Around Ozma's throne, on such occasions, are grouped all the important personages of Oz, such as the Scarecrow, Jack Pumpkinhead, Tiktok the Clockwork Man, the Tin Woodman, the Wizard of Oz, the Shaggy Man and other famous fairy people. Little Dorothy usually has a seat at Ozma's feet, and crouched on either side the throne are two enormous beasts known as the Hungry Tiger and the Cowardly Lion. These two beasts are Ozma's chief guardians, but as everyone loves the beautiful girl Princess there has never been any disturbance in the great Throne Room, or anything for the guardians to do but look fierce and solemn and keep quiet until the Royal Audience is over and the people go away to their homes. Of course no one would dare be naughty while the huge Lion and Tiger crouched beside the throne; but the fact is, the people of Oz are very seldom naughty. -

EPISODE TWO 15 PREVIOUSLY Recap of the previous episode. 16 EXT. CLEARING The Sawhorse runs rampant, while Tip and Jack Pumpkinhead attempt to catch it and calm it down. JACK PUMPKINHEAD Whoah! Whoah! TIP (V.O.) Taming the Sawhorse now it was alive was proving ... tricky. When Jack came to life, he was full of questions and kinda stupid, but he was fairly calm, all things considered. The Sawhorse was frightened. And a little bit insane. JACK PUMPKINHEAD Calm down horsey! TIP Whoah, horse. Easy there boy -- look out Jack, it's coming through! JACK PUMPKINHEAD Whoooah! He leaps out of the way as the horse bounds past him. TIP Come on, there's nothing to be scared of. JACK PUMPKINHEAD I'm scared! TIP Nothing for the Sawhorse to be scared of. (to Sawhorse) We're your friends we're not going to hurt -- ahhh! He jumps aside as it rushes through. 45. JACK PUMPKINHEAD At least it's knocking you over as well as me, Dad. TIP I don't understand, why won't it listen to us? JACK PUMPKINHEAD Maybe it can't listen to us? TIP Oh? Oh, of course, that's it! Jack, find me some leaves or something. (he starts rummaging in the undergrowth) Big ones, about the size of my hand. We need two. JACK PUMPKINHEAD Why? TIP (finding leaves) Here we are, perfect. Ears, Jack! The Sawhorse doesn't have ears! JACK PUMPKINHEAD That's why he isn't listening! TIP We just need to fasten these on to his head and sprinkle a little more powder on. -

Jinjur rushes down the corridor, out of breath and a little desperate. JINJUR It's down here. It has to be down this way... FARAMANT (afar) She went that way! UGU (afar) Are you sure? FARAMANT (afar) Yes, giddy-up! JINJUR No! Not yet. I won't give up so easily! She pushes against a rock and a secret passage slides aside. She rushes in and it replaces itself as Faramant and Ugu arrive riding the Sawhorse. It whinnies triumphant. FARAMANT Well I thought she went this way. UGU (weary) Can we stop yet? FARAMANT I saw her dash around the corner. UGU I left my stomach somewhere around the atrium. 224. FARAMANT There's nowhere else she could have gone, it's a dead end. UGU Faramant... FARAMANT Yes, climb off if you have to. UGU Thank you! He scampers off and kisses the ground. FARAMANT How did you ever survive living with the Wicked Witch? UGU The Wicked Witch never made me ride a crazy wooden horse without a stop button. FARAMANT She had a dragon! UGU And the Sawhorse is scarier. FARAMANT Right. (he climbs off himself and examines the wall) I don't suppose she went this way.... UGU Through the wall? FARAMANT This is Oz, it's not unheard of. -

The Wizard Behind Oz and Other Stories: A Research Guide for L. Frank Baum By: Karla Lyles October 2006 2 Introduction: In 1900 Lyman Frank Baum published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a phenomenal literary success that inspired posthumous writings to continue the Oz series into more than 40 books (including the originals). Although Baum published several additional series of books (most pseudonymously written) and other individual writings, he is best known for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A considerable number of books, articles, dissertations, and electronic resources containing information about the Oz masterpiece are available, supplying a wealth of information for the curious Baum fan or avid Baum researcher. To locate information about Baum and his writings I consulted several search engines, including ABELL, British Library Catalogue, Copac, DLB, MLAIB, Wilson, and WorldCat, as well as referred to footnotes in printed materials I obtained. I have provided references to the databases I located each of the materials in within the brackets at the end of the citation entries, allowing the reader to consult those databases if he/she so chooses to pursue further research. For those individuals who may be unfamiliar with the acronyms of some of the databases, ABELL is the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, DLB is the Dictionary of Literary Biography, and MLAIB is the MLA International Bibliography. I also relied substantially on the services of Interlibrary Loan to secure materials that are not available in Evans Library at Texas A & M University, and I recommend the use of Interlibrary Loan in conducting research to allow for the acquisition of materials that would otherwise remain unobtainable. -

Chapter 24: How the Tin Woodman Told the Sad News The Tin Woodman received Princess Dorothy’s party with much grace and cordiality, yet the little girl decided that something must be worrying with her old friend, because he was not so merry as usual. But at first she said nothing about this, for Uncle Henry and Aunt Em were fairly bubbling over with admiration for the beautiful tin castle and its polished tin owner. So her suspicion that something unpleasant had happened was for a time forgotten. “Where is the Scarecrow?” she asked, when they had all been ushered into the big tin drawing-room of the castle, the Sawhorse being led around to the tin stable in the rear. “Why, our old friend has just moved into his new mansion,” explained the Tin Woodman. “It has been a long time in building, although my Winkies and many other people from all parts of the country have been busily working upon it. At last, however, it is completed, and the Scarecrow took possession of his new home just two days ago.” “I hadn’t heard that he wanted a home of his own,” said Dorothy. “Why doesn’t he live with Ozma in the Emerald City? He used to, you know; and I thought he was happy there.” “It seems,” said the Tin Woodman, “that our dear Scarecrow cannot be contented with city life, however beautiful his surroundings might be. Originally he was a farmer, for he passed his early life in a cornfield, where he was supposed to frighten away the crows.” “I know,” said Dorothy, nodding. -

Chapter 26: How Ozma Refused to Fight for Her Kingdom Ozma was in her rose garden picking a bouquet when the party arrived, and she greeted all her old and new friends as smilingly and sweetly as ever. Dorothy’s eyes were full of tears as she kissed the lovely Ruler of Oz, and she whispered to her: “Oh, Ozma, Ozma! I’m SO sorry!” Ozma seemed surprised. “Sorry for what, Dorothy?” she asked. “For all your trouble about the Nome King,” was the reply. Ozma laughed with genuine amusement. “Why, that has not troubled me a bit, dear Princess,” she replied. Then, looking around at the sad faces of her friends, she added: “Have you all been worrying about this tunnel?” “We have!” they exclaimed in a chorus. “Well, perhaps it is more serious than I imagined,” admitted the fair Ruler; “but I haven’t given the matter much thought. After dinner we will all meet together and talk it over.” So they went to their rooms and prepared for dinner, and Dorothy dressed herself in her prettiest gown and put on her coronet, for she thought that this might be the last time she would ever appear as a Princess of Oz. The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and Jack Pumpkinhead all sat at the dinner table, although none of them was made so he could eat. Meyer, my mentor during more than a quarter century in Oz. Introduction Founded in 1957 by Justin G. Schiller, The International Wizard of Oz Club brings together thousands of diverse individuals interested in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and this classic’s author, L. Frank Baum. The forty-four volumes of The Baum Bugle to-date play an important rôle for the club and its members. Despite the general excellence of the journal, the lack of annual or cumulative indices, was soon recognized as a hindrance by those pursuing research related to The Wizard of Oz. The late Fred E. Otto (1925-1994) accepted the challenge of creating a Bugle index proposed by Jerry Tobias. With the assistance of Patrick Maund, Peter E. Hanff, and Karin Eads, Fred completed a first edition which included volumes 1 through 28 (1957-1984).
