Spring 2018 Newsletter March 2018 Spring 2018 newsletter Greetings, We hope all our DCA members had a pleasant winter, wherever you may have spent it. March finds us looking forward to the spring portion of our 2017/18 season, which will resume in just a few weeks. Make sure you have our April and May concert dates on your calendar! Joel Fan, piano, on Sunday, April 15, the Marcia Klebanow Memorial Concert Acclaimed by the New York Times for his “probing intellect and vivid imagination,” Joel Fan is an artist who illuminates the rare and unexpected. The program will include Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantaisie Op. 61 and Liszt’s Sonata in b minor, along with La Nuit du Destin by Dia Succari, Autumn Moon by Peixun Chen, Liuyang River by Jianzhong Wang, and Don’t Want to Wait, a piano suite by Evan Ziporyn and Christine Southworth that was commissioned for Joel Fan. A Far Cry with guest artist David Shifrin, clarinet, on Sunday, May 20, 2018 Our favorite imaginatively trailblazing Grammy-nominated orchestra returns, joined by special guest artist David Shifrin, a clarinet legend. The program will include Mozart’s Serenata Notturna, Benjamin Britten’s Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge (Op. 10) and, with Mr. Shifrin, Aaron Copland’s lyrical, jazz-influenced Clarinet Concerto. Both concerts will start at 3 p.m. and be followed by meet-the-artist receptions. The Veronica Hagman Concert Hall is located in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on Western Connecticut State University’s Westside campus. (For directions, see www.danburyconcert.org) Announcing our 2018/19 season The DCA Music Committee has done its magic once again to select a series that’s sure to delight our audience. Here’s what they have in store for the season that will start in September of 2018.* • October 21, 2018: Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner, piano, will return to our stage with his “exquisite musicality, masterful technique, and a veritable deluge of sonorities” • November 18, 2018: Frisson, a string and wind nonet (violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and French horn) with an exciting, beautiful repertoire • March 24, 2019: Walden Chamber Players, a string quartet and bassoon • May 19, 2019: The Daedalus Quartet, who wowed us at last fall’s Newtown Friends of Music finale, will make their DCA debut We’ll have more details on our website and in the brochure that will be sent by regular mail to current subscribers later this spring. ***** Join us at our annual meeting All subscribers are welcome to attend the Danbury Concert Association’s annual meeting and dinner which will take place on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Chuck’s Steak House, starting at 6:00 p.m. A business meeting and election of officers and the board will follow the meal. If you’d like to attend, please RSVP (by April 1) to 203.748.2177 (leave a message if necessary). The cost of the meal plus gratuity will be $35 per person, payable by cash or check to the Danbury Concert Association.) Fundraising update We were heartened by the response to the DCA fundraising effort announced in late 2017. A number of music lovers stepped up, and their generous donations will help us continue to bring beautiful music to the Danbury area, in the form of the upcoming Marcia Klebanow memorial concert and in the season ahead. The Anne Adlum Hull and William Remsen Strickland Fund in the Library of Congress was created in 1992 by William Remsen Strickland, noted American conductor, for the promotion and advancement of American music through lectures, publications, commissions, concerts of chamber music, radio broadcasts, and recordings, Mr. Strickland taught at the Juilliard School of Music and served as music director of the Oratorio Society of New York, which he conducted at the inaugural concert to raise funds for saving Carnegie Hall. A friend of Mr. Strickland and a piano teacher, Ms. Hull studied at the Peabody Conservatory and was best known for her duets with Mary Howe.     INVESTIGATION INTO NIGEL BUTTERLEY’S PENTAD Bryan Wayne Griffiths A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Music (Performance) Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. 2017 This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. Abstract Nigel Butterley’s Pentad (1968) was one of the many compositions to be commissioned by Australian institutions during the 1960s. Yet, in spite of its regular performance in the first twenty years following its premiere, its extant sources are not in a reasonable condition for faithful performances today. Following James Grier’s methodology upon the subject, along with direct consultation with the composer, this study primarily documents the critical examination in preparing a new edition of Pentad. New analytical perspectives of the work prompted by this investigation, are included in this discussion. Although Pentad’s orchestration for twenty-seven woodwind and brass instruments fits it within the category of a wind band work, its abstract aesthetic, instrumentation and commission more appropriately suggests it be regarded as work for orchestral winds. This study also reports the determination of this finding, along with an assessment of the background and context of the composition in Australian music at the time. Consequently, new findings on the Australian wind band movement from 1945–1970 are presented, and new light is shed on Pentad, a unique composition in Butterley’s oeuvre.

He had learned to play various instruments bedore attending London's Royal Academy of Music. He became world famous as a jazz composer, saxophonist and clarinetist, and writer of film scores.
