Considering a move or visit to the Florida Keys? The best way to familiarize yourself with your new hometown is by surfing our new site www.keysweekly.com. UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 17, 2017 SEEN AROUND TOWN 23 HISTORY COMES TO LIFE Discovery Center a portal to the past n Nov. 10, the Florida Keys History & Discovery Cen- ter could have easily been confused for a portal to the past.O The museum’s exhibits had truly come to life, as every corner seemed to reveal a new character. Listen, when 1 Henry Flagler literally greets you at the door, you know it’s about to get real. 4 And, yes, I mean literally. No one can 2 3 convince me that Jerry Wilkinson isn’t actually Henry Flagler. Roger Young’s 5 pirate costume comes with rum, FYI. Historian Brad Bertelli as a plantation worker, and pin-up girls Bryanna Scha- fer and Heather Potter, crushed the vintage look. Artist Dan Lawler had the honor of capturing all the craziness in an original painting made on-site. The Florida Keys History & Discov- ery Center revealed itself as a venue in 6 its prime. During dinner service, plans to add a cannon and Cuban refugee 7 boat exhibit were also announced. Young professionals in the Upper Keys are encouraged to join the museum’s young philanthropic group, Flagler’s Folly Society. Contact Erin Muir, at [email protected] for details.

GABRIEL SANCHEZ/Keys Weekly

1. Audra Wallace, left, Kate DeLoach, and 8 Erin Muir dazzle in their dresses.

2. Roger Young, left, and Chef Bobby Stoky debate rum pairings.

3. Kara Lundgren, left, and State Rep. Holly Raschein enjoy the fun.

4. It’s very possible that Henry Flagler cloned himself, and now goes by the name Jerry Wilkinson.

5. The Florida Keys History and Discovery Center is filled with laughter.

6. Bryanna Schafer, left, Brad Bertelli, and Heather Potter bring the exhibits to life with incredible accuracy. To stay in char- acter, Bertelli carried a pineapple around for the ENTIRE evening. #mansbestfriend

7. Robert Stober, left, FKHDC Foundation President Richard Russell, and birthday girl Claudia Stober discuss race day dos and don’ts.

8. Alan Newman, left, Maria Perez, Scott Naz, Amber Naz, Lindsay Hill win best group smile. 24 UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 17, 2017
