OMMODORE S ETTER the air. At least that is what I am telling myself. And until C ’ L fall really does arrive, a little hot weather is no excuse for Norm Grail, Commodore “real Texans” to not come out and sail/race.

Fall is Almost Here! Fleet and Club Racing It’s official! September is here and you may now remove On Wednesday evenings, starting at 6:30 pm, the Laser the mothballs from your sweaters and winter coats! Get Fleet holds its races. All Fleets are invited to join in the them out ready! In spite of the foreseeable forecast calling fun. On many Friday evenings, the V15s hold their races for string of 100 degree days, I believe a whiff of fall is in and the Butterflys race every Saturday beginning at 10:30 am. All the above Fleets welcome members who are new to sailing or seasoned sailors wishing to try out a different boat and different Fleet. Contact any of the Fleet captains (find their email addresses at http://www.cscsailing.org/ fleets_overview.html) to make arrangements to use a loaner boat. Finally, the club races are held on Sundays with the first race starting promptly at 1:30 pm. The Flying Scots are the largest Fleet on the water on Sundays along with a large contingent of Corinthians, V15s, occasionally Snipes, and sometimes a Laser or two. Three boats of any Fleet will get their own start. The Sunday race committees are generally well-experienced and run good races so the club encourages all Fleets to take advantage of the opportunity to come out and race. If you are new to sailing, much of the time, there are opportunities to crew or “catch a ride” especially if the winds are up. “Eighty percent of success is showing up!”

Making a Difference in our Community I am especially proud of CSC’s continued focus on giving back to the community. This year, CSC and its members made meaningful monetary donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a result of the Commodore’s Cup Regatta in May.

He needs someone who can lead the class on weekends when he is out of town, and also needs volunteers to instruct. If you can help out, please contact Bruce at [email protected].

Sailing Camps The third of three two-week junior sailing camps finished up in August. Organized by Renee and Steve Comen with head- coach Kelly Gough, we have had full camps for all three sessions. This year almost all the instructors are U.S. Sailing Certified Level 1 certified. I have heard really good things about the camp this year from some of the parents and I applaud Renee, Steve, Kelly and all the instructors for their efforts in making the camps a success. Is it true Larry Ellison has scouts scoping out the action at CSC looking for the next big-time skipper?

Social Scene The annual July 4th party was a huge success. Thanks to Alanna Strong and all the volunteers who made this evening especially memorable. Beginning with the Opti races—way to go Audrey, Mac, Mark, and others; the dessert contest with too many scrumptious offerings to mention—every entry was a winner; the delicious buffet, good music, cool beverages, and finally topping it all off with really good fireworks going off in all directions. Oh yes, and let’s not forget the “memorable” rap song as adeptly performed by none other than Brig North who was the only Opti sailor to capsize. And did I mention he got beat by Audrey Duffell—again, way to go Audrey! I don’t remember having so many sailboats on the water as that evening. The weather was perfect and the sunset spectacular. I am told we had 250 or more members and guests attend the festivities and the place was still hopping at midnight!\

While August is a relatively quiet month around the club, the schedule begins to fill up in September and October. Our September social event will be on September 6th—yes, it’s really on the first Friday—and will be a chili and cornbread contest with music and more.

This year, instead of an August social event, we are adding an October event—CSC’s first Oktoberfest with brats, beer and, maybe a polka band. Our neighbors, White Rock Boat Club members, are invited to join us and next year we will be their guests at whatever they choose to host. I would like for this to Photo by Alanna Strong.

Go Christa, Skylar, and George!! By the way, Christa is sailing her Laser very, very well.

October on-the-water events include the State Fair Regatta, October 12th and 13th, open to all classes. We always have a big turnout for this fun event one-day. The Snipe Fleet will be holding their district championship in conjunction with State Fair Regatta and their event will continue on Sunday morning. The 36th Annual Flying Scot Open House, October 18th, 19th, and 20th, is always a huge, fun, and competitive.

Projects and Maintenance We have a couple of projects that may soon get underway. The replacement of the south entryway will begin very soon with an all new design by Bob Van Buren. A second project is taking shape that should alleviate the pent up demand for board boat space and, at the same time, fulfill a long overdue wish on another Fleet. Details will follow as soon as everything gets sorted out and nailed down. V-15s coming in after racing on 7/28. Photo by Cathy O’Neal.
