowl Round-Up winter editions, and the Rose Bowl website have given details of the numerous new signings for the forthcoming summer, i.e. Simon Jones, Ajantha Mendis, Shahid Afridi, Kabir Ali, Neil Mackenzie and Abdul Razzaq. There has never been such an influx of high quality players in a close season in Hampshire’s history. CHRIS TREMLETT It is always sad when a player who has graduated through the County’s system goes elsewhere. Chris Tremlett’s case is even more so. It means that in the last twenty years, only Shaun Udal and Adrian Aymes have enjoyed a normal career span in the first team after progressing through Hampshire’s youth system. And, of course, even the former did not quite see out his career with the County. It must be hoped that the hugely talented Liam Dawson, James Vince and Hamza Riazuddin of the current crop of youngsters are able to become first-team regulars in the future and remain with the County, at least for the most productive stages of their careers.

ANY CORRESPONDENCE REGARDING 'OVAL WORLD' SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO MARCUS HOOK AT FLAT 1, 67 BIRDHURST RISE, SOUTH CROYDON, SURREY, CR2 7EJ or E-MAIL [email protected] FIRST INNINGS - THE HOLY GRAIL by Marcus Hook Surrey may only be two matches into the new season, however it's already clear that climbing out of Division Two of the County Championship will be far from easy. The alliance of the number one batsman in the world, a resurgent Steven Davies and the new found consistency of Rory Burns, sees Surrey's batting in fine fettle. But whereas batsmen (especially those capable of saving a match) are worth their weight in gold in Division One, the best guarantee of promotion in Division Two is bowling sides out twice. Surrey have taken twenty wickets in just ten of their last 47 championship matches. The Essex game underlined that without an overseas fast bowler, experienced England qualified bowlers or both, the holy grail of 20 wickets will be hard to come by; and even harder on surfaces such as the one Glamorgan served up for Surrey's championship curtain-raiser. Given that you need to win a fair proportion of your matches to finish in the top two of the second division, playing on spicy 'result' pitches is a definite advantage. It's a difficult one because if Surrey see themselves challenging for the championship title in a few years time, taking cheap wickets on helpful surfaces will not prepare the likes of Tom Curran and Matt Dunn for bowling to the best batsmen in the country.

THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 287 - JANUARY 2009 MEETINGS Wednesday 7 January 2009 – Meeting The Society is pleased to welcome two former Hampshire favourites for a second time this evening. Bob Herman and Richard Lewis first addressed the Society in January 2001 at Portsmouth Rugby Club, giving their audience a splendidly entertaining and memorable evening. It was an occasion spiced with reminiscence and good humour, and left the feeling that they had only touched the tip of the iceberg with their fund of stories. Our speakers have been friends for well over forty years. They first encountered each other in schoolboy county cricket in 1961. That rivalry then extended to 2nd XI matches before they played together for Hampshire, Trojans and Dorset. Bob Herman was Best Man at Richard Lewis’ wedding and then assisted the latter with Easter coaching at Charterhouse School. ROBERT STEPHEN HERMAN was born in Southampton on 30 November 1946, but made his first-class debut for Middlesex in 1965. He looked to have established his place two years later when he took 68 wickets (avge. 25.97). However, though capped in 1969, he made only intermittent appearances thereafter. He did, though, leave a mark against Hampshire in 1967 when he bowled Bob Cottam with the last ball of the match at Portsmouth to ensure the County Championship’s first tie in eight years. (This match was described in some detail in Newsletter 214). He joined Hampshire – his father’s old County – for the 1972 season and immediately put his trials and tribulations with Middlesex behind him.
