A hidden island in the heart of Athens! Anafiotika The great city of Athens, Greece is made up of numerous small villages that have melded together over the years. Plaka is the most ancient, original part of the city where most of the archaeological sites are located. Just up on the hill above Plaka, under the flank of the Acropolis (“the high city”) there is the tiny village of Anafiotika, so unique and so beautiful and totally different from the city. You have this amazing sense of being in a different place, on an island and you can enjoy the scenery, the beauty of it and the silence away from all he noises of the city. Plaka One of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Athens, with its narrow streets, lovely colourful neoclassical buildings, small cafes, traditional tavernas, souvenir shops and ancient ruins in almost every corner. Plaka is in the heart of the center of Athens, just under the Acropolis hill, yet has a totally different air than the rest of the city center, creating a feeling of nostalgia of the old Athens. Even though it is very commercial and popular with tourists, it is the ideal place to enjoy a nice walk, as there are plenty of things to do and see, while strolling around its small pedestrian streets. Tips *bar: Brettos *cafe: Yiasemi Bistro *taverna: Byzantino Monastiraki square In the heart of the Athens center, Monastiraki Square is a unique blend of styles, eras and cultures. You can find there nice cafes and tavernas. Stroll around the area and you discover all you need according to your taste and the things you like. In monastiraki you will find the flea market and one of the oldest metro lines that connects Athens with Piraeus. From there you can walk from Athinas street straight ahead and you will find yourself at Omonoia square or take the metro line and its just the next stop. You can also walk from there and in just 5 minutes you will find the famous Psyri area. There you will see beautiful grafitis everywhere you walk. Nice taverns and restaurants and cafes. Tips: *A-for Athens bar - Amazing view * Ermou street- shopping * Feyrouz- amazing vegan and not, street cheap but nice food * To koulouri tou Psyri * Ta serbetia tou Psyri & Nancy’s sweethouse- amazing traditional sweets Thissio Thission is a neighborhood with interesting contrasts: a wide pedestrian street, Apostolou Pavlou, leading from the metro station to the Acropolis, flanked by the temple of Hephaestus on one hand and a series of cafes on the other. You can see beautiful views walking all the way up the pedestrian street and around the area also. Walking there every weekend one can find artists sellings anything you can imagine, from second hand and vintage pieces to jewelry and handcrafted pieces. Taking that road will lead you to Acropolis but while walking you will discover other ancient monuments. The Philopappos Hill which is one of the best hills to see the view of Athens and the amazing monument on the top of the hill. Also there before you follow the path up on the hill, is the prison of Socratis. Walking a bit further you will find on your left you will find the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Tips: The underdog - amazing coffee quality - Thissio Syntagma square The name Syntagma means Constitution. Named after the Constitution, in the days of the King Otto, can be found opposite the Hellenic Parliament, once an Old Palace. Is the central square of Athens. A square full of historical events. Near Syntagma square in walking distance you will find the National garden of Athens and lots of museums to visit. Tips: All the museums are open on National bank holidays and every first Sunday of every month they are free. The National Library Of Athens Acropolis - Parthenonas Parthenon is a temple built for the goddess Athina, in her honor for being the protector of the city. Temple of Olympian Zeus Ancient Agora of Athens Tips: VISIT!!!! Lycabettus hill Amazing place to enjoy the view of the city! It’s just stunning! Definitely one of the things you don’t want to miss. Exarcheia One of the most famous neighborhoods of Athens vibrant and alive. Of course there are days that you should avoid that area because of fake anarchy and it’s quite dangerous. Besides that the area is full of graffities, where you can walk around and discover. Full of young people day and night and lots of places to enjoy nice music and food and drinks. If you are looking for an alternative area where you can find cool rock clubs, cheap tavernas, excellent used CD and record shops and a couple of the best rembetika clubs in Athens, then Exarchia is worth a visit.
