List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". A avaliação zoométrica desses animais em comparação a raças definidas pode predizer características herdadas ao longo de gerações. No presente experimento foram realizadas avaliações zoométricas (30 equinos de cada grupo) comparadas entre raças definidas Quarto-de- Milha (QM) e Mangalarga Marchador (ML) com equinos sem raça definida (ESR) de pequenos produtores rurais da região de Araçatuba, SP. Objetivou-se conhecer a morfologia das éguas do grupo ESR, possibilitando orientação futura dos acasalamentos genéticos, com a finalidade de tornar os produtos adaptados à função desejada. Os dados foram agrupados e expressos como média e desvio padrão da média. Para algumas variáveis como peso, perímetro torácico e largura de anca; os animais oriundos do grupo ESR, apresentaram menores comprimentos (P<0,05) quando comparados aos animais QM e ML. Foi calculado o índice Corporal (IC) e de Conformação (ICF), objetivando determinar a aptidão do animal. As éguas do grupo ESR indicaram serem animais médio-líneos e apresentaram menores (P<0,05) índices de conformação (1,98 ± 0,24) comparados aos animais do grupo QM (2,30 ± 0,12) e ML (2,17 ± 0,17) demonstrando não enquadramento à conformação deste grupo às funcionalidades de sela ou tração. -

Eighteen linear measurements were collected from 498 adult horses belonging to several different breeds, including Pantaneira (n = 52), Arabic (n = 28), Crioulo (n = 31), Mangalarga (n = 8), Quarter Horse (n = 97), Petiço (n = 9), Crossbred Horses (i.e., undetermined breeding; n = 170), and Mules (n = 74). These measurements were compared to similar measurements taken of English Thoroughbreds (n = 14) and Brazilian Equestrians (n = 15) in the city of Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grasso do Sul. -

Objective: To investigate the association of testis traits, total number of spermatozoa, and testosterone with fertility of Mangalarga Marchador breed stallions. Methods: The traits measured were testicular length, width and height, right and left testicular volume and total testicular volume. We also evaluated the total number of spermatozoa (TNS), serum testosterone concentration and fertility of stallions (by embryo recovery from donor mares) in the breeding and non-breeding seasons during 1 year. Analysis of variance was performed to verify the effects of age category (AC; young/adult) and reproductive season on the traits. Correlations and repeatability of the traits were also calculated. Results: The AC did not influence testis traits (p>0.05). Reproduction season affected left testicular length, left testicular height, right testicular width and height (p<0.05). -

ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the demographic and biometric changes in registered animals of the Mangalarga breed over the decades. Information from 206,428 Mangalarga horses born between 1930 and 2018 extracted from the genealogic registry system of the Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Cavalos da Raça Mangalarga was employed. The data referred to sex, birth date, fur coat, breeding site location, score achieved at genealogic registration, and three body measurements. Height at withers and the thoracic and cannon bone circumferences were used to calculate five morphometric indices. Results were submitted to analysis of variance using a completely randomized split-plot design where the plots comprised the sexes and the split-plots comprised the decades of selection. Between 1930 and 1990, genealogic registrations progressively increased, particularly in the 1970s and 80s, when the herd experienced the highest growth rate. In 2018, Mangalarga breeding sites were reported in 23 Brazilian states and the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Bahia held the largest herds. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Evaluation of a new variant in the aggrecan gene potentially associated with chondrodysplastic dwarfsm in Miniature horses Danilo Giorgi Abranches de Andrade1, Roberta Martins Basso1, Angelo José Magro2,3, Renée Laufer‑Amorim1, Alexandre Secorun Borges1 & José Paes de Oliveira‑Filho1* Chondrodysplastic dwarfsm in Miniature horses is an autosomal recessive disorder previously associated with four mutations (D1, D2, D3*, and D4) in the aggrecan (ACAN) gene. The aim of this study was to identify additional variants in the candidate ACAN gene associated with chondrodysplastic dwarfsm in Miniature horses. Fifteen dwarf Miniature horses were found to possess only one of the dwarfsm‑causing variants, and two possessed none of the variants. The ACAN exons (EquCab3.0) of seven dwarf Miniature horses were sequenced. A missense SNP in coding exon 11 (g.95271115A > T, c.6465A > T—RefSeq XM_005602799.2), which resulted in the amino acid substitution p.Leu2155Phe (RefSeq XP_005602856.2), was initially associated with the dwarf phenotype. The variant was tested and found present in 14 dwarf foals as well as one parent of each, and both parents of a dwarf possessing two copies. Genetic testing of 347 phenotypically normal Miniature horses demonstrated that none had more than one of the dwarf alleles or c.6465A > T. However, a study of large breeds revealed the presence of c.6465A > T, which was present in homozygosis in two Mangalarga Marchador horses. We suggest that c.6465A > T as a marker of disequilibrium or complex interactions in the Miniature horse genome could contribute to the associated dwarfsm. Chondrodysplastic dwarfsm is a genetic disorder that leads to a disproportionate reduction in body size and may negatively interfere with the development and reproduction of the afected individual 1.
