Rasmus Dahlin scored his second goal of the season and Victor Olofsson beat Jarry on a penalty shot in the third period, but the NHL’s worst team remained in a tailspin.

The call-ups were made Monday, a day after Buffalo closed out seven straight games on the road with a 4-1 loss at Philadelphia. The Sabres host Winnipeg on Tuesday. Guhle has seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 35 games in his first season with Rochester. He was Buffalo’s second- round pick in the 2015 draft and played three games with the Sabres during the 2016 season on an emergency call-up basis. Ullmark is tied for the AHL lead with 17 wins and ranks fourth with a .928 save percentage this season. He is 8-11-2 in 21 NHL career games. Mark Scheifele, Andrew Copp and Jacob Trouba took advantage of an off-day and made the quick trip to Minneapolis to watch the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII. "Unbelievable," Scheifele said Monday following practice. "Obviously lucky that it was in Minnesota, we had a day off. I surprised my brother and my best friend with their Christmas gifts — they got to come to the Super Bowl. And then Copper and Troubs came, too. It’s definitely something to cross off the bucket list and something that I’ll never forget." They took an early morning flight, soaked up the atmosphere before and during the game, and then caught a late-night flight home. Copp, a former high school quarterback in Michigan, said it was a "once-in-a-lifetime experience" and marvelled at getting to watch New England quarterback Tom Brady in action — even if it was in a losing effort. "It was a crazy game. There wasn’t much more Tom could have done — maybe catch the ball — but he was unbelievable," Copp said. "I turned to (Trouba) a few times and it was just like, ‘Wow, he’s playing one of the best games of his career, probably.’ And then (Philadelphia quarterback Nick) Foles made some great throws, too, so it was definitely an entertaining back- and-forth game." Copp and Scheifele didn’t hide their rooting interests, sporting Brady jerseys.

Winnipeg is buzzing over the return of the NHL, and the puck is about to drop on the inaugural season of the Jets 2.0 at the barn on Portage Avenue. The Montreal Canadiens are the visitors as Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien and Toby Enstrom line up for the opening faceoff. A tall, slender teen named Mark Scheifele is on the bench during the national anthem and will make his NHL debut just 3:05 into the first period. Ondrej Pavelec guards the net, offering the last line of protection against the Habs. There’s great hope surrounding the former Atlanta Thrashers — an eclectic mix of veterans, including two with Stanley Cup rings, and a reasonable crop of talented youngsters. Much of that initial excitement is little more than misguided, blind faith in a team that possesses a few key pieces, but is severely short on roster depth and the prospects cupboard is nearly bare. The Montreal Canadiens bring a shot of reality to the thunderous, electrified celebration at the MTS Centre that historic Sunday afternoon, beating the Jets 5-1. Credit the transplanted group for finishing the season with a respectable 37-35-10 record in the Southeast Division, rocking it at home at 23-13-5.

There are the nuances with the puck and away from it that provide glimpses of the wondrous talent befitting a No. 2 overall pick in the NHL draft. There’s the work ethic that pushes the 18-year-old to stay on the ice working on skills well after practice is over. There’s the fact the third periods of exhibition games have been his best, that he’s been able to adapt as the night moves on. There is the bright future. And there are also the middling numbers of the present. One assist in four games of the Traverse City Prospects Tournament. No points in three NHL exhibition games. At some point, the cold reality is that the Sabres’ top choice has to crack the scoresheet if he wants to stay in the NHL this season. “It’s getting a little frustrating,” Reinhart admitted after practice Tuesday in First Niagara Center. “I think the biggest thing is I’m getting chances, trying to create. I’m just going to stick with it and focus on the bigger picture. But obviously that’s part of my game and I think that’s going to have to come.” Reinhart gets his penultimate chance to make an impression tonight when the Sabres play their preseason home finale against the Washington Capitals (7 p.m, MSG, Radio 550 AM).

After being blown out in the first two games because of atrocious defensive-zone work, Jets head coach Paul Maurice restored order by having his players collapse to the middle of the ice in the defensive zone. Considering what we had watched, I didn’t blame him. Attempting to establish positioning they could hold — and keep the play to the outside as much as possible — made sense to me, even though it’s not a favourite of mine. Sometimes, drastic measures are needed. Backboned by stellar play from goalie Connor Hellebuyck, three wins followed. Let’s throw out the Columbus game and look at those wins and the system. The problem moving forward is that while certain types of chances against are lessened, it also traumatizes the Jets’ ability to transition and go on the attack, taking advantage of their quick- strike power and high-end talent. That talent still holds in these low-event games Maurice wants them to play, but to alesser extent as you’re also producing fewer chances to score. We saw that during their winning streak — the wins over the Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes were tight games. The Jets won 4-2 against Vancouver (with an empty-netter) but were outshot 32-20.
