She is a member in the pedagogical team of the master programs “gender studies” and “Applied Linguistics.” She is a member at the (IDDRL) research laboratory in Beni Mellal faculty. She is a member in The Gest Project funded by Erasmus+ entitled: A step for Democracy and Peace in EU-neighbouring countries with different traditions. She has been publishing articles and participating in National and International conferences. Her fields of Interest are: Communication, Media, Pedagogical Teaching, Methodology of Research, Computing Science & ICTs. Dr. Cherki Karkaba is a senior lecturer (Professor) at Sultan Moulay Slimane University in Beni Mellal, Morocco. He worked as the head of International relations for the university between 2010 and 2016. He also worked as a vice dean and as head of the department of English Studies at the faculty of Arts and Humanities. He has worked for the University of Brest (France) and the University of Swansea (GB) for a few years. He has also been a visiting lecturer in the University of Toulon, France. He is the co-founder and co-editor of Middle Ground: International Journal of Literary and Cultural Encounters. He has been publishing articles and organising conferences related to the issue of otherness. Dr. Farida MOKHTARI is a Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies in the Department of English studies at Moulay Slimane University, Beni Mellal, Morocco. She has a Doctorate in English Literature from the University of Paris Vlll-Vincennes-Saint Denis, France. She is a member of in the Master programs of “Studies in Literature and Cultural Encounters” and “Master of Gender Studies”. She teaches different courses including Introduction to Literature, Novel, Women’s Writings, among others. She is a permanent member at the (IDDRL) research laboratory-Faculty of Letters Beni Mellal. She is a member of the Erasmus+ Gest Project: Gender Studies Curriculum: A Step for Democracy and Peace in EU –Neighbouring Counties with Different Traditions (GeSt) Funded by Erasmus+ for the period between 2015-2019. She participated in different cultural activities with different papers in Fes, Beni Mellal and elsewhere. She has to her credit several articles published in national and international journals and conference proceedings on issues related to: Women’s Development, ICTs in Education, Literary Studies, Cultural Studies and gender studies. Dr. Lalla Meriem Ouahidi has been teaching English in Moulay Slimane University since 2004, and has obtained a Doctorate in 2OO4 on Cultures in contact. Her doctoral dissertation investigates semiotic and sociolinguistic analysis of Moroccan TV advertising. She is the coordinator of the “Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching” Master Program. She is also a member of the following Master programs: ‘Gender Studies’ and ‘Studies in Literary and Cultural Encounters’. Additionally, she is in charge of lectures, seminars, and PhD supervision. Her research interests are conducted in such areas as Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching and Gender studies. She participated in many conferences in Morocco and elsewhere and helped organize a number of study days and conferences. She also published a number of articles, mainly related to English Language Teaching. Dr. Hayat Naciri is an associate professor at the department of English Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Sultan Moulay Slimane University, Beni Mellal, Morocco. She holds a Doctorate in Gender Studies and Linguistics. She is a member in the Diversity and Development Research Laboratory (IDDL). She is a member in the pedagogical team of the Master Program in Gender Studies. She has published articles in different national and international academic journals and conference proceedings. She has been participating in the organization of international conferences and study days. Her fields of interest are gender studies, applied linguistics, language teaching, and ICTs. She is currently the Local Coordinator of GeSt project funded by Erasmus+ entitled: A step for Democracy and Peace in EU- neighbouring countries with different traditions. Dr. Hamid Masfour holds a Doctorate in Literary, cultural and Critical studies. He is a Professor at the department of English Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Sultan Moulay Slimane University, Beni Mellal, Morocco. He teaches different courses on literature and cultural studies such as Cultural theory, Introduction to Literature and Readings in culture. He is a full member in the Interdisciplinarity, Diversity and Development Laboratory (IDDRL). He is a member in the pedagogical team of the Master Program in Gender Studies where he teaches Anglo-American Women’s Writing, Feminist Literary Criticism and Gender in the Digital World. He has published several articles in different national and international academic journals and conference proceedings. He has been participating and helping in the organization of different local, national and international conferences and study days. His fields of research interests are Gender, Women's Writing and Postcolonial Studies, besides Cultural and Critical theories. Dr. Mustapha Fagroud is a Senior professor of Statistics and Computer Science at the School of Agriculture, Meknes, Morocco since 1993. He is an engineer in Agronomy from “L'institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire, Hassan II, Rabat and the university of Gembloux, Belgium (1990). His specialty is Biometry (Applied Statistics & Computing). He holds a Doctorate in "Geostatistics and its applications in Agriculture"(2001) from the university of Gent, Belgium. He has been a visiting lecturer and a member in the pedagogical team of different Master Programs in different universities in Morocco, namely USMS in Beni Mellal, UMI in Meknes, USMBA in Fes, UM5 in Rabat, UIT in Kenitra, UCD in El Jadida, and UMP in Oujda. He is a trainer and counsellor to "AUF" working on themes in relation with ICTs, e-learning, MOOC and pedagogy at the university. He is a coordinator and a member of many international cooperation projects (France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Egypt, Madagascar, and Tunisia).     DATELINE Is Morocco Immune to Upheaval? by Bruce Maddy-Weitzman The uprisings that swept across the Middle East and North Africa during 2011 have largely bypassed Morocco. The absence of tumult and the loudly trumpeted package of constitutional reform measures endorsed in a July 2011 national referendum1 further strengthened Morocco’s favorable image in the West as a country that has mixed tradi- tion with modernity and an openness to foreign cultures, and which is both politically stable and steadily evolving toward greater pluralism. Morocco’s success in having thus far dodged upheaval warrants explanation, for the country suffers from many of the same underlying ills that have driven the protests elsewhere—corruption, poverty, and unemployment; the overwhelming concentration of wealth in the hands of a small stratum of elite families intertwined with the authorities;2 the absence of real democracy; and closed horizons for its large, youthful population, suffering from disproportionately high rates of unemployment and underemployment. But Morocco’s starting point, in terms of its political institutions and political culture, is different in ways that provide some comparative advantages. Moreover, unlike other Middle East, autocratic regimes during this tumultuous year of popular intifadas,3 the Moroccan authorities, led by King Mohammed VI, have been sufficiently proactive in their responses to the rumblings from below so as to render them manageable, at least for the time being. the country’s deeper currents, reveals the extent MOROCCAN

    Colonial and Orientalist Veils: Associations of Islamic Female Dress in the French and Moroccan Press and Politics Loubna Bijdiguen Goldmiths College – University of London Thesis Submitted for a PhD in Media and Communications Abstract The veiled Muslimah or Muslim woman has figured as a threat in media during the past few years, especially with the increasing visibility of religious practices in both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority contexts. Islamic dress has further become a means and technique of constructing ideas about the ‘other’. My study explores how the veil comes to embody this otherness in the contemporary print media and politics. It is an attempt to question constructions of the veil by showing how they repeat older colonial and Orientalist histories. I compare and contrast representations of the dress in Morocco and France. This research is about how Muslimat, and more particularly their Islamic attire, is portrayed in the contemporary print media and politics. My research aims to explore constructions of the dress in the contemporary Moroccan and French press and politics, and how the veil comes to acquire meanings, or veil associations, over time. I consider the veil in Orientalist, postcolonial, Muslim and Islamic feminist contexts, and constructions of the veil in Orientalist and Arab Nahda texts. I also examine Islamic dress in contemporary Moroccan and French print media and politics. While I focus on similarities and continuities, I also highlight differences in constructions of the veil. My study establishes the importance of merging and comparing histories, social contexts and geographies, and offers an opportunity to read the veil from a multivocal, multilingual, cross-historical perspective, in order to reconsider discourses of Islamic dress past and present in comparative perspective.

    Moroccan associationism in ethnical and sexual vindications: women and feminisms, Amazighs and social visibility1 Yolanda Aixelà Universitat d’Alacant Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show the vitality of Moroccan associationism in two identity vindications - sexual (women) and ethnical (Amazigh). These vindications have clearly materialized in the politics of the State at the beginning of the 21st century: women obtained a Family Code reform and the Amazighs some measures aimed at protecting their culture. Keywords: associationism, women, feminism, Amazigh, Morocco. Introduction In Moroccan society, as in other Maghreb countries, there have been areas where associative movements concerning sexual (women) and ethnical (Amazigh) identity have appeared and crystallized, especially after the arrival of colonial Independence. The objective of this paper is to describe the vitality and dynamism of this country and also to analyze how the collective vindications have materialized politically in the Moroccan State. In the case of women, they used the associations to favour their legal vindications (Daoud 1993). The difference in opinion regarding the changes to be made in the law during the 80s and 90s, and the coverage given by the mass media openly siding with one option or the other, propitiated the appearance of two kinds of feminism: Islamicizing feminism and emancipatory feminism. While Dr. Monjib has been targeted repeatedly over the years for his peaceful activities promoting human rights in Morocco, government efforts at intimidation have intensified in recent weeks: he has been subjected to persistent monitoring and surveillance, and attempts to defame him publicly, while members of his family have themselves been badgered by the authorities. We call upon the Moroccan government to put an immediate stop to this baseless campaign against Maati Monjib, and allow him to focus on his scholarship and civic activities undisturbed. MESA was founded in 1966 to promote scholarship and teaching on the Middle East and North Africa. The preeminent organization in the field, the Association publishes the International Journal of Middle East Studies and has over 2800 members worldwide. MESA is committed to ensuring academic freedom and freedom of expression, both within the region and in connection with the study of the region in North America and elsewhere.
