SECTION 9 SUNFLOWER (HELIANTHUS ANNUUS L.) 1. Taxonomy of the Genus Helianthus, Natural Habitat and Origins of the Cultivated Sunflower A. Taxonomy of the genus Helianthus The sunflower belongs to the genus Helianthus in the Composite family (Asterales order), which includes species with very diverse morphologies (herbs, shrubs, lianas, etc.). The genus Helianthus belongs to the Heliantheae tribe. This includes approximately 50 species originating in North and Central America. The basis for the botanical classification of the genus Helianthus was proposed by Heiser et al. (1969) and refined subsequently using new phenological, cladistic and biosystematic methods, (Robinson, 1979; Anashchenko, 1974, 1979; Schilling and Heiser, 1981) or molecular markers (Sossey-Alaoui et al., 1998). This approach splits Helianthus into four sections: Helianthus, Agrestes, Ciliares and Atrorubens. This classification is set out in Table 1.18. Section Helianthus This section comprises 12 species, including H. annuus, the cultivated sunflower. These species, which are diploid (2n = 34), are interfertile and annual in almost all cases. For the majority, the natural distribution is central and western North America. They are generally well adapted to dry or even arid areas and sandy soils. The widespread H. annuus L. species includes (Heiser et al., 1969) plants cultivated for seed or fodder referred to as H. annuus var. macrocarpus (D.C), or cultivated for ornament (H. annuus subsp. annuus), and uncultivated wild and weedy plants (H. annuus subsp. lenticularis, H. annuus subsp. Texanus, etc.). Leaves of these species are usually alternate, ovoid and with a long petiole. Flower heads, or capitula, consist of tubular and ligulate florets, which may be deep purple, red or yellow. -

Meeting called to order by the Chair at 8:13 am followed by introduction of the Chair and Secretary. Attendees welcomed to the meeting, Secretary counted 25 attendees at the start of the meeting, all attendees present introduced themselves before the coffee break (9:50 am). 2. Chair outlined the agenda for the meeting and noted two additions: a. Lindsey Goudis, BASF to give insecticide update (Section 8.3) b. Ana Dal Molin to give update on development of app for insect, weed, and disease identification (Section 9.4, Special Reports) -No other additions to the agenda Scott Hartley motioned for the agenda to be accepted as revised. Motion seconded by Keith Gabert. Motion passed. 3. Minutes from 2016 meeting in Saskatoon SK briefly summarized. No comments/concerns were raised concerning the minutes. Tyler Wist motioned to accept the 2016 minutes. Motion seconded by Jennifer Otani. Motion passed. 4. No new business arose from the 2016 meeting. 5. Resolutions: One outstanding resolution from 2016 was noted: The need to write to the provinces regarding attendance of provincial scientists at WFPM. This resolution has been passed to the Resolutions Committee of WFPM. Scott Hartley and Glenda Clezy volunteered to serve on the 2017 Resolutions Committee. -

Because sunflowers are Cnative, associated insects have coevolved with the plants for centuries. When sunflowers were altered from a wild to a cultivated state, the changes had an impact on the insects associated with sunflowers in their native home. Plant architecture, growth phenology and plant community were altered when sunflowers were changed from wild to cultivated. For plant architecture, sunflowers changed from multiple to a single head, from branched to a single stem and from small to large seeds. The growth phenology also changed from variable emergence and extended periods of flowering in the wild type sunflower to discrete emergence and a short flowering period in cultivated sunflower. The plant community changed from small patches of mixed species of wild sunflowers to large acreage of a monoculture of cultivated sunflowers. A number of insects made the transition from the wild plant type to the cultivated plant to feed and develop. Some of these species affect the producers’ ability to increase seed production and thus have become economic pests. In the major sunflower-producing areas of the Dakotas, Minnesota and Manitoba, approximately 15 species of insects can cause plant injury and economic loss to sunflowers, depending on the severity of infestation. -

Crop Management doi:10.1094/CM-2005-0812-01- RS. Abstract The sunflower stem weevil infests stalks of cultivated sunflower and can cause lodging resulting in loss of the head prior to harvest. Our objective was to determine whether altered planting periods could reduce weevil densities in confection and oilseed sunflower in the central High Plains production region. We evaluated impact of planting date by measuring larval density within sunflower stalks, larval parasitoid species present, and parasitization rates. Trials were conducted at Colby, KS from 1999 to 2001, with plots seeded in four planting periods. Results, although inconsistent over years and between the two sunflower types, showed that later planting dates reduced weevil density in stalks. Weevil numbers in stalks from the first seeding period until the last had decreased by 10% to 50%. The third planting date in each year coincided with cumulative degree-days (581) for the predicted emergence of 90% of adult sunflower stem weevils. -

Abbreviations used: The following abbreviations will be used in this document to indicate the following agricultural regions in Manitoba; NW=Northwest, SW=Southwest, C=Central, E=Eastern, I=Interlake. Estimated acres: Estimated acres grown in Manitoba in 2012 (shown in brackets under each commodity title) are from the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) 2012 Variety Market Share Report. The symbol ↑ indicates an increase in acres from 2011, whereas ↓ indicates a decrease in acres from 2011. Area seeded increased for many crops in 2012, because close to 3 million acres went unseeded in 2011. Summary: In cereal crops, armyworms (Mythimna unipuncta) were a concern in some areas, and aster leafhopper (Macrosteles quadrilineatus) was at very high levels in many fields in late-spring and early-summer. Lygus bugs were at economical levels in some fields of canola and dry beans. Lygus bugs were also controlled in some sunflower fields. There were localized problems with bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata in canola. Diseased bertha armyworms were noted in some locations. High levels of flea beetles, Phyllotreta spp., in canola were a concern in some fields, even though most canola seed had seed treatments containing an insecticide. Levels of zebra caterpillar, Melanchra picta, were abundant in some canola and alfalfa fields. Twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, populations were a concern in some soybean fields late in the summer. Alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica) was a concern in many alfalfa fields. -
