It Is Easy to Interpret Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five and Anthony
It is easy to interpret Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five and Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange as cynical and pessimistic novels. The profusion of graphic images involving death, gang violence, and war make it difficult to walk away from either text with a hopeful outlook for the future of mankind. Thus, many literary critics label Vonnegut and Burgess as fatalists who argue for an acceptance of deterministic forces that eventually cause humans harm and suffering. However, other critics, such as Liu Hong, Wayne McGinnis, Todd Davis, and Kenneth Womack, all contend that at the end of the day Vonnegut and Burgess offer an opinion of humanity that is hopeful and encouraging. To these critics, the authors ultimately argue that the individual has the ability to determine their own fate in a horrific and often hurtful world. The standard debate concerning these two revolutionary authors has thus been one between a message of either hope or disparagement. It is a debate that has long been discussed among literary critics and continues to be an ever-changing discussion. My contention is that both Vonnegut and Burgess each create a body of work that offers the reader hope, empowerment, and an optimistic outlook of a future that is better than their present, or rather the present setting of their characters. Thus, I agree with critics like McGinnis, who calls Slaughterhouse-Five Vonnegut’s “most hopeful novel to date” (McGinnis 121), or Davis and Womack, who find that A Clockwork Orange’s protagonist ultimately finds a hopeful and optimistic conclusion in embarking “…upon a lifetime of familial commitment and human renewal.” (Davis, Womack 34). -
The Endless Fall of Suge Knight He Sold America on a West Coast Gangster Fantasy — and Embodied It
The Endless Fall of Suge Knight He sold America on a West Coast gangster fantasy — and embodied it. Then the bills came due BY MATT DIEHL July 6, 2015 Share Tweet Share Comment Email This could finally be the end of the road for Suge Knight, who helped bring West Coast gangsta rap to the mainstream. Photo illustration by Sean McCabe On March 20th, inside the high-security wing of Los Angeles' Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, the man once called "the most feared man in hip-hop" is looking more like the 50-year-old with chronic health issues that he is. Suge Knight sits in shackles, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and chunky glasses, his beard flecked with gray, listening impassively. It's the end of the day's proceedings, and Judge Ronald S. Coen is announcing the bail for Knight, who is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run: "In this court's opinion, $25 million is reasonable, and it is so set." A gasp erupts from Knight's row of supporters — some of whom sport red clothing or accessories, a color associated with the Bloods and Piru street gangs. The most shocked are Knight's family, who have attended nearly all of his court dates: his parents, along with his fiancee, Toilin Kelly, and sister Karen Anderson. "He's never had a bail like that before!" Anderson exclaims. SIDEBAR 30 Most Embarrassing Rock-Star Arrests » As attendees exit and Knight is escorted out by the bailiffs, Knight's attorney Matthew Fletcher pleads with Coen to reconsider. -

Daniel Victor Biography & Boiler Plate
DANIEL VICTOR BIOGRAPHY & BOILER PLATE Updated: May 2020 Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and performing artist Daniel Victor (born Daniel Victor Batista, age 26) is emerging in the music scene with a unique, genre-bending style. Fusing pop-star energy with hip-hop wordsmithing and some occasional latin flair, his output playfully swings between vibey, charming ballads and bass-heavy, energetic verses, often blurring the distinction between the two. Victor fell in love with poetry and music at a young age and drew inspiration from a variety of artists including Slaughterhouse, Justin Timberlake, and Eminem. As his music matured, he gravitated towards artists like Luke Christopher, Jon Bellion and J. Cole, whose vivid, personal storytelling and clever lyricism initially captured his interest. Victor’s own marriage of hip-hop and pop music (that he affectionately refers to as “hip-pop”) is a direct result of his eclectic and wide-spanning musical palate. All of Daniel Victor’s records are, to his listeners’ surprise, devoid of many of the major characterizations in conventional hip-hop. His entire discography is free from profanity and explicit content, all without sacrificing the contagious energy and relatable topics steeped in personal experience. As Daniel continues to create new music, he looks forward to bringing it to the stage, and to prove that you don't always need to grow up. “How Dentistry Changed 11 Lives… …Forever!” #1 “Never Another Lonely Night…”
Eleven Personal Stories “How Dentistry Changed 11 Lives… …Forever!” #1 “Never Another Lonely Night…” “She has a GREAT personality!” That’s what my friends always told the men that they thought would be “just perfect” for me, and that they endlessly tried to set me up with. And, actually, that was very true. I had a great personality. But personality only gets someone so far. I started to realize this after an endless string of first dates. Most of the first dates would end with, “I'll call you.” I got used to waiting for calls from uninterested men. Sometimes the first dates would lead to second dates, but not very often. And not with men I was really interested in anyway. I would just go on the dates because I thought I wasn't trying hard enough. My friends would reassure me. They would tell me that meeting the right person takes time. But I knew. I knew that there was something else wrong. Sure I had a great personality, but I knew I had to do something. This something would have to be done soon if I ever wanted to meet someone that I would want to spend the rest of my life with, or if I at least wanted to develop a long-term relationship with a man. So, I took a long, hard look at myself. Sure I had an awesome personality, but I knew there had to be something thing else I could do. That's when it struck me. The one thing I had never really thought about was my smile.
