American Sign Language - Grades: 6, 7, 8 (12 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 I am excited to share the beginning conversation skills in ASL (American Sign Language). In this class you will learn about how sign language is not just on your hands, but on your face too! We will learn and practice basic conversations, learn about how the culture of the Deaf community differs from hearing people and explore the world of famous Deaf people. The class will be voice off for half of the time allowing you to have a “real life” experience. Hope to see you there! --Teacher: AmberJoy Coble

Baking, Advanced - Grades: 6, 7, 8 (10 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2.5 hours with 0.5 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=3 Ready, set, BAAAAAKKKKKKEEE…… No wait a minute not so fast. We need to learn a few things before we bake some awesomeness. First, we will explore our kitchen, understand tools of the trade, what’s the difference between butter and margarine, why you never scoop flour, and find out why your cookies turn out flat? Oh, the things you will learn about turning out quality goodies. Your parents will be amazed. Students must have prior baking experience (like at home) and have a desire to learn about the science behind baking. --Teacher: Jim Diacogiannis

Bandstra – Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (30 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Students in this class may choose to learn the fundamentals of music from learning to play a band or string instrument. The following instruments will be introduced to the class and students will choose one to study for the semester: violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion (snare/bells to start). Students will be given opportunities to practice what they have learned in class at home, then incorporate this musical knowledge into a full ensemble. Weekly classes will build on each other – students will be taught at a pace that adapts to the individual as well as the group needs. Classes will culminate with a concert that showcases musical skills developed throughout the course. Although this is primarily geared towards beginning music students, all those with experience are encouraged to join – there will be opportunities for the development of leadership among the group. –Teacher: Chad Nuckles-Flinn

Beginner Hand Drum Ensemble – Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 Drumming is a powerful experience. Drumming covers human experience from ancient to modern times and from simple primal beats to the most intricate and complex music. The younger the student the easier it is. No musical background necessary. This class is accessible to everyone, even those who think they can't "keep a beat." We will learn techniques from the ground up, as well as providing some cultural background about the drums and the rhythms we play. Students will learn how to hold their part in a multi-part drum rhythm from Africa or Cuba. Percussion instruments will be provided. -- Teacher Chad Nuckles-Flinn

Book & Cook - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3 (14 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 0.5 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=1.5

Families will sign up as classroom helpers on a rotating basis. What's better than a good story and comfort food? In this class we will offer a range of developmentally appropriate kitchen skills for our younger learners: mixing, baking, blending, assembling, chopping, etc. Each student will create a cookbook of the recipes they make in class. Each class will feature a storybook that relates to our cooking adventures. On occasion we will embark on excursions in our Happy Valley/Fairhaven neighborhood. --Teachers: Carol Makela & Piper Mertle

Breakfast With Friends - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (12 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Let's make breakfast together! We will prepare healthy & original breakfasts as we learn cooking skills such as planning, measuring, chopping & dicing, grating, and cooking over the stove and griddle. We will enjoy our homemade meals with stories and conversation. What a great way to start the day. --Teacher: Carol Makela

Budding Northwest Naturalists - Grades: 3, 4, 5 (20 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=3 * This class includes occasional outdoor learning time as well as field trips. ** This class will offer North Star Sign in/Sign out procedures.

In this class students will develop and hone their naturalist skills while getting to know the plants, animals and people that call the pacific northwest home. Students will engage in multi-sensory, hands-on activities, games, art, stories, and poetry to explore both the unique independent and interdependent features of our natural, cultural, and human history. Students will build scientific skills and share new knowledge through curiosity, observation, discussion, reading, writing, journaling, and drawing. Build a Blog and Podcast - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Blogging is a great format to encourage students to write more, as they share ideas, take and edit photos, select layout designs and make their voice matter. Podcasting is another extension to help them express themselves. Students will plan, organize and present a blog and a podcast on a topic or topics of their choice. --Teacher: Marci Bass

Center Stage: Theater Production - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=4

This is a drama class which will culminate in a production. Students are expected to attend every class. In addition to regular class hours, students may be called in to attend Theater Lab which will be scheduled at a later date. Come play with us! We’ll start out by exploring the many elements of theater through active drama and improv games with a focus on fun. Learn about character development, voice, improvisation, movement and more. Starting in the second month of class students will rehearse a full-length original play which will be presented to our community. --Teacher: Carol Makela

Ceramics - Grades: K, 1, 2 | 3, 4, 5 (16 students) We will learn how to manipulate clay into decorative and functional items. Examples include: making little pinched pots, decorative beads, unique tiles and perhaps even wind chimes! Kids will also learn how to use ceramic tools and embracing mistakes. While having fun creating, your child will improve their motor skills, learn how to solve problems, and practice hand building techniques. --Teacher: Sammy Cousens *Parent involvement needed to support this class. *Please make sure your child wears something they don't mind getting messy (an old t-shirt).

Choir - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (20 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1

If you can talk you can sing!! Singing is a form of self-expression that can lead to self-knowledge and self- confidence. Singing in a group is all about collaboration, cooperation, and listening and responding simultaneously! Come join us as we explore music fundamentals, vocal technique and team building in a safe, nurturing and creative atmosphere. Parents are welcome to participate.

This choir focuses on creating a safe environment for students to express themselves musically. We create an atmosphere where exploring our vocal instruments and practicing vocal techniques through warm ups and songs feels easy and possible for everyone. We start with unison singing and add rounds and harmonies as the choir progresses. Teacher Karen

Circles, Lines & Squares -- World Dance - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (20 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1

The early grades are an ideal time to introduce children to different styles of dance. At this age, children are eager to explore all the ways their bodies can move and are open to taking risks and following cues. Children and families are invited to join Teachers Piper & Carol M. as we lead you through social dances from around the world! No experience is necessary. Cooking K-5 - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (12 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 2 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=4 The Cooking Community at BFPP fosters basic culinary skills, team-work and responsibility for all kitchen chores, including set-up, cooking and clean-up. Cooking naturally bridges multiple subjects in a meaningful way: math (measurement, scaling recipes in proportion to servings required), language arts (reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing), social studies (from where does this recipe originate?) science (the alchemy of specific ingredients mixed together, then chilled or heated results in…voila!) and art (creating a cookbook/scrapbook of recipes in class). Students are encouraged to cook at home to practice what we have learned in class and are expected to create dishes and share them in our community once a month. --Teacher: Annie Madsen-Boydstun

Cooking - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (12 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=3 This class will focus on cooking/baking basics for those students who would like to become more proficient in the kitchen. The how’s about shopping, preparing and making simple, complex meals to feed small groups and large alike. Students will learn about proper cooking/baking techniques, mixing ingredients, and reading recipes correctly. Students will explore practical recipes that they choose and then make. --Teacher: Jim Diacogiannis

Creatures Great and Small - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1

Mystical creatures, robots, pirates, dragons, mermaids, monsters, and aliens…..we’ve seen them in cartoons, books, movies and our imagination. Now let’s make some of our own. This class will combine the reading of great stories and creativity of art. Each week we will read books, create with crafts and art and develop our own creature stories through cartooning. Bring your imagination and come have fun! –Teacher: Kate Baehr

Critical Literacy: Exploring Utopias in The Giver, Anthem and Gattica - Grades: 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. This class will engage middle school students in a grade-level exploration of three dystopian texts: The Giver by Lois Lowry, Anthem by Ayn Rand, and Attica written and directed by Andrew Niccoli. Through independent reading, journal writing, small/whole group discussions, actor’s studios, class debates, and film viewing, students will explore the darker sides of humanity’s search for the perfect society. (Be advised: these texts present mature themes: death, euthanasia, eugenics, genocide) --Teacher: Erin McCarthy

Critical Thinking & Gaming - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation.

Digital Storytelling - Grades: 3, 4, 5 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 The art of storytelling has been around for thousands of years and children are natural storytellers. This class is designed to help students take these ideas and retell stories using a digital format. Each unit will have a learning together process, independent student work sessions and whole group sharing of their learning. --Teacher: Marci Bass

Famous Artists and Their Pets - Grades: 2, 3, 4, 5 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2

A fun art survey especially for animal lovers. Did you know that Salvador Dali liked ocelots and anteaters? Pablo Picasso had a white mouse and a goat?! Discover several of the world’s most cherished artists through stories about their pets and or animals they adored. Experience visuals of their work and take the opportunity to emulate their style, and/or research deeper into their individual histories. --Teacher: Annie Madsen-Boydstun

Fibonacci and the Golden Spiral - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 In this course we will explore various elements of art and math, such as the Golden Spiral (and the mathematician Fibonacci), fractals, and tessellations . We will discover the mystersies of numbers and nature. We will do art one week and follow up with an art lesson the next. --Teacher: Kate Baehr

5th Grade Experience - Grade: 5 (30 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 2 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=4

This course is designed to help 5th grade students get ready for the Mountain School trip at the Northwest Cascades Institute on March 11-13, prepare and compete in the all district track meet in June, work on science investigations and research projects, learn about adolescent growth and development and work toward building strong connections in their social community. --Teacher: Marci Bass

Folk Art Around the World - Grades: 1, 2 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=3 In this class, students will travel the world to discover a variety of folk traditions in art and craft. Each exploration will begin with a journey using maps, literature, and visual media to learn about the location and culture of a particular place in the world. We will then launch into a project inspired by folk art and craft traditions in a variety of media which may include: paper, paint, fabric, wood, yarn and clay. Some projects will be completed in one class while others may extend over two or more classes. --Teacher: Carol Fuglestad

For Art's Sake - Grades: 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 This class will be a conglomerate of different art projects from drawing and painting, to wire sculpture, duct tape, clay and different fibers. Students will have the space to explore the mediums that help them express themselves artistically and be challenged to dig deeper into their artistic passions. They will be asked to keep a sketchbook for their ideas and research. --Teacher: Marci Bass

Français is Fantastique! French for Middle School - Grades: 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 All students are welcome to join French class at any time during the year. We introduce new topics and review familiar ones in fun ways all year long. From Paris to Canada to Africa, French is spoken around the world. Let's discover the francophone world together!

We'll experience French through games, stories, music, art and cuisine. We will role play a variety of situations, and have fun ordering at a cafe, shopping at the outdoor market or putting on a fashion show. Students will learn basic vocabulary, be able to ask and answer simple questions, and share about themselves. --Teacher: Piper Mertle

Growing in the Garden - Grades: 2, 3, 4 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 Hands-on learning, science, literature, art and creativity come together in this class that focuses on the BFPP school garden. Activities will include digging in the dirt, planting, harvesting, learning about plant and animal life cycles, conducting experiments and making observations, listening to garden stories and creating through art, poetry and writing. Indoor and outdoor projects will allow for flexibility when the weather is inclement but students in this class should always be prepared for being outdoors! During the winter, while the garden sleeps, we will focus on some fun indoor gardening projects, learn about water cycles and watersheds, and other garden related topics. When the days warm, we’ll begin to plant outside and look for birds, insect life and other signs of spring. --Teacher: Carol Fuglestad

Happy Feet - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 Act, dance, play, and let your imagination soar! Explore movement, voice, and improvisation in a great class to bring out your inner artist. Children will have fun doing creative movement and working together to explore the concepts of Space, Time, Effort and Form. They will experiment with drama skills and showcase their work by participating in a production put on by the 4th through 8th grade theater class. Most classes will incorporate Braindance, which is a series of developmental movement patterns that prepare us for learning and helps with appropriate behavior and social skills. --Teacher: Carol Makela

Hola! Salut! Hello! - Grades: : K, 1 | 2, 3 (20 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 0.5 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=1.5 Introduction to the Spanish and French languages. Students will learn basic vocabulary in an arts-based learning environment. Intro to Guitar - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (20 students)

Introduction to Mountain Biking - Grades: 3, 4, 5 (10 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1.5 hours with 0.5 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Rain or shine, let's spin our wheels! Classes will practice safety checks, braking skills, handling skills, and hone sensory skills building bike-body separation. Each day will include some skills training and ride time. I hope to also arrange one trail maintenance day. All levels are welcome in suppor of each others' growth and comfort on single track trails. --Teacher: Randy Leventhal

K Experience - Grade: K (24 students) Class held 2 times each week for 3 hours with 4 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=10 Creating a loving, safe community to discover ourselves and one another is at the heart of what we do in kindergarten. Kids are natural inquirers. Through interests, experiences and self-directed play, learning becomes authentic and meaningful. Kids will have time to explore their interests, make friends and work on their social and emotional skills throughout the day. In order to insure a high-quality kindergarten experience parents will be asked to join us periodically for collaborative experiences. --Teacher: Sam Stapleton-Cousens

Lego Architects - Grades: 5, 6, 7, 8 (12 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 The foundation of teamwork is helping one another work toward a goal. Students will have the opportunity to design, build and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS while having fun developing collaboration skills. All skill levels welcome. Weight=1 Make yourself comfortable, unpack your lunch and enjoy a brain vacation as you are read to from Teacher Annie’s vast collection of children’s literature. Books will be selected based upon season, theme and student interest. Students will be encouraged to read on their own and to share recommendations with the group. Loving Literacy - Grades: 1, 2 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Loving Literacy is designed to give early literacy learners authentic reading and writing choices which will help learners continue to develop their love of literacy (reading, writing, speaking). Each week students will engage in supported writing and reading activities. Young readers and writers will also participate in fun whole-group and specialized small-group activities. We will build words and sounds through multiple modalities. Learners will draw and label pictures, write sentences and small stories and have opportunities to present their work to the broader community. Activities will include letter writing, shared group storytelling, journaling and much more. - -Teacher: Erica Wolverton

In this class we will explore the intersection of math and art through hands-on projects that develop creativity and observation skills, use our brain’s desire to find patterns, encourage critical thinking, and make use of multiple materials and art techniques. Art and architecture, fractals and fractions, origami and octagons are all possible topics to be explored. This class combines studies in math, art and architecture. We will explore and create with 2 and 3 dimensional shapes, study the design and engineering of buildings and create geometric works of art. Come and discover the many ways that math and art come together in surprising ways. While studying a set of everyday objects, including food, faces, paper, grids and shoes, we will explore the intersection of math and art. Hands-on projects will develop creativity and observation skills, encourage critical thinking and make use of multiple materials and art techniques. Math Circle - Grades: 1, 2 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 Math circle is an enrichment class to develop and support a positive attitude towards mathematics by introducing students to concepts as well as elements of mathematical culture. The focus will be on problem solving and reasoning using age-appropriate activities. Classes may include demonstrations, storytelling, games, guided discussions, independent work, teamwork, or hands-on activities. Concepts will cover number sense, addition, subtraction, measurement, time, and shapes. --Teacher: Randy Leventha

Middle School Cohort - Grades: 6, 7, 8 (40 students) Class held 2 time2 each week for 5.5 hours with 3 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=14 The middle years of childhood, ages 11-14, are another important time for learning, growth and socialization. With a particular focus on the developmental and social needs of this age group, BFPP is offering the Middle School Cohort for 2019/2020.

This is a program option available to all Middle School students and families who are interested in participating in a full two-day program that prioritizes the following: • Positive adolescent social-emotional development • Culturally-responsive education • Collaborative learning and varied group work • Mentorship models and peer supports • Experiential learning and field trips • Deeper Learning Competencies of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, citizenship, character and communication.

At the core of this cohort model is the investigation of “Who am I and where do I fit in the world?” Curriculum models will include an emphasis on the humanities while promoting critical thinking, reading strategies, writing process, and researching skills.Students will strengthen their understanding of personal, local and global perspectives while increasing skills in self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. Mini Makerspace - Grades: 1, 2 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 In this course, students will work with the design process to ask questions, make observations and demonstrate understanding through hands-on science and engineering projects. With guidance, students will learn to use digital tools (photos, sketches, videos) to publish their scientific findings and inventions both individually and in small groups. --Teacher: Marci Bass

Movement Monday! - Grades: K, 1, 2 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Kids learn best through movement. While having fun we will also be boosting our confidence and our motivation. Kids will have space to develop self-awareness, self regulation and just play! A snapshot of this class includes learning wand and hoola hoop stunts, tossing and catching scarves, dancing to music, playing insturments in a group, jumping rope and learning jumprope songs, and creating obstacle coarses. --Teacher: Sammy Cousens

Musical Spanish - Grades: K, 1, 2 (14 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Music is the most effective and fun way to learn a second language. In this class, students will sing, play simple instruments, and learn dances from Spanish and Latin American cultures. --Teacher: Carol Makela

Newspaper - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 2 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=4 Third graders will be welcome to join with special permission. Please contact teacher Erica Wolverton. Grab your reporter’s badge, a journalist’s notebook and your favorite pencil to learn how to become a self- directed passionate reporter who is an active and critical participant in our school community. Our newspaper team will work collaboratively to publish a BFPP school newspaper by writing and publishing feature articles, producing advertisements, creating comics and developing any other pieces or articles inspired by the cool happenings at our school. All writing levels are welcome as long as you have an interest and a passion for working collaboratively and an ability to also work independently within deadlines. **Please note: In an effort to receive the most authentic reporting experiences, reporters will be asked to go out on special assignments. This may require some flexibility in your schedule . Students will produce at least 3 editions each semester, which means your reporter may be asked to go on special assignment at least three different times per semester. --Teacher: Erica Wolverton

Outdoor PE @ Cornwall Park - Grades: 5, 6, 7, 8 (15 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1.5 hours with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1.5 This class will explore the following indivdual and team sports. Disc golf, Pickleball, Horseshoes, Ultimate Frisbee, and possibly Tennis. Please note that when it rains, class may take place on the BFPP campus. Please check in with Teacher Jim on Monday mornings as to the location class. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate in our activites. Parents need to have a field trip form filled out by the first day of class. You can pick the form from Teacher Jim's desk. Paint Play and Journal - Grades: 3, 4, 5 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with at-home learning expectation. Let’s embrace the unexpected! In this class we will learn how to appreciate the creative process of making art while also learning line work skills and adding details to our art. At the end of each class we will reflect as a group on the day’s work and use our Art Journals to document the experience. We will focus less on the end result and more on the concept of creating. It will be messy, intentional and kids will leave this class with a one of a kind Art Journal to document their experiences. *Parent involvement needed to support this class. --Teacher: Sammy Cousens

Park Class – Grades: 2, 3, 4, 5 (10 students) Class held 1 time each week for 4 hours with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=4 ** Note: This is an off-campus class. Family assistance for transportation and/or participation may be necessary. Student will also be prepared for the day outside dressed for the weather with lunch, water, and snacks. Outside learning will come alive each week as we walk, hike, run, and amble through rotating local parks based on natural and human history themes. Together we will notice the gifts of nature and discover all the learning it offers about mapping, weather, plants, trees, animals, rocks and more including ourselves and others using collaborative decision-making strategies. Games and activities offer but one of the pathways to help advance these age-related skills and concepts. --Teacher: Randy Leventhal

Poetry and Art - Grades: 2, 3, 4, 5 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 If you painted your favorite poem what color would you use to describe the feeling you get when you hear it? What would the poem feel like if you held it in your hand? If we turned a painting into a poem which words would best describe it? Would you be able to hear the sounds the painting was making? These are the questions we will explore as we read and write inspirational or funny or dark or powerful poetry written by published authors and by our own pens. We will use a variety of art materials and techniques to bring the color and textures of poetry to life. This class will be messy and creative, exploratory and fun. --Teacher: Erica Wolverton

Read-aloud, Read along, Re(ad)spond - Grades: 2, 3, 4, 5 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 Come snuggle up with a good book and explore reading chapter books in a cozy, story-time environment. Every week we will read a chapter+ of our read aloud, embedding information about elements of stories, taking time to define unknown words and explore symbolic language, and making sure there is time to respond to the story through discussion, writing and/or art. Mostly however, we will enjoy a story together through reading. Students can read along or just listen, but we will keep the story in class! Repurposed Art - Grades: K, 1, 2 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Parent involvement is encouraged. Each project is a creative invitation! Kids will engage in learning new techniques to make art with a plethora of possibilities. These projects are open ended creations while students work to problem solve and create. Kids will also learn that things once headed for the garbage could perhaps be reused for art and treasures! The value lies in experimenting and seeing things in new ways! At home learning includes searching for treasure to repurpose for projects we are working on in class or projects you have started at home. Practice recycling at home! --Teacher: Sammy Cousens

Seekers of Discovery & Action - Grades: 3, 4, 5 (20 students) Class held 2 times each week for 2 hours with 2 hours at-home learning expectation. Weight=6 Students will have opportunities to explore their own questions about the world around them both across the globe and in their own backyard. They will discover and share questions and wonderings through observation, and research, through creating stories, poems and plays, and through games and the arts. Students will have opportunities to work alone, with partners, and in groups and will share their discoveries with the class through presentations and performances. Sew What? - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (12 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=3 Have you ever been at a store and thought, I would like to make that!? This course will help guide you through basic sewing skills using the sewing machine as you make useful items to keep or give away. We will also learn how to handstich, add zippers, snaps, buttons, beads and appliqué all so we can add character to our projects. Some projects may include a pillowcase, zipper pouch, hat, simple clothing items and more. --Teacher: Marci Bass

Songwriter Workshop - Grades: 2, 3, 4, 5 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 (Sing the following to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star...)Writing lyrics, singing songs-- Melodies, harmonies, chord progressions-- In a supportive and safe atmosphere-- Learning from experts, learning from peers-- Come all song writers and wannabees--- Sign up for songwriting at the BFPP!In a workshop environment, we will explore songwriting. Weight=2 Using real life conversations and TPR (Total Physical Response) Storytelling and skits, students will learn how to ask and answer questions about themselves and others including personal descriptions, likes and dislikes, and perferences. --Teacher: Carol Makela

Springboard Writing - Grades: 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Are you a middle school student who wants to increase their grade-level writing skills? Have you been working at home on practicing your grammar, sentence fluency, paragraphing and essay writing skills and wish you could learn alongside peers in a rigorous learning environment that supported your learning style while increasing your writing skills to support your transition into high school level writing? Well, Springboard Writing is the class for you! In this class, students will engage in a series of writing workshops that promote critical thinking and collaboration skills while reviewing basic narrative and expository writing structures supported by a scaffolded writing process. Each week the writing workshop will include: online typing (Typing Tutor), collaborative grammar practice (DOL and Editor in Chief), analogy and word study (501 Word Analogy Questions and Think Analogies), targeted writing workshops (target lessons adapted from Springboard Writing, WriteShop, and Writing With Ease) and a writing lab with teacher support and digital writing tools. --Teacher: Erin McCarthy

Story Making - Grades: K, 1, 2 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Parents are welcome to join us to help children document their stories only. Story making is an inquiry-based class. Children will have time to explore, make a mess, experiment and investigate independently and collaboratively. Next, kids will learn how to use these open-ended materials (such as blocks) to help them create stories. This is an authentic and organic process using objects and language to represent their ideas in a story format. --Teacher: Sammy Cousens

TA Class - Grades: 6, 7, 8 (18 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Teacher Aides will need to commit to helping in a class a minimum of one hour a week. The BFPP Community has benefitted greatly from our older participants as they guide and nurture younger students. In the Teacher Aide Course, students in grades 6 – 8 will meet with a BFPP Instructor once a week to discuss roles and responsibilities in the classes they support. Schedule is flexible to reflect the needs of classes as well as the “TA”. Teacher Aides will discuss topics such as: How can I best support the learners? The instructors? How do children develop and learn? What skills lead to good relationships among children, teachers and parents? Students will be expected to demonstrate a reflective practice as they develop increased skill in the classes they serve. --Teacher: Annie Madsen-Boydstun

Tech/Tink/Code - Grades: K, 1 | 2, 3, 4 | 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Students will learn coding basics through hands-on activities, games, code.org, tech tinker projects and robotics. Students will develop the skills of a computer scientist through the development of Computational Thinking Practices: creativity, collaboration, communication, persistence and problem solving. --Teacher: Marci Bass

Technical Theater - Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Imagine! Build! Create! Do you ever wonder what happens behind the scenes of a play, TV show or movie? In this hands-on class we will learn and apply aspects of technical theater including costume and set design, prop building, and (sometimes creepy) stage makeup. That's My Business! - Grades: 4, 5, 6 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 2 hours with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=3 In this course, students will take an idea, research, tinker and work through the design process to build a prototype. They will develop the story of their product explaining what problem it solves. Entrepreneurs will conduct a cost analysis to market their product and make a logo, business cards, and present their idea to the class and/or BFPP community. They will have the opportunity to take their business beyond the classroom walls and sell their product at the BFPP craft fair, the Bellingham Market kids vending days and/or the local library's annual children's craft fair. --Teacher: Marci Bass Ukulele and/or Recorder – Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with 1 hour at-home learning expectation. Weight=2 Students will learn melody, harmony, rhythm and music theory through learning the very accessible string and wind instruments: ukulele and recorder. They will play, sing and listen to each other to develop exciting sounds. Students will need to develop a habit of home practice to get the most out of this class. Wings and Tales - Grades: 2, 3, 4 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 Birds are amazing, beautiful and mysterious. In this class we will research the birds in our backyards and community. We will learn about their talents as long-distance travelers and nest builders and plan for ways to bring birds into our schoolyard. We’ll learn about the importance of certain birds in the tales and art of the Coast Salish people. Our bird study will include explorations in drawing, painting and poetry. --Teacher: Carol Fuglestad

Yoga and Mindfulness - Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (16 students) Class held 1 time each week for 1 hour with no at-home learning expectation. Weight=1 This is a parent/child class. Please bring your own yoga matt, a bolster and block if you have one. Relax your mind and body. Become more flexible, strengthen muscles, increase your balance, decrease stress, regulate emotions, build resilience and the list goes on!
