Administrative history / Biographical sketch Note Thomas Michael Apsey graduated from the University of British Columbia’s Forestry department in 1961. After graduating, Apsey worked for the Department of Industrial Development, Trade and Commerce. Between the years 1963-1978 Apsey occupied positions at MacMillan Bloedel Limited, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Council of Forest Industries of British Columbia, and F.L.C Reed and Associates. In 1978, Apsey became the Deputy Minister of Forests for British Columbia a position he held until 1984. While Deputy Minister, Apsey also served as the Vice- Chairman of the British Columbia Deputy Ministers’ committee on Economic Development. In 1984, Apsey left his post as Deputy Minister and took on the role of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Forest Industries of British Columbia, a position he held until his retirement in 1998. In retirement, Apsey remains an active member of the forest industry community, attending numerous speaking engagements and sitting on committees for the Forest History Association of B.C. and the B.C. Forest Service Centeneray Society. Apsey has been awarded several honours including: the Rielle Thomson Award, the Chevalier de l’Ordre du Merite Agricole from the Government of France, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Government of Canada. In 2002 Apsey was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada University of British Columbia Library Rare Books and Special Collections Page 3 RBSC-ARC-1374 Mike Apsey fonds. Scope and content Fonds reflects Mike Apsey’s career and his involvement with organizations relating to forestry. The records include briefing notes, comments, speeches, remarks, presentations, made at conferences and different forestry gatherings, meeting minutes, transparencies and slides used for presentations, photographs of Apsey with dignitaries from Canada and the United States, reports, articles, and publications by Apsey about forestry. This fonds is divided into ten series: Briefs; Books and coursework; Conferences, committees, meetings, seminars, and conventions; Correspondence and memorandum; Hearing and legislation; Minutes; Reports, publications and articles; Photographs; Softwood Lumber Dispute; and Speeches, statements, remarks, and comments. Physical condition Some documents are beginning to discolour and display signs of rust, newspapers are starting to yellow and writing on fax sheets is beginning to fade. Immediate source of acquisition Donated to Rare Books and Special Collections by T.M. Apsey in 1996, 1997, 2006 and 2010. Arrangement The original order of the fonds has been preserved where possible. A note has been added when materials have been moved from their original location.
