That’s why we have the First Amendment Fund.” That didn’t happen yet but it surely will. As part of the next budget negotiation, Trump will say in his best Jimmy Cagney (Mr. Roberts) tone: “I want that station out of here.” I predicted that an internet troll would be discovered writing to WAMC under various assumed names and we would be amazed when we figured out who it was. We never thought it would be a former staff member. I predicted that Murray the Dog would be honored by the ASPCA. His citation would read, “Murray has brought honor to dogs everywhere.” It’s coming, I tell you, it’s coming. I predicted that two WAMC staff members would fall in Every year, I offer my fearless predictions for the coming love. Attorney Jeff Honeywell would be consulted as to months. Jarl Mohn, that it will happen. It is always your job to try to figure out the currently on-leave head man will resign because of which is which. This year I will look back on last year’s continuing health problems. His resignation will be met remarkable predictions to see how we did. It didn’t happen and it won’t happen again this year. I predicted that the right side of the David A. Galletly newsroom would feature a sign that reads, “The Right (Continued on next page) Side.” That sign is still in preparation, overseen by a com- mittee of Brian Shields and Ray Graf. As we write this, they are deeply involved in the project. 2 WAMC PROGRAM GUIDE JANUARY 2019 3 PROGRAM NOTES PATRICK GARRETT This year at WAMC, like many years before, we start off the New Year on January 1st with a list of special program- ming. Starting at midnight, it’s Toast of the Nation. An NPR tradition every New Year's Eve since the 1970s, a festive jazz party, all night long. Spirited, improvised, and swinging, each segment stops in a Blue Note venue throughout the country and the world! We’ll hear sets from Buika, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Joshua Redman and Brad Meldau, pianist Fred Hersch, Ron Carter, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. At 9 a.m. WAMC will broadcast Fire and Water: A Year of Climate Conversations. The special will focus on how the conversations over the past year have changed. From fire and flood to hurricanes and hot temperatures, 2018 put climate on the front page. But progress still seemed to be able to find a way. Immediately after, a special from the BBC on Childish Gambino’s “This is America.” This is 2018 examines the global impact of the video and those who made their own versions of Gambino’s song/video and why certain issues resonate in their respective countries. Before we rejoin for Midday Magazine at noon, we’ll hear from Paul Ingles in a special created to honor the musicians that died this past year. From Aretha Franklin and Dolores O’Riordan to Mac Miller and Avicii, Ingles dives into the impact these musicians made through their careers. At 2 p.m. hear the Capitol Steps in a New Year’s edition of their political satire featuring songs from their latest album, Make America Grin Again. Now is the chance to finally enjoy the headlines you were too scared to read. The Met Opera continues its Saturday matinee broadcasts during the winter month. We kick off the month with Verdi’s Otello on January 5th, we continue with a new production of Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur on January 12th, then on January 19th Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, and end the month with a Met Premiere of Muhly’s Marnie on January 26th. All broadcasts in January begin at 1 p.m. FROM ALAN (CONTINUED) I predicted that the Mayor of Albany would finally do something about the prostitution problem on Central Avenue. The pimps who follow the women around are truly scary. Still true, still hoping. I predicted that WAMC would receive an award for being the most diverse broadcaster in our area. Should happen any day now. I predicted that the police would finally patrol the bus station out in front of AMCW where loitering, smoking (not al- lowed), urination and fights are not all that uncommon. This HAS happened and the bus stop has been cleaned up. I predicted that a listener would make a false accusation about having heard a dirty word on the radio. Not much of a predication. I predicted that the WAMC Jeep would use its built-in winch to save the occupants of a car that drove off the road.
