Episode 6, NC-4: First Across the Atlantic, Pensacola, Florida and Hammondsport, NY Elyse Luray: Our first story examines a swatch of fabric which may be from one of history’s most forgotten milestones: the world's first transatlantic flight. May 17th, 1919. The Portuguese Azores. Men in whaling ships watched the sea for their prey, harpoons at the ready. But on this morning, they make an unexpected and otherworldly sighting. A huge gray flying machine emerges from the fog, making a roar unlike anything they have ever heard before. Six American airmen ride 20,000 pounds of wood, metal, fabric and fuel, and plunge gently into the bay, ending the flight of the NC-4. It was journey many had thought impossible. For the first time, men had flown from America to Europe, crossing the vast Atlantic Ocean. But strangely, while their voyage was eight years before Charles Lindbergh's flight, few Americans have ever heard of the NC-4. Almost 90 years later, a woman from Saratoga, California, has an unusual family heirloom that she believes was a part of this milestone in aviation history. DATA Pnosr.BM In recent years, a number of intensive field and laboratory studies of the rocks of the White Mountain district in New Hamp- shire have been carried out. One result of these investigations is to show that there exists in this area a group of rocks with marked alkaline affinities (3)* to which the name White Mountain magma serieshas been applied (5, p.56). The various rock types of this group form a definite series,and wherever found in the area they possessthe same relative ages.Such a sequenceis of greatestim- portance to petrology and necessitatesan explanation. Accord- ingly, the writers have undertaken a study of this problem, the results of which are presented in this paper. ft is not pretended that this work is complete or that the problem has been entirely solved. Certain definite conclusions have been reached, however, and it is hoped that these may lead to a more complete under- standing of the evolution of the White Mountain magma series. The writers are especiallyindebted to ProfessorMarland Billings of Harvard University for his valuable assistancein preparing this paper. Several of the major ideas presentedhere were first sug- gested by Professor Billings, and these have led to a clearer under- standing of many of the intricate problems encountered in the course of the work. W g E o Fire W b in the e c White Mountains m g p A Historical Perspective a Christine L. Goodale he White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) owes its existence, Tin part, to its fiery history. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, debris from unprecedented logging fueled fires across the region. This disrup- tion inflamed public ire, and concern over the potential loss of these beloved forests—and, influentially, concern by downstream manufac- turers that deforestation would dry up their river power—eventually brought about the Weeks Act in 1911. The Weeks Act authorized the federal purchase of forestland and established the WMNF. The public outrage at logging-era fires contrasts with public appreciation of the scenic side effects of some fires long past: enhanced views of and from such peaks as Chocorua, Crawford, Moat, Welch, Hale, the Sugarloaves, and the Baldfaces. On these and other mountains, forest fires cleared the low summits of view- blocking trees, and subsequent erosion washed away much of the soil that might have supported regrowth. Elsewhere, picturesque stands of paper birch owe their origin to fires from a century ago. -
