The oldest is a 1930 VL and the newest a 1949 45 CI. There are 74" and 80" VL's, UL's, and 45's, and 61" and 74" Seattle Cossacks Knuckleheads. All bikes are stock except for the Motorcycle Stunt & Drill Team handlebars, which are late- th 50's Flanders, these great 75 Anniversary old bikes are sturdy and stable enough to bear the weight of multiple riders. Prospective riders must be sponsored by a team member and are required to own and maintain their own motorcycles. Attendance at all practice is mandatory. New riders spend one year as rookies, riding in drills and progressing to stunts, at the close of that year they are either voted onto the team or asked to ride another rookie year. Riders possess no special physical characteristics, though some work out to keep in shape. The most important attribute riders need is the ability to control their "iron horses" during performances! Experience on the current team is extensive and impressive, and contributes much to the group’s cohesiveness. One member has devoted 40 years to the Cossacks; 2 others have over 30 years each and the remainder have 1 to 24 years experience. Current members are from 27 to 78 years old, and the roster has included brothers, as well as fathers and sons. We perform in about 20-30 shows each year, ranging from small town festivals to Worlds Fairs & National Motorcycle Rallies. We plan to entertain and promote a positive image of motorcycling & motorcycle safety for many years to come. Established 1938 Wherever the Seattle Cossacks ride, people watch and wonder in fascination, waiting for the next man to climb higher. No ropes, no props, no skyhooks, no gimmicks - they just climb. How can they do that on motorcycles? The crowd bursts into cheers and applause as the team glides past . Name Year & Model of Harley Cubic Inch Engine It began in the 1930's with a group of racers and hill climbers Sam Chedester Jr. 1949 WL 45" who developed stunts to entertain themselves between events; entertaining fans came later. The first Jim Wright 1941 EL 61" organizational meeting took place in January 1938 with a group of Seattle racers, riders, delivery personnel, Dave Eady 1941 FL 74" businessmen, and other interested folks. By April they had a formal organization and a set of by-laws that Todd Tressler 1934 VL 74" included "to entertain and promote the positive image of Delon Sandmire 1947 WL 45” motorcycling" (the emphasis on promoting rider safety came later) but what to call themselves? Russia's cavalry Bill Jamison 1941 EL 61" members, the Cossacks, were known the world over for their masterful horsemanship, and bikes were often called "Iron Horses" in those days. Andy Nicholson 1947 FL 74" Formal practices began and by the end of 1938 the group was well-known in the Seattle area. They Shawn Mein 1946 WL 45" disbanded temporarily during World War II, since many members were young men who went to serve their country, and reorganized in the spring of 1946.

  • Introduction Abc Sports and Network Sports Television
Introduction abc sports and network sports television in september 1994, Sports Illustrated published a list of the forty most infl uential sports fi gures in the forty years since the magazine’s launch. Its top two selections—Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan—were no great surprise. At the height of their respective careers, Ali and Jordan were argu- ably the most recognizable people on Earth. Sports Illustrated’s third-ranked selection—the American Broadcasting Company’s sports television master- mind Roone Arledge—was comparatively obscure. Arledge never fronted for global ad campaigns, had a shoe line, or divided a nation with his politics. But the magazine might have underestimated the infl uence of this producer and executive. During Arledge’s thirty-eight-year stint at the network, ABC built and codifi ed the media infrastructure that made possible global sport celebri- ties of Ali and Jordan’s unprecedented magnitude. ABC Sports is behind some of network sports television’s most signifi cant practices, personalities, and moments. It created the weekend anthology Wide World of Sports, transformed professional football into a prime-time spectacle with Monday Night Football, and fashioned the Olympics into a mega media event. It helped to turn Ali, the sportscaster Howard Cosell, and the daredevil Evel Knievel into stars and captured now-iconic instances that include Tommie Smith and John Carlos’s raised-fi st protest at the 1968 Olympics, the terrorist attacks at the 1972 Munich Games, Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs’s 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, the US hockey team’s 1980 “Miracle on Ice” victory over the Soviet Union, and the 1999 Women’s World Cup fi nal.
