Fermi’s Paradox – The Last Challenge for Copernicanism? Milan M. Cirkovi´c´ Astronomical Observatory Belgrade, Volgina 7, 11160 Belgrade, Serbia & Department of Physics, University of Novi Sad, Trg Dositeja Obradovi´ca 4, 21000 Novi Sad, Serbia e-mail: [email protected] Abstract We review Fermi’s paradox (or the ”Great Silence” problem), not only arguably the oldest and crucial problem for the Search for ExtraTer- restrial Intelligence (SETI), but also a conundrum of profound scien- tific, philosophical and cultural importance. By a simple analysis of observation selection effects, the correct resolution of Fermi’s paradox is certain to tell us something about the future of humanity. Already a more than three quarters of a century old puzzle – and a quarter of century since the last major review paper in the field by G. David Brin – Fermi’s paradox has generated many ingenious discussions and hy- potheses. We analyze the often tacit methodological assumptions built into various answers to this puzzle and attempt a new classification of the numerous solutions proposed in an already huge literature on the subject. Finally, we consider the ramifications of various classes of hypotheses for the practical SETI projects. Somewhat paradoxically, it seems that the class of (neo)catastrophic hypotheses gives, on bal- ance, the strongest justification for guarded optimism regarding our current and near-future SETI efforts. It is difficult to imagine any biochemical machinery that does not require water. On Earth, life adapts to the most diverse environments and, once established, it is very resilient. Considering that water is a common compound in the Universe, it seems possible (maybe even likely) that one day we will find life elsewhere in the universe. In this study, we review the main aspects of water as an essential compound for life: when it appeared since the Big Bang, and where it spread throughout the diverse cosmic sites. Then, we describe the strong relation between water and life, as we know it. Keywords water; life; universe; H2O; astrobiology 1. Introduction. Why water is essential for life? It is well known that liquid water has played the essential and undeniable role in the emergence, development, and maintenance of life on Earth. Two thirds of the Earth's surface is covered by water, however fresh water is most valuable as a resource for animals and plants. Thus, sustain- ability of our planet's fresh water reserves is an important issue as population numbers increase. Water accounts for 75% of human body mass and is the major constituent of organism fluids. All these facts indicate that water is one of the most important elements for life on Earth. -

We investigate a new strategy which can defeat the (in)famous Carter's “anthropic” argument against extraterrestrial life and intelligence. In contrast to those already considered by Wilson, Livio, and others, the present approach is based on relaxing hidden uniformitarian assumptions, considering instead a dynamical succession of evolutionary regimes governed by both global (Galaxy-wide) and local (planet- or planetary system-limited) regulation mechanisms. This is in accordance with recent developments in both astrophysics and evolutionary biology. Notably, our increased understanding of the nature of supernovae and gamma-ray bursts, as well as of strong coupling between the Solar System and the Galaxy on one hand, and the theories of “punctuated equilibria” of Eldredge and Gould and “macroevolutionary regimes” of Jablonski, Valentine, et al. on the other, are in full accordance with the regulation- mechanism picture. The application of this particular strategy highlights the limits of application of Carter's argument, and indicates that in the real universe its applicability conditions are not satisfied. We conclude that drawing far-reaching conclusions about the scarcity of extraterrestrial intelligence and the prospects of our efforts to detect it on the basis of this argument is unwarranted. -

V8X 4M6 Abstract - It is argued that Eddington's religious beliefs as a lifelong Quak- er were directly related to his philosophy of physical science and his quest for a 'fundamental theory' of the most basic relationships in the physical world. He was trying to reconcile, or even to unite, the two most important things in his life: the excitement of scientific research and the profundity of his own mystical experience. In each realm alike, he saw himself as a seeker led by an 'Inner Light'. In neither did he claim to have reached the goal. The reactions of philosophers and theologians contemporary with Eddington is examined, and some attempt is made to assess the value of his ideas today. 1. Introduction Arthur Stanley Eddington (1 882-1944) has been described as "the most distin- guished astrophysicist of his time" (Chandrasekhar, 1983) and few, if any, would dissent from that assessment. After an outstanding student career at the Universities of Manchester and Cambridge, he was appointed early in 1906 to the post of Chief Assistant at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. He re- turned to Cambridge in 1913 as Plumian Professor and (a year later) Director of the Observatory - posts that he held until his death, 50 years ago. Edding- ton's principal occupation at Greenwich was the study of stellar proper mo- tions and star streaming, which led to the publication of his first book (Edding- ton, 1914). -
