Cultural properties, whether tangible or intangible, represent both the essence and the basis of national cultures. Both the Philippines and South Korea's cultural heritages have survived various unfortunate chapters of their long histories. This study's purpose is to explore and evaluate the phenomenon of the architecture of Hahoe village in Andong city, Korea and Vigan city of Ilocos Sur, Philippines and to understand and cherish the cultural heritage of both countries. The historic city of Vigan has a unique architecture that blend Ilocano, Filipino, Chinese and Spanish styles in a tropical Asian setting, with a typical Spanish colonial urban layout as specified by the Ley Delas Indias. Hahoe village also represents a masterpiece of human creation and exhibit an important interchange of human values in architecture, monumental arts, town planning and landscape design. The Republic of Korea is a sovereign state in East Asia, in the southern part of the .Korean Peninsula. South Koreans lead a distinctive urban lifestyle, as half of them live in high-rises concentrated in the Seoul Capital Area with 25 million residents. The capital Seoul is the world's 16th largest global city with the fifth largest economy and is the seventh most sustainable city in the world. South Korea, along with Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong (China) is one of the four high-tech industrialized developed countries often referred to as the Four Asian Economic Dragons. South Korea is a technologically advanced developed country and, globally, it ranks highly in personal safety, job security, ease of doing business and healthcare quality, with the world's third highest health adjusted life expectancy and fourth most efficient healthcare system. You can see marvelous mountains on the way from Incheon airport to Seoul. They are not high, but green, densely covered with trees. That is a little differing from rocky mountains in Uzbekistan, the tops of which may be covered with snow even in early summer. I knew a lot about this small country in the south of Asia before going on our business trip. This time I shall tell you about some facts that may give you some picture of this beautiful, surprising country which attracts a lot of tourists as a small wonder.

Language In Korea, the official and spoken language is Korean. The discussions on whether it is a part of Ural-Altaic languages (in which Turkish also takes place) and whether it has a relevance to Japanese still continues. Nevertheless, Korean is accepted as an isolated language that owns its own language family. While Chinese alphabet Hanja had been used to write in Korean until 15th century, after King Sejong (1418-1450) it has been revised an alphabet called Hangeul to make reading & writing easier. Today, both alphabets are taught at schools. Religion All religions in Korea are under the constitutional protection. According to the research held in the country, where diverse religions are practiced in peace and mutual respect, in 2007*; 46% of the total population has no religional affiliation. For the rest, 29% is Christian (18% Protestant), 23% is Buddhist, and 1% is Shamanist. And also there is a small amount of people practicing Islam. Sanctuaries of every religion, fused in Korean traditions, are appealing touristic places with their highly aesthetic architectures. Traditional Housing A traditional Korean house is called a hanok. A hanok creates a living space based on the coexistence of man and nature.

  • South Korea – 2016
    South Korea { 2016 This year the annual conference I usually go to, ISMD (International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics) was on Jeju Island, South Korea. After some grumbling about the high travel cost, it was agreed that I could go. After some searching I found the cheapest flights to be flying from Amsterdam to Seoul and returning from Osaka, Japan, unfortunately not by a direct flight but with a transfer in Paris. Then started intensive planning of sightseeing in Korea before the conference and Japan after. I discovered that there is now a Michelin Green Guide for South Korea and also one for Japan. They were, together with intensive Googling, very helpful in planning the trip. Wednesday, 17 August. At Schiphol it seemed as though no one was flying. There were almost no lines at security or at passport control. Perhaps it was due to the lateness of the flight, which was scheduled to depart, and in fact did depart, at 21:35. The plane left from the far end of the E-pier, which was nice in that it gave you a bit of movement before being cooped up in a full 747 for 10 hours. I had checked a suitcase and hence had only a small carry-on. So I didn't have to worry about boarding early enough to be sure of finding room in an overhead bin. Thursday, 18 August. We landed a few minutes ahead of the scheduled 14:40, at the end of a very long pier. Walking the length of the pier only got you to an underground tram, which brought you to another building.
