We have continued to review our operations and programs to ensure that we are operating as effectively and efficiently as possible. While we have worked on a number of growth projects, this year was largely one of consolidation following a period of significant growth. The focus on operations has helped us in further consolidating our financial position, in that our operations deficit has been reduced once again. An overall surplus for the year of $524k was a pleasing outcome. The changes that have been made will benefit Northcott well into the future and enhance our ability to deal with the many changes we face in the disability sector over the coming years. On the services front we have made significant progress with the two homes (in Wagga Wagga and Mt Hutton, Newcastle) that we are building for 11 younger people with a disability currently living in aged care centres. We have also continued to develop our regional network and have strengthened systems and management in order to ensure the continued development and growth of our regional offices. The progress that has been made toward a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been exciting and encouraging. Northcott has been a very active participant in this process and I encourage you to get involved in supporting the proposed NDIS. The Board and Management are very conscious that the scheme, coupled with the move towards a more person centred approach to meeting the needs of people with a disability, will mean that Northcott faces some quite significant change ahead. With this in mind we have made progress on a number of initiatives that are moving us toward where we need to be. I am encouraged by the commitment, enthusiasm and understanding of our staff of the need for this approach, even though the journey will be challenging. Northcott has always been at the forefront of change in the sector and the ability to embrace change is a strength of our culture. A key focus for the coming year is to increase our capacity for innovation, which combined with our culture of embracing change, will provide a powerful driving force for Northcott in the future. I would like to thank our supporters, donors and other stakeholders for their ongoing support during the year. This support is very much appreciated and essential to enable us to continue to evolve and enhance our services. I would also like to thank the Board for their support, guidance and commitment during the year. Also, thank you to Kerry and her team for their wonderful efforts and achievements during the past year. TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 28 September 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 22 September to Monday 28 September 2009 Auckland, Canterbury in final: Canterbury will host Auckland in the national rugby league final after both won contrasting semifinals over the weekend. Bartercard Cup top qualifiers Canterbury pipped Wellington 20-17 in Christchurch today after trailing 10-6 at halftime, scoring four tries to three in an even contest. Bulls scrape through to berth in Final: The Bulls' big boys Jaye Pukepuke and Chris Bamford scored to deliver Canterbury's first representative rugby league home final in 16 years. But as Bulls' coach Brent Stuart quipped after the 20-17 win: "I won't need a nail manicure for a while" after yesterday's semifinal at Rugby League Park. Stuart watched nervously as the Bulls took 65 minutes to wrest the lead from Wellington and secure a National Provincial Premiership home final against Auckland next Sunday Christchurch's first since Stuart was a frontrower in Frank Endacott's side which routed Auckland in 1993. Sin-binning proves costly: Wellington league coach Trevor Clark is fuming after a crucial refereeing decision bundled his side out of the national provincial premiership. Canterbury beat Wellington 20-17 in yesterday's semifinal in Christchurch and the sin-binning of fullback Greig Dean was the major talking point. Wellington lost 32-0 to Canterbury during the regular season but shot out to a 10-0 first-half lead yesterday as Dean and winger Bureta Faraimo crossed for tries. Iro’s assistance invaluable: After his success with the Warriors' Under-20s and helping the Kiwis, Tony Iro's appointment as assistant coach of the first-grade side working alongside Ivan Cleary was a natural progression.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 14 April 2009 RE: Media Summary Wednesday 15 April to Monday 20 April 2009 Kiwis spoilt for choice: Former Kiwis coach Frank Endacott would like to see Christchurch-born South Sydney forward Eddy Pettybourne in a black jersey for next month's Anzac test. The 21-year-old backrower moved to Sydney with his family when he was three and has represented both nations in junior international football. Pettybourne played for the Australian Schoolboys team, but then represented the Junior Kiwis. He is also eligible to represent Samoa. Mayor leading board candidate: Gisborne’s Mayor leads the field of contenders to shape the future of league. Meng Foon, who has also led the Gisborne league since it ran into trouble two years ago, is understood to be among nominees for the revamped New Zealand Rugby League board of directors. Origin 'showpiece' faces sea of empty seats: THIS year's State of Origin series might be rugby league's version of good from far and far from good. The code's showpiece is in danger of featuring empty seats in its important Melbourne gamble as well as the second game in Sydney - and it might be a result of both teams staying away. Despite neither game being sold out yet, both NSW and Queensland have chosen to spend much of their camps well away from Melbourne, in the case of Origin I, and Sydney for the second game. Visa laws stopping PNG players NRL dream: Australian immigration laws are denying Papua New Guinea rugby league players their dream to play in the NRL while others turn to the UK as it's easier to gain entry.
