HITS September 14, 1992 43 PE LE ei METHL

Hear me rant! Is Geffen aware that they have a potential monster in Jackyl'? For the past four weeks, I've played "Lumberjack Song" on my show and each time, the phones went berserk. FRIEN D Alan Orman and Warren Christopher are doing a kick-ass job at radio — close to 100 Metal/Album stations! C'mon dudes, push the fuck outta this one! Christ, a rock band with a buzz. D'ya know what that's like these days? The American Bald Eagle is more plentiful! And T O ALL while I'm smokin', where the hell is MTV? "I Stand Alone" demands rotation. There, I've said my piece. Oh yeah, one more thing... Jackyl's maniacal frontman, Jesse Dupree, is the bas- tard son of Jim Dandy and David Lee. Like I said about Chris Cornell two years ago, HE'S A STAR! OK, I'm finished... The other rock band with a buzz, Helmet, is tearing up retail now that it has Buzz Bin fuel. The unsung hero in the brilliant set-up for the Helmet record is In- terscope marketing wiz Steve Berman. Absolutely stellar, Steve... Atco's awesome Electric Boys stopped by personally last week to air their newly produced clip for "Dying To Be Loved," the best ballad I've heard since Lep's "Love Bites." The video cost (no shit) $18.95! The band cut it at Universal Studio's "Star Tracks" booth, and believe me, $100,000 worth of post-production can't match the delightfully raw, hippie-psycho effects of this l000ww-budget beauty. MTV, give this one a play, just for the sake of fiscal responsibility... Budd Carr calls to tell me 'Times They Change" is finally going to radio. The next day. an EMI rep tells me otherwise. What's the deal, fellas? Perhaps this is a metaphor for the overall Slaughter problem... Life, Sex & Death were brilliant on the radio show last Saturday night. Reprise's Linnea Nan and HK's Denny Rosencrantz still can't believe I got Stanley to sing... Two unsigned entities with much talk: Shake The Faith (Clive won't commit) but Atlantic's Jason Rom is very interested; Little Willie, the Danny Zelisko/Doc McGhee prepubescent project that make Bad 4 Good look grey in the temples... Speaking of Interscope's young rockers, "Nineteen" is a killer album track. Every station in the nation should be on this one... The Beauties' "Something About The Pain" box is beautiful in sight and sound. Randy Phillips and Michelle Ozboum have done a great job here. Not to mention the fact the songs are terrific... Priority Rocks debut heavy signing, Siammin' Gladys, somehow talked me and Capt. Adelson into being in their video for the single, "Down On Your Knees." Thanks for the hardhat and boots, dudes. I would've preferred the leading lady, though (just kid- ding, Joyce!)... Next week, Mother Love Bone accord- ing to — who else?... I'm with ya, Bob... Friend out... Lonn & Friend — Will video (or Jani By LONN M. FRIEND Lane) kill the radio star?

Ain't Playin' No "Games"... Ole n IS BACK!!! Chuckii is back — and this ain't no child's play! This is the real deal, as Chuckii Booker returns to the scene with "Games" — a serious smash with a deceivingly play- ful name. The Atlantic man is winning over listeners nationwide with a strikingly smooth sound that devastates the competition. Frankie Darcell, MD at WPEG in Charlotte, NC, is game: "He's real smooth. This record sounds G-R-E-A-T on the radio! A slammin' record!" Over in Portland, OR, Angela Jenkins, PD/MD at KBMS, is placing all bets on Booker: "My audience loves him! Wel- come back, Chuckii!!!" On the retail front, Tommie Langston of Stick Horse Records in Houston, TX is B- I-G on Booker: "This is one of the best albums of the year! It's a mother!" Steve Maida of Mattapan Music in Boston, MA, is a believer: "Booker's latest is smooth with a mid- tempo groove — it's slam- min'!" If you don't think that "Games" is worth playing, you've lost your marbles — literally! Atlantic's Richard Nash has the game-plan: "This single is the long-awaited smash follow-up for Chuckii Booker. JON LESHAY ELEKTRA RECORDS, N.Y. Our weekly call from Leshay: "Lady, I want you to finally give me some ink on my bands." Hey Jon, if you read a trade besides the CVC Report, you'd know we're gaga over Chris Harford and Luna. Háve wedding plans left you overwhelmed, searching for His & Her dashikis with matching ponytail holders? By the way, hearing the new 10,000 Maniacs LP "Our Time In Eden" has been the absolute highlight of our week, which is more than we can say about hearing from you. (O HEAP if7?, How did the KuIt start? Me and some friends were bored one winter, so we borrowed a friend's camera and started to make a totally self-indulgent film — only our friend took back the camera before we got too far, so we worked SLEAZY on the soundtrack instead The music kinds-1 took ou from there. sex. This is a pretty kinky, sex-filled album. Well, this is the ultimate cabaret nom nell. We ve always wanted to do a disco album — something with a "Stars on 45" flavor. In arranging each track, we left the lyrics very open and avoided being gender-specific — no he/she/it. We left it completely open. It is a sexy album for everyone. Were you a '70s child? PERVERSE I was raised in the Glitter Rock era — the whole scene was rooted in pleasure. the gay discos where anything goes. Then in '76 and '77, the scene shihea to punk and I started taking that in. That was the phase when I was "out there" and the whole scene was growing — this actually was before all the "disco sucks" backlash. SHOCKING What do you make of this whole techno scene — drugs, decadence. sex, sleaze, etc.? This is the tabloid-rock tale of blatant lust and go-go grunge-disco in the It all cracks me up. We really began doing a lot of the kind of stuff that's considered Techno now. It's amazing how some of the international sin set. Fundamentalists far and wide are aflutter over the mainstream and rap bands are integrating "weirdness" and odd expansion and antics of the infamous Chicago-based outfit My Life With samples — there's a lot of crossover in dance and rock. The Thrill Kill Kull. Led by the mysterious and totally fictional Groovie Your song "Sex on Wheelz," was the lead single from Mann, the Thrill Kill KuIt reportedly sprang from film soundtrack and the film "Cool World" — a film which was trashed by industrial roots before evolving into the massive '90s disco threat it is critics. What did you think of it? today. This collective of go-go dancin', leather-prancin', hell-enhancin' I haven't seen it — but I hear it's not too good. I really liked working with Ralph Bakshi on the video. I'd like to work with him again. He's hoodlums are rehashing old '70s sounds to a '90s guitar-grunge technobeat got a real .cynical, hardcore attitude, which I found to be really cool. I in an outright, blasphemous attempt to bring back bellbottoms, smile really dig "Fritz the Cat" and all his earlier works; maybe he should buttons and Jimmy Carter. Has anyone notified Dan Quayle? We sent HITS' have stayed loyal to the rawness of those earlier films. Brett "That's Geraldo, Not Gerardo" Atwood to investigate this startling How are you going to try to take your demonic state of moral decay only to lose him in a quagmire of platform shoes and madness fo the masses? I get kinda tired catering to all the Satanic, black-widowed children. A lot "Brady Bunch" re-runs. HEEEEELLIILLPPPPPlum of our audience is into the dark side of things, but after awhile, people start to realize that it's all in fun. It's just another element that we call on in the music. We actually get a good mix of people at our shows now. Do you enjoy shocking the far right? Not particularly. We just do our own thing and if someone gets offended, well, that's their problem t saw a T-shirt the other day that said "Lick Bush." Would you rather lick Bush and pick Clinton, lick Clinton and pick Bush, or just lick yourself and your followers? Well, I guess I d have to lick Bush. You might fit in well with the gang at "Melrose Place"... N0000!!!! I don't think that's my style. I don't really watch TV that much. I suppose you're going to tour soon. We're going to tour the States for about ten shows in September before going to Europe to tour with EMF. We have been dabbling with our next project, which will come out next year. All I can say about that is it is going to be a return to our earlier style of sorts. Do you prefer "Disco Duck" or "Stairway To Heaven"? That's a weird question! I think I'm possessed by Satan. Thot explains it. In that case, I'd have to go for "Disco Di-k "

"THIS IS the ULTIMATE cabaret from HELL."

POMO PICKS Edited by Karen Glauber POMO MUGS Sugar,"Copper Blue" (Rykodisc): Bob Mould has certainly never been accused of being coy. Whether with Husker Du, as a solo artist, or in his latest trio, Bob has always worn his heart on his sleeve, creating Post Modern poetry seething fury, desperation and outrage, enhanced by his buzzsaw guitar. Sugar finds Mould back in the role of bandleader, a benign despot in search of a new musical expression. Deceivingly straightforward and melodic as hell, Mould sounds ,downright cheerful as he sings "Helpless" and "A Good Idea." One can only hope.
