Organised by The Friends of The Canal Museum Registered charity no. 1121146

Once again on behalf of the Friends of The Canal Museum, the Museum staff and the community of , I am delighted to welcome you to our Village at War weekend - the fourth time the event has been held.

It has taken months of planning, involving a vast number of volunteer hours. But as we do not receive financial assistance of any kind towards its organisation, I am sure, therefore, that you appreciate your donation of £5 helps greatly towards the significant costs incurred. Your donation includes the following attractions:

* Visit to The Canal Museum (normally £4.75 per person) * Tea dance * George Formby tribute concert * l940s sing-along with the ever-popular Lola Lamour * Archive film show * Fashion show * Hurricane display and fly-past

Quite simply, if we are unable to meet our actual costs, it is unlikely an event of this type could be organised again. This indeed would be a great pity.

Pleasingly, the Village at War weekend was judged to be the Best Event in the in the 2010 Renaissance and Heritage Awards competition - an achieve- ment which makes us very proud and is a real spur to our volunteers.

As always, may I ask you to respect the privacy of local residents, be responsible with litter and keep dogs on leads. .

I hope you thoroughly enjoy your visit to Stoke Bruerne and that we shall receive the “all clear” so that we can do it all again next year. Very many sincere thanks for your support.

David Henderson, Chairman of the Village at War organising committee and Manager of The Canal Museum

This 4th Village at War weekend at Stoke Bruerne has been organised by The Friends of The Canal Museum, a registered charity and volunteer group set up in 2006 to sup- port the work of The Canal Museum.

The Canal Museum has existed since 1963. It was founded by two men who worked for the waterways, Charles Hadlow, an engineer and Jack James a boatman, turned lock keep- er. At that time it was the only museum devoted to the inland waterway system in the country. Since then other museums have developed, notably at Gloucester and Elles- mere Port, both of which, together with the Stoke Bruerne Museum are now run and operated by The Waterways Trust, an inde- pendent body. In recent years the Trust has obtained funding from various outside sources but resources are inevitably limited and the Museum does not receive govern- ment funding like other similar museums to enable free entry.

Volunteers and members of the Friends as- sist the Museum in many ways - from fund raising, demonstrating traditional canal craft skills, acting as museum guides, restoring and researching exhibits, giving talks, to helping maintain our historic narrow boat Sculptor.

We always welcome new members, active or not, so why not pick up a membership form from the Museum while you are here. Membership starts from only £10 per year. 29th-30th September 2012 As a local organisation we are vitally inter- ested in maintaining and preserving the her- itage of our waterways system, particularly those relating to Northamptonshire.

If you would like to help conserve this pre- cious heritage for future generations to en- joy, then do consider joining us.

Membership forms are available at the Canal

Museum or from our website at:
