  • SCIENTOLOGY: from Science Fiction to Space-Age Religion
STATEMENT DS-170 SCIENTOLOGY: From Science Fiction to Space-Age Religion by John Weldon Summary The Church of Scientology is a controversial new religion developed by L. Ron Hubbard as an extension of his earlier psychological theories of Dianetics. Drawing on ideas from Buddhist and Hindu religious philosophy, science fiction, and Western concepts in psychology and science, L. Ron Hubbard produced a religion that sees all human beings as immortal spirits (thetans) who have forgotten their identity and become deceived by the very universe they mentally emanated in order to amuse themselves. Scientology claims it can free the thetan to realize his or her true nature and powers through certain controversial procedures that allegedly heal the mind and free the spirit. Although the church claims its beliefs are not incompatible with Christian faith, an evaluation of what Scientology teaches in the areas of God, man, the creation, salvation, and death proves this is not so. Scientology is a powerful new religion whose teachings are inconsistent with the beliefs of orthodox Christian faith. Ours is an age of religious cacophony, as was the Roman Empire of Christ's time. From agnosticism to Hegelianism, from devil-worship to scientific rationalism, from theosophical cults to philosophies of process: virtually any world view conceivable is offered to modern man in the pluralistic marketplace of ideas. Our age is indeed in ideological and societal agony, grasping at anything and everything that can conceivably offer the ecstasy of a cosmic relationship or of a comprehensive Weltanschauung [world view]. — John Warwick Montgomery.1 One of the most intriguing and controversial items found in today's religious marketplace is The Church of Scientology.

Library holdings 1 Marburg Journal of Religion: Volume 4, No. 1 (July 1999) Introduction No New Religious Movement has been a subject of more public interest and of more heated discussions in Germany during the last two decades than Scientology. I first became interested in this debate in the early Eighties, but only in 1996/1997 - after completing a similar project about Theosophy and Helena Blavatsky - I seriously started to search for available material on Hubbard and the movement he founded. Only then I became aware of the rather paradoxical situation in Germany, that there exists a large New Religious Movement (whose status as a religion nevertheless is doubted by some) which is being discussed on German TV almost every week, which forms a topic of forensic debate in many legal proceedings, and which is the one movement treated most extensively in the official report on New Religious Movements published by the German parliament (Endbericht der Enquete-Kommission des Deutschen Bundestages "Sogenannte Sekten und Psychogruppen", 1998) - but nevertheless has almost never been treated on an academic level of research.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody
8 Bohemian Rhapsody aul Haggis and Deborah Rennard married in 1997, soon after Paul’s divorce from Diane became nal. Paul was still seeking joint custody of his three daughters. Without Pconsulting him, Diane had taken Lauren and Katy out of the Delphi Academy, apparently intending to enroll them in public school. Paul and Diane were ordered by the court to undergo psychiatric evaluation, a procedure that Scientology abhors. In December 1998, the court surprised everyone by awarding Paul full custody of his daughters. According to court records, the ruling followed the discovery that the girls were not enrolled in school at all. The girls were stunned. They had watched the hostilities through Diane’s eyes. No one had prepared them for the possibility that they might be taken from her—until then, it had been the three girls and their mother against the world. The girls thought the decision was unbalanced and unfairly inuenced by the fact that their father had more money. Alissa vowed she would never speak to him again. Haggis was also caught short by the court’s decision. In addition to the year-old son, James, he had with Deborah, he suddenly had two teenage daughters on his hands as well. (Alissa was twenty-one at the time, and lived on her own.) The girls felt uprooted and they missed the emotional support of their mother. They didn’t resent Deborah; actually, they appreciated her advocacy and the way she balanced out Paul. Still, it was a difficult adjustment for everyone. Paul put the girls in a private school, but that lasted only six months.

  • (18/27): Scientology
Scientology - LIGHT OF THE GREAT FIRE 6/9/14 6:20:46 PM The Light Of The Great Fire In 1976, the First Printing of Modern Management Technology defined (otherwise known as the Admin Dictionary) carries a definition for "cross" that quotes FO 3350 as explaining it. The phrase "light of the Great Fire" is in the definition. (FO equals Flag Order a type of Sea Organization issue) The text said to come from this FO is as follows: Cross, the symbol of the cross has been widely used in symbolic tradition, and with many interpretations given to it. The many forms of the word "cross" itself, however, traditionally are said to derive from (come from) a basic root word meaning "light of the Great Fire." The distinctive cross of the Church of Scientology is symbolic because of its eight points, of the eight dynamics. Above the shield of the Sea Org coat of arms, it not only symbolizes the Sea Org members devotion to the aims of the Church of Scientology, but also his commitment to the greatest good for the greatest number of dynamics. The cross's position above the shield also indicates that Sea Org is a religious fraternity within the formalized structure of the Churches of Scientology. (FO 3350) Further: FO 3350 24 June 1973 is titled "Confidential" as per Modern Management Technology Defined, first printing. (Modern Management Technology has an index of types of issues, the one for Flag Orders lists the number, then the title, then the date – and in the title column it has “Confidential”, which means if there is a title, it isn’t listed.) The definition of "cross" above talks about the cross's use over the Sea Org coat of Arms, but the FO covering the Sea Org coat of arms is FO 3351, which is numbered later, and dated EARLIER as 20 June 1973.

  • L. Ron Hubbard Guide to the Dictionary
Technical Dictionary of Dianetics and Scientology by L. Ron Hubbard Guide to the Dictionary This is the long awaited and much heralded Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary. It contains and defines almost all of the words and abbreviations used in connection with auditing technology and with the training of auditors to date in Dianetics and Scientology. Many words have several definitions taken from various periods of the development of Dianetics and Scientology. A large amount of L. Ron Hubbard’s books, tape lectures, articles and technical bulletins etc. were researched for many years by a team of researchers. The period from 1950 to 1975 was heavily consulted for the terms and their definitions. The student can readily see the progressive development through time of the vocabulary of Dianetics and Scientology by its Source and Founder, L. Ron Hubbard as well as the changes that have come about through his continued research. More important however, is the fact that all of the materials of the subjects remain valid and in force today. In compiling this dictionary the researchers and editors have chosen to omit the conventional use of the ellipsis (. .) which would indicate an intentional omission of words in the definition. This is so that each definition imparts a complete uninterrupted thought to the reader and allows him to form a concept of the word without distraction or the inclusion of data not contributory to the definition. The references at the end of each definition allow the reader to consult the Source of the definition if further information is desired. In addition to giving an understanding of the vocabulary of the subjects and clearing up misunderstood words and abbreviations in connection with Dianetics and Scientology, there is a further major use for this dictionary; The student requiring information about any area of Dianetics or Scientology need only look up the words connected with that area and he will be provided with references to appropriate material for further study of that area.
