This handbook has been developed to provide you with information that is commonly needed by parents of children in elementary school. This handbook will not contain answers to all questions, but you are encouraged to call the school at 305-235-1412 with any questions that are not answered here. Please read this handbook carefully and keep it for future reference. Additional communications will be sent from the school throughout the school year. We cordially invite you to visit our school, website at Http://howarddrive.dadeschools.net, meet with your child's teachers, participate in the parent activities, and become an integral part of the Howard Drive Elementary family. Dalby, Principal 7 MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK Howard Drive Elementary School Howard Drive Elementary is a pre-kindergarten through grade five school built in 1961 and located at 7750 SW 136 Street in Miami, Florida. Howard Drive Elementary School is in the Miami Palmetto Senior High School feeder pattern. Howard Drive Elementary has a family atmosphere with an active Parent Teacher Association. It has an array of programs available for students that meet criteria which include Cambridge International Primary Program, full time Gifted, Special Education, Extended Foreign Language (EFL) K-2ND grade, English Language Learn (ELL), Before and afterschool care is available, please contact the aftercare office for additional information. Selected students and grade level may participate in Art Club, Music Club, Running Club, Science Club, Category 5 Dance spirit Squad, and Jump Rope Club. Additional extracurricular activities include, Student Council, Future Educators of America, 5000 Role Model, Math and Science. Howard Drive has an active PTA and many community partners that assist the school in a variety of ways by rewarding students for outstanding achievements, donating time and service as well as providing snacks, programs, and awards for the school. Martin Elementary Howard Drive Elementary Palmetto Elementary Perrine Elementary Pinecrest Elementary Robert Russa Moton Elementary Vineland K-8 Center Middle Schools Palmetto Middle School Southwood Middle School Senior High School Miami Palmetto Senior High School 10 MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK School Information • Early Sign Out The early release of students causes disruption to the academic performance of all students and may create safety and security concerns. No students shall be released within the final thirty (30) minutes of the school day unless authorized by the Principal or Principal’s designee (i.e., emergency, sickness). • Late Arrival Students who are tardy to school must report to the Attendance Office to secure an admit. Excessive tardies may result in loss of privileges, detention, parent conference, and/or suspension. Opening and Closing School Hours: Pre-Kindergarten - 8:20 A.M. - 11:20 A.M./ 8:20 – 1:50 P.M. Kindergarten, First - 8:20 A.M. - 1:50 P.M. Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth - 8:35 A.M. - 3:05 P.M. All students are dismissed at 1:50 P.M. on Wednesdays Students dismissed at 1:50 P.M. and who are not in the After School Care Program must leave school promptly. There is to be no waiting for other students who are dismissed at 3:05 P.M. Children are to return home promptly after dismissal unless they remain for special help or for disciplinary purposes. You will be notified in the event that your child is to remain after school. Parents are reminded that the School Board and the school staff shall not be held liable for injuries of students at the time when the school is not in operation. Children should leave school, be picked up promptly at dismissal, or should be enrolled in the after-school care program. Teachers for PreK-1st begin their work day at 8:05 A.M. and open the classrooms at 8:10 A.M. Teachers for 2nd -5th begin their work day at 8:20 A.M. and open the classrooms at 8:25 A.M Parents are advised not to drop students off at school prior to the time when this supervision is available unless the child is enrolled in the before-school care program. We are concerned for the safety of the children and seek your support in making sure that your child is not at school at an unsupervised time. Students in grades PreK, K and 1st must upon arrival report directly to their classrooms. Students in grades 2-5 must report to the PE Court and wait for their teachers to pick them up at 8:25 A.M. Attendance Policy – Board Policy 5200 Student attendance is a means of improving student performance and critical in raising student achievement. Together, the staff of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, students, parents and the community must make every effort to lessen the loss of instructional time to students. Excused School and Class Absences and Tardies 1. Student illness: Students missing 5 or more consecutive days of school due to illness or injury are required to provide a written statement from a health care provider. The written statement must include all days the student has been absent from school. If a student is continually sick and repeatedly absent from school due to a specific medical condition, he or she must be

As referenced in DPS memo 2009-231, dated November 25, 2009, Florida data indicates a correlation between student participation in school arts programs (including music programs) and student achievement (see the study information at www.flmusiced.org or follow the links in the memorandum). The consistent pattern shown the recent Florida study of the 2007-2008 12th Grade Class indicated: For all students: the more music and arts classes taken, the higher the student achievement in such measures as graduation rate, GPA, FCAT, and the SAT For students on free and reduced lunch: the more music and arts classes taken, the higher the student achievement in all measures For students of all ethnicities: the more music and arts classes taken, the higher the student achievement in all measures The more arts classes taken, the less likely a student is to dropout of high school. The data contained in this report will allow you to compare student participation numbers in your music program to similar schools statewide. Please see the definitions and explanation of codes attached. For your ease of use, this report is also posted at www.flmusiced.org. The Florida School Music Association (FSMA) coordinates and oversees all interscholastic music activities in the State of Florida.
