20 Ticks, Mites, Mold, Fungi
CHAPTER 20 THE BEST CONTROL FOR TICKS, MITES, MOLD AND FUNGI 859 Developmental Stages of the American Dog Tick Ticks are bloodsucking parasites that are often found in tall grass and brush. There are more than 850 species of ticks worldwide, at least 100 can and do transmit more than 65 diseases. For photographs and Quick Time movies of several tick species click on the tick image gallery at: http://www.ent.iastate.edu/imagegal/ticks/. Many tick-borne diseases often go undiagnosed because they mimic Lyme disease and its flu-like symptoms. They include: babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, tularemia and ehrlichiosis. It is very likely that a person can be bitten once and become infected with more than one agent. Ticks are literally living cesspools that suck blood and diseases from a variety of animals before they finally die. The tick’s mouthparts are designed for sucking blood and holding on to the host at the same time. Most ticks prefer to feed on animals, but when they are hungry and you walk by, watch out. The two common ticks in the U.S.A. are the Lone Star Tick and the American Dog Tick. An estimated 1% of tick populations can carry Colorado tick fever or Rocky Mountain spotted fever (primarily in the western and eastern U. S.) Ticks can be found in the woods, lawns, meadows, shrubs, weeds, caves, homes and cabins. Wear medicated body powder or food-grade DE mixed in menthol or diluted geranium oil and/or Safe Solutions Insect Repellent to try to repel them. -
Survival & Lila Downs
NavaBello1 Jennifer Nava Bello English 122/Section Miss French February 21, 2011 Powerful Music: Survival & Lila Downs The banquet hall was filled with the deafening chatter of excited Latinos. The opening act began to play traditional Cumbia, which is a Latin style genre “played on drums, flutes and percussion instruments of African and indigenous origins” (Mauleon). As the music began filling the hot air with deafening sounds of crash symbols and singing Latinos, my mouth filled with distaste. Young teenage girls began to dance in front of a small stage. I rolled my eyes, the music was awful. I sat close to my husband and wondered how he was able to drag me to this event. Little did I know, this event would become a significant turning point in my life. Finally, the opening band performed their last song and my ears felt relief. As we took our seats on icy metal chairs, I watched as the young teenage girls and their families took their seats with an intense amount of anticipation. They stared at the empty stage like giddy school children. We were part of a Quinceanera that was open to the paying public. The Quinceanera, a party for a young Latina girl turning fifteen, was a dual event featuring a concert performed by Lila Downs. I knew nothing of her, until the woman sitting next to me informed me that Lila Downs performed in Frida, a motion picture about the life of Frida Kahlo. Who is Frida Kahlo? I thought to myself. I focused my attention on the decorative shawl wrapped around this odd woman. -

A PEDAGOGICAL GUIDE to EXTENDED PIANO TECHNIQUES a Mono
A PEDAGOGICAL GUIDE TO EXTENDED PIANO TECHNIQUES ________________________________________________________________________ A Monograph Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board ________________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS ________________________________________________________________________ by Jean-François Proulx May, 2009 © Copyright 2009 by Jean-François Proulx ii ABSTRACT A PEDAGOGICAL GUIDE TO EXTENDED PIANO TECHNIQUES Jean-François Proulx Doctor of Musical Arts Temple University, 2009 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Charles Abramovic Extended piano techniques, which mainly involve playing directly on the internal components of the piano, emerged early in the twentieth century, mainly in the United States. Henry Cowell (1897-1965) explored some of these techniques in short piano pieces such as The Tides of Manaunaun (1917; clusters) The Banshee (1925; glissando, pizzicato) and Sinister Resonance (1930; mute, harmonic). Several contemporary composers followed this path. Notably, George Crumb’s (b. 1929) mature works combine conventional techniques with an unprecedented variety of extended techniques, including vocal and percussive effects. Although extended techniques are no longer a novelty, most pianists are still unfamiliar with them. Extended piano works are rarely performed or taught. This situation is regrettable considering the quality of these compositions, and the great potential of extended techniques to expand the piano’s coloristic resources. A Pedagogical Guide to Extended Piano Techniques is designed to help pianists learn this idiom and achieve fluency. Teachers may also find it useful in planning courses at the undergraduate college level. Chapters 1 and 2 provide general information such as the development and classification of unconventional techniques, and the construction of the grand piano. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 form the core of the monograph.
