Page 3 News from the Town Council THE GOOD NEWS!

How would you spend £25,000 within the Parish? We are sure that you can make plenty of suggestions…. so put your thinking caps on and let us know.

A few years ago it was agreed as part of a Solar Park planning application that there should be a ‘Community Benefit’ sum of money given to the Parish. is currently holding this money but discussions are in place for it to be passed over to the Town Council for identifying suitable projects.

The Town Council hasagreed to set up a group that will assess applications and make recommendations on how best to see the money spent. There is a stipulation that project(s) must be for the benefit of the Parish, so we can consider one large project or a combination of smaller schemes.

To that end, if you or organisations that you are involved with have any projects or suggestions we would be delighted to hear from you.

For further information on this or an application form please come into the Town Council offices or email [email protected]. Closing date for receipt of applications will be noon on Monday 1st June 2015.

THE BAD NEWS!

As reported in last month’s edition, we are experiencing a spate of vandalism throughout the town again. We are in contact with the Police every week at the moment reporting graffiti at the bus shelters, on play park equipment and damage in the Public Conveniences.

This is so sad to see and very disheartening. Should you witness anything please report it straightaway to the Police on 101 (non urgent) or 999 (urgent) or the Town Council offices on 384039. If this continues to happen the Town Council will be forced to consider closure or withdrawal of such facilities, as the costs of maintenance and repairs will become too great.

In the meantime your money (Council Tax) is increasingly being spent on addressing such anti-social behaviour! Like many things in life… the minority are spoiling it for the majority.

Clean Up Callington – could you help?

Would you, or a community group that you are involved with, be prepared to help pick up litter, in an effort to make the Town a cleaner place? Many nearby towns have held ‘beach cleans’ and ‘clean up’ events and we would like to hear from anyone that might be interested in getting involved.

If there is sufficient interest Cormac will provide a Volunteer Toolkit Trailer, which comes complete with everything from secateurs to shovels, bin bags to wheelbarrows. The trailer is provided completely free of charge and will be delivered to the location of choice for works to be carried out whether that be tidying up a flower bed, doing a litter pick, or giving the main street a wash and brush. Once finished with Cormac will come back to pick up the trailer and move it on the next community group.

For further information on the Toolkit Trailer please see the Cormac website, http://www.cormacltd.co.uk/ who-we-are/supporting-our-local-communities/.

If you would like to assist in cleaning up the Town with such an initiative, please contact the Town Hall or email [email protected] for further information.

Page 4 Back to Basics

Have you heard about Jane and Ian’s crafty “Back to Basics” workshops at Nine Acres, a smallholding on the edge of Callington?

Nine Acres, and our delightful granite barn, are tucked away down Pencrebar Lane (the old Road) now a public footpath between Callington and Newbridge, where incidentally we have just found an Iron Age spindle whorl. Passionate about sustainability and permaculture, we’re running a series of workshops this summer: dyeing with plants, felting, spinning, foraging, paper making, willow work, herbal creams and chalk painting furniture. Building a bread oven is in the pipeline so watch out for traditional bread making courses, anyone know of a good tutor?

We like to do things a little differently at Nine Acres and our courses are about reconnecting with forgotten skills. We use local tutors using local materials and we make these courses affordable to local people.

As well as all this we are well into sustainable beekeeping and we have a number of hives where the emphasis is more on the bees and the environment than on honey production. So if you’re interested in these, do get in touch.

For up to date information on the courses we’re running have a look at www.nineacres-cornwall.co.uk

ALL WELCOME ALL WELCOME

Page 5 50 years of service to Callington Lions

John & Brenda Wood of Callington Lions were recently honoured for their many years of service to the charity.

They were presented with Long Service Medals by Vice District Governor, Lesley Clarke, John for 35 years and Brenda for 15 years service, thus totaling over 50 years. Their constant involvement in helping to raise funds over all these years has seen Callington Lions go from strength to strength. Their endeavours have also taken them to some of the international events in Australia, USA, etc.

As Brenda is the District Centennial Chairperson she is helping to coordinate 100 years of service by Lions Clubs International being held in 2017.

Thanks to the hard work of members such as John and Brenda and the generosity of the people in and around the area, Callington Lions raises in excess of £15,000 a year. This is used for aiding many local charities, groups and individuals such as the Children’s Hospice, mobility chairs, the Scouts, Fire Service radios, Christmas boxes and hampers, wheelchair loan, spectacle collection, Message in a Bottle, Soup Kitchen and many many more.

Some of the money raised also goes towards the £560million collected internationally, where grants are made to many global humanitarian communities such as the Ebola campaign, blindness prevention, disaster relief, youth projects, Special Olympics, diabetes screening, etc.

If you would like to join Callington Lions, please see their web site www.callingtonlions.org.uk

CALLINGTON HERITAGE CENTRE “ I am writing this on the eve of the Official Opening of the Heritage Centre. Anthea Lay our very own “Art Celebrity” who recently took part in BBC’s “Big Painting Challenge” has kindly agreed to do the honours.

In the meantime, our recruitment drive for volunteers continues and I can report that following our attendance at The Portreeve’s Community Day, at which we welcomed many enquirers and visitors to our stand, our profile and presence can only have been enhanced. This was followed by a very successful “Steward’s / Volunteers Evening” attended by 24 people, which gave our existing staff a chance to meet all the newcomers, to show them around the Centre and chat socially over light refreshments. A very lively and enjoyable evening in good company.

As a result of this strong response a new Rota will now become possible. The new Exhibition is building nicely and will be varied throughout the Season with new input, so come along to Liskeard Road and see what your Town has to offer. Current Opening Times are Every Friday 10.00am - 4.00pm and the 1st Saturday of the Month. Enquiries to either Kay Greenstock Tel 01579 383209 or Chris Cansfield Tel 01752 851403.”

The photo captures the moment when Freda Coombe famously pointed out to Elizabeth that the assembled children lining the pavements could not see her, as the Royal Limousine was parked in the way! It was duly moved. As an addendum to this, according to Sheila Lightbody, letters of thanks for this event have been carefully preserved by the Parish Council recording “the very fine welcome given to Princess Elizabeth by the people of Callington and the dignified manner in which Miss Freda Coombe conducted the proceedings”.

Page 7 NEWS FROM CALLINGTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE

March was a very busy month for students at Callington Community College, with a number of performing arts performances and careers visits.

The Annual Dance Show was an opportunity for GCSE and A Level students to showcase their examination work, as well as performances by the College’s Dance Clubs. Also two professional Dance companies: Cheap Date and Spindrift Dance Collective performed. This was a real inspiration for students, who were wowed by their technical precision and quality of both pieces.

As part of the National Theatre’s Connections scheme, the Gifted and Talented performance group, Young and Unique Theatre performed a brand new play, 'Remote' written by Stef Smith. The play represented the wide range of talented Drama students at the College and featured students from every year group. The central characters of Desk and Antler epitomised this diverse age range as they were played brilliantly by a Year 7 boy, Finn Hilsdon and a Year 13 girl, Grace Davies respectively. The students will be performing the play at the Drum Theatre on 18th April.

A group of Music students were lucky enough to spend time rehearsing with the Royal Marine Band at HMS Raleigh, which ended with the students and entire Royal Marine Band giving a short performance of all the pieces that had been rehearsed. A few weeks later, the students then had a Brass workshop with members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The diverse range of music the students have access to at the College, broadens their musical ability for the future.

The Young Americans returned to the College for a fourth time. They are a performing Arts company consisting of forty-one students from all over the world skilled in singing, dancing and performing. They worked over a weekend in March with over 130 students from the College and local primary schools aged 8 to 18. Three days of workshops and rehearsals culminated in a full scale performance on the Sunday night to a packed audience. Throughout the workshops the students were encouraged to build their confidence and work together to develop their performance skills in, singing, dance, song-writing and creativity. Evaluations of the experience really showed how much their confidence had grown in only two days.

Sixth Form students attended the annual “Pathways to Health” careers fair hosted by Treliske Hospital in their state of the art Knowledge Spa. Students had the opportunity to meet and question practitioners from a variety of disciplines from twenty different healthcare providers. It was a fantastic day and all the students were inspired to follow careers in the healthcare profession. Their next challenge is to decide on their direction and apply to universities to study on the right course.

Some Year 9 students went to Cornwall College’s campus to take part in a careers related conference, ‘Be Inspired’. Run by Enterprise South West the event was a chance for youngsters from across the county to work with business people and entrepreneurs from across the south-west. The students will now join a handful of other Year 9s to create this year’s Communication 2020 group.

Callington U3A

Our speaker for March was Helen Dowdall, Callington Town Clerk. Helen gave us an update on how Cornwall Council and Callington Town Council budgets are spent on local services. Helen is a local resident herself and keen to see that the budget is well spent in the community.

She managed to put what could have been a very dry topic over in an interesting way and provoked several questions from the floor. She encouraged residents to bring any concerns to the One Stop Shop in the Town Hall, where they can be brought to the attention of the appropriate department.

Why not come along and join us, have a look at our website www.callingtonU3A.co.uk to see all the activities that are available, not to mention the friendly people.

CALLINGTON BUSINESSES PREPARE TO WIG-UP FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH CANCER

Businesses in Callington including Expressions Hair Studio and Kivells are wigging up for CLIC Sargent’s Wig Wednesday on 20th May to raise vital funds and awareness for children and young people with cancer. Staff of the local businesses will be donating to don a wig for the day on 20th May. Expressions Hair Studio Owner, Caroline Reed, said: “As a local organisation we are keen to do our bit for charity. When we were approached by CLIC Sargent to participate in Wig Wednesday in 2014 we thought it would be a fun and engaging way to raise money. The staff donned blue wigs and customers supported the fundraising by making donations or participating in the Wig Wednesday sweepstake. We raised £30 in 2014 and are keen to raise even more this year.”

May 20th 2015 is one wig day where schools, businesses and organisations can make a great big difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer. Thousands of people across the UK will be donning wigs to raise funds and show support for children and young people with cancer, many of whom lose their hair during treatment.

CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager for Cornwall, Georgina Reed said: “We are so pleased that local businesses in Callington are showing their support for Wig Wednesday, and we are keen for even more sign-ups in the area to turn the town into a “Wig-Whereabouts” on 20th May. The support from local businesses, like Expressions Hair Studio and Kivells, will make a huge difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer.” If you or your workplace, school, or group have been inspired by your local businesses and would like to make a difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer by wigging-up on 20th May 2015, you can find out more at www.clicsargent.org.uk/wigwednesday or call our Devon and Cornwall office on 01392 314672. PORTREEVE’S COMMUNITY DAY – SATURDAY 28TH MARCH

Callington Town Hall was buzzing on Saturday 28th March with visitors to the Portreeve’s Community Day. The event was organised by Callington Town Council and was a huge success with forty groups and organisations from the area attending the day. The idea of the community event was for the groups and organisations to get together and either raise money for their charity or just to let the community know what they do and what is available for anyone to get involved in.

There is such a diverse array of clubs in the Callington area and it was excellent to see a large majority of them present on the day. You cannot say there is nothing to do in Callington! The stands varied enormously from youth groups; health information; musical and sporting groups and organisations for the more mature person. The Rotary Club of Callington had on display a Shelter Box and they also organised Blood Pressure Monitoring. The Heritage Centre had a model of part of the Callington railway displayed in the Council Chamber Foyer.

Callington Town Council had on display information about the Neighbourhood Plan and what has been achieved so far and how the Plan is progressing. If you are interested in being involved in the Neighbourhood Plan please contact the Town Clerk on 384039 or email at [email protected].
