ACPO The Province of Canada 2003 ACPO Conference was held at the Lavrock Camp and Conference Centre, Salmonier Line, in the diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador. The Chair, The Rt. Rev’d Donald Harvey, was very active in the planning and preparations for the weekend. He offered a presentation to the assessors on Friday morning, as well as presided and preached at the Friday afternoon Eucharist. We are grateful for his input into the preparation and opening day of the weekend. Assessors There were fifteen assessors from across the province representing the seven dioceses and were all recommended by their diocesan bishop. It was evident as time unfolded that the assessors had prepared themselves for this conference by reading the information circulated beforehand. I am grateful for their dedication to the ACPO process. The energy and skill of this team are to be commended. Team Training We were fortunate to have an evening of training on Thursday with the assessors led by the Rev’d Dr. Alex Faseruk, M.U.N.L. School of Business. Dr. Faseruk, himself a deacon, chairs the Diaconal Discernment Committee in the diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador. He reflected on the ACPO process, the concept of discernment in terms of call, character and charisms, tips for interviewing and report writing. This presentation was certainly an excellent start for the conference. A ‘taste of Newfoundland’ followed the Team Training session. This time of fellowship helped cement a strong sense of community in a relaxed setting. Chaplain Our chaplain, the Rev’d Linda Budden, a parish priest in our diocese, coordinated the worship with the candidates and provided pastoral care to all in need throughout the weekend.

An Anglican-Lutheran Cycle of Prayer for Canada Advent 1, 2015 to the Reign of Christ, 2016 Introduction The Joint Anglican-Lutheran Commission has designed this cycle for use in Canadian Anglican and Lutheran congregations and communities in Sunday liturgies throughout the year. For each Sunday there are intentions for specific dioceses/synods/groups in both the Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. One of the characteristics of the Christian community throughout the ages has been our commitment to pray for the whole world but especially for our Christian sisters and brothers in churches closely linked to our own. Anglicans and Lutherans in Canada are accustomed to praying for the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran World Federation, so it is appropriate for us to pray for our immediate Anglican and Lutheran neighbours. Prayer cycles can be overwhelming and ‘crowded’ pieces of liturgies. Care needs to be exercised in setting a context: we are intentionally, as churches in full communion, holding each other in prayer. Some words of explanation may be needed to set this cycle of prayer in context. The Provincial Synod of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada
The Provincial Synod of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada Presidential Address given by The Most Reverend Andrew S. Hutchison Quebec City, September 18, 2003 On this day in 1893 members of the first General Synod gathered in St. James Cathedral, Toronto for a service of Thanksgiving. No longer were we three Provinces, each owing our allegiance to the Church of England. We were, and have been since that date, an independent national church. It is therefore a happy coincidence that with us is the Primate, The Most Rev'd Michael Peers and the General Secretary of General Synod, The Venerable Jim Boyles In the words of the Gospel, For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours. (John 4: 37-8) It is a time to look back to what was sown in other generations to bring us the harvest we now reap. Much of it is good and inspires us to thanksgiving. Some of it, in the clear light of hindsight is not. We reap the harvest of the good with the bad. And with such nourishment as the harvest provides, we labour to prepare the ground and do planting of our own for generations after us to harvest. Since we last met in Halifax in September 2000 we have said farewell to the Bishop of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, our 19th Metropolitan, Arthur Peters. The Bishop of Central Newfoundland, Eddie Marsh retired, and very soon the Bishop of Fredericton, William Hockin will join them in retirement, as will the Bishop of Western Newfoundland, Leonard Whitten, and in February, our Primate Michael Peers.
