And we do have good things to look forward to: Fuller’s have agreed to renew their generous sponsorship, so we can continue to be grateful for their largesse. Please do drink as much as you can on their behalf (not necessarily alcohol of course…). Iamveryexcitedaboutthejointregional3rdXIstructure.NotonlydoIbelievethatthiswill help to increase interest in 3rd XI cricket by reducing travelling, it also signals a new spirit of co-operation between the FBSCL and the Surrey Championship, which can only be in the best interest of all Surrey cricketers. And on that subject, I would like to welcome all the SC 3rd XIs that will be playing at our clubs’ grounds this year and hope you enjoy the experience. Those of you who attend any of the management meetings will know that we have a significant surplus of funds. Please be aware that we are prepared to use these funds for small grants, or, preferably (to make it go further) interest free loans to our member clubs to enable them to make improvements to their facilities for the benefit of all. And now the appeal. Although we have managed to fill some of the committee positions, we still have no Secretary and no Treasurer. As I am sure you appreciate, we cannot function as an organisation without these roles being filled. There are different ways of doing this – for example, we can split the Secretary’s jobs into multiple functions in order to share the workload, but we have to have the volunteers to enable us to do this. Iappreciatethisisanongoingchallengeforclubsaswell, butwhatappliestoaclubapplies just as much to a league – its future is totally dependent on people holding up their hands and giving up a few hours here and there to put something back into the game they have enjoyed to ensure that future generations can take the same pleasure we have all done. Rant over – have a great summer of cricket and enjoy the companionship that only cricket brings. Sussex CCC vs Kent 2 Day Friendly The 1st Central County Ground, Hove Thursday 28th – Friday 29th March 2019 Day One Sussex’s bowlers will take plenty of encouragement from the first day of their pre- season friendly against Kent after taking 13 top-order wickets at The 1st Central County Ground on Thursday. In his first outing since undergoing hip surgery during the off-season, Ollie Robinson bowled ten overs without difficulty, picking up three for 18. At one stage he had the remarkable figures of three for none from six overs as he wreaked havoc amongst Kent’s batsmen, who it was agreed would bat for the entirety of the day’s 90 overs. Robinson struck with the third ball of the day, a length delivery that nipped back and sent Sean Dickson’s off-stump cartwheeling. Robinson had the ball moving the other way for his second dismissal, a full-pitched outswinger that made its move too late for Daniel Bell-Drummond to do anything about it crashing into his wicket. A winter of recuperation in the groundsman’s shed, the Hove off-stump was being given very little time to adjust to another season of battery from Sussex’s leading wicket-taker of 2018. Chris Jordan struck next - Adam Rouse caught down the legside by Ben Brown for a duck - before Robinson was at it again. This time it was a shorter delivery that did the business as Zack Crawley sent the ball ballooning off the back of his bat to Michael Burgess in the gully to leave Kent in dire straits at 19 for 4.

  • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Closing at Noon 10
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

The Carbiner “For sport and for good fellowship” EDITION NUMBER 17 – 16 NOV 2017 In This Edition....... CCHK – CRICKET SIXES LUNCHEON THE CARBINE CLUB OF HONG KONG – CRICKET SIXES On October 27th 2017, The Carbine Club of Hong Kong members and guests were treated to the wit and mirth of former England test fast bowler Gladstone Small and former Australian test captain Kim Hughes on the eve of the return of the Hong Kong World Cricket Sixes. Mark Winstanley, Gladstone Small, Kim Hughes & John Ridley . CARBINER 17 - 2017 Gladstone Small hails from Barbados. His original interest in cricket was on account of his grandfather’s near obsession with the great England players of that day in the Fifties and early Sixties. Gladstone played for Surrey, also 17 Tests and 53 ODI’s for England. He is generally regarded as one of the most popular and self-effacing characters in cricketing circles. He particularly extolled the virtues of Sir Richard Hadlee as the greatest fast bowler he had had the privilege of seeing in action. Reminiscing on his early county playing days, Gladstone opened the bowling with recollections of being pranked and needing a passport for a tour match in Scotland. He regaled the Hyatt Regency crowd with memories of watching the ’82 MCG test, before playing in the ’86 tour with Mike Gatting. His recollection of the carnage of the Brisbane test preparation had the guests in stitches of laughter, before he concluded with the sheer joy of taking a 5-for alongside Sir Ian Botham at the MCG Boxing Day test.

  • Is Australian Cricket Racist?
Is Australian cricket racist? What they said… ‘There wasn’t a match I wasn’t racially abused in when I went out to bat’ John McGuire, an Indigenous player who is second in the all-time run-scoring list for the first-grade competition in Western Australia ‘We have to be vigilant against any comments, against any actions, even though it’s conducted by only a very small minority of people’ New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian warning cricket fans against making racially abusive comments The issue at a glance On January 9. 2021, on day three of the India vs Australia test match being played on the Sydney Cricket Ground, India captain Ajinkya Rahane and other senior players spoke to the umpires at the end of play. It was subsequently revealed that they were alleging racist abuse from some sections of the crowd. On January 10, play was stopped for eight minutes following claims of more alleged abuse. At least six fans were removed from their seats for allegedly making racist comments after Mohammed Siraj ran in from the fine-leg boundary, alerting teammates before umpires passed on the message to security and police. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jan/10/india-report-alleged-racist-abuse-from-scg- crowd-during-third-test A subsequent enquiry confirmed that racial abuse had occurred; however, the six spectators who had been escorted from the stadium were not the perpetrators. https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/12200065/cricket-australia-confirms-india- players-were-racially-abused-in-sydney-six-fans-cleared The incident has provoked significant discussion regarding the extent of racism in Australian cricket.

LCS Meeting Thursday 23rd February Alan Fordham ECB Operations Manager Our second guest speaker for February 100 brave souls fought storm DORIS, and made their way to Grace Road on Thursday night to listen to a very frank and open Alan Fordham, talking about his mental battles towards the end of his batting career. Howard formally introducing Alan to the audience. Alan looks impressed with his stats. It had been 10 years since Alan’s last visit to our society in 2007 In his introduction, Howard, said that Alan had had a 10 year career with Northamptonshire CCC, for most of that time as an opening bat. Alan moved into the administration of the game, and is now the ECB operations manager, working from Lords, so his office is in a nice setting for anyone interested in cricket. Alan oversees the organisation of the county cricket fixture list, which means in total something like 400 fixtures, looks after the four Pitch Liaison officers and was the guy who set out the rules for the running of the first ever 20/Twenty cup. Alan preparing his talk Alan started by saying that he was glad it had been 10 years since his last visit, as he could just give the same talk again, and no one would remember. The first line of his talk was, this was the largest crowd he had seen at Grace Road, and then said, I suppose that’s not the first time you’ve heard that said before. He went on to say there would be no more jokes.
