1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives The Flaming Lips: The Freak Show Continues Tod Hardin · Thursday, July 25th, 2013 Provocative, genius, horrific, thought-provoking, talentless, psychedelic, insulting, original, gross, sexy, acclaimed and complete shit … the list goes on. All words, at one time or another over the past 30 years, that have been used to describe the creative efforts of The Flaming Lips – Oklahoma City’s favorite sons and one of the bedrocks of alternative rock lore. Be it through their music, stage theatrics, videos, feature films or political statements, one way or another they always manage to spark conversation. Love’m or hate’m, one thing that’s certain is that they possess a level of creative bravery that few artists in any discipline dare to touch. The title of Bradley Beesley’s 2005 documentary on the band says it all: The Fearless Freaks. Fearless they are and thankfully immune to the criticism that can tend to follow them. Where most would find pause, they instead dare to be different and to follow a path made only by them. With their new album, The Terror, they have produced somewhat of a dark offering about despair, loneliness, anxiety and depression. As is often the case, art tends to imitate life, and this is one area where the Lips certainly are not immune to. With front man Wayne Coyne recently separating from his partner of 25 years, and with musical savant Steven Drozd rumored to have again relapsed earlier this year, the music here certainly takes on a deeper meaning.

Today the town is divided by fears of serious health risks, environmental politics, civic pride and old racial tensions between Indian and white society. Exploring the complex and often surprising connection between people and place, THE CREEK RUNS RED will have its television premiere on the Emmy® Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens, hosted by Terrence Howard on Tuesday, November 20 at 10:00 PM (check local listings). Located in the far northeast corner of Oklahoma, the town of Picher emerged from the rolling prairie of the Quapaw Indian tribal lands and became the hub of the richest lead and zinc-mining field on the planet. The town thrived and provided bullets for two world wars before beginning a slow decline. Since the area was declared a Superfund site in 1981, Picher’s residents have been forced to choose between preserving their image of the American dream and preserving their health. THE CREEK RUNS RED carries us into the heart of a sharply divided community to reveal, with extraordinary intimacy and insight, an array of human reactions to an environmental disaster.

  • PROCESS-ORIENTED AESTHETICS in 1990S ALTERNATIVE ROCK and HIP-HOP
SIGNIFYING DIY: PROCESS-ORIENTED AESTHETICS IN 1990s ALTERNATIVE ROCK AND HIP-HOP Brian Jones A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Mark Katz David García Jocelyn Neal Philip Vandermeer Albin Zak © 2014 Brian Jones ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BRIAN JONES: Signifying DIY: Process-Oriented Aesthetics in 1990s Alternative Rock and Hip-Hop (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation posits and demonstrates a framework for analyzing how sound recordings convey meaning in rock—considering how listeners experience recordings, not only as fixed products, but also as sonic evidence of implied actions. I call this framework process-oriented aesthetics, and I define it as a sensibility in which musical meaning is conveyed in a record’s sonic foregrounding of its own production process. In this sensibility, recordings sonically evoke what I call a production myth—a real or imagined backstory, nurtured through the surrounding discourse, that adds meaning to the musical sounds. Production myths encourage listeners to aestheticize practices of musical creation and help facilitate intellectual and creative engagement in listening. The effects of process-oriented aesthetics rely upon the interplay between the nuances of recorded sound and the assumed (or imagined) circumstances of their production. I investigate these aesthetic sensibilities in the music and discourse of 1990s alternative rock and hip-hop. Alternative rock in the 1990s harbored an enduring tension between the small- scale, non-commercial values of its indie roots and the music’s eventual mass-mediated popularity.
